Coach Steven Franklin’s Raiders played to the bottom of the ninth to pull out a 5-4 victory over the visiting Oldenburg Academy Twisters Varsity Baseball Team at the South Ripley High School Forest G. Waters Baseball Field on Saturday, May 9. With pickings looking slim through five innings of action behind sophomore Raider hurler Cory Walker, trailing 0-4, Raider freshman Austin Halcomb was called to the mound and managed to hold them scoreless through the remaining four innings played, as South Ripley erupted to knot the game at four in the bottom of the sixth. From then on the challenge was truly on, as each team threatened over the next three innings of action, neither able to gain an edge. That was the case until SR’s junior second baseman Kaleb Riley sent a shot deep in left field to drive the winning run across the plate. With their ship obviously sinking, trailing 0-4, a super effort defensively was turned in by freshman hurler Austin Halcomb to earn the mound victory with a never say die Raider fielding effort behind him, denying the often threatening Twisters another score.
