On Saturday, six teams competed in the first Punkin Chunkin, a kick-off event to the Versailles Pumpkin Show, sponsored by the Lions Club. This was the first time groups could try chucking a pumpkin by a handmade catapult machine.

First place for accuracy went to Team Alpha from Boy Scout Troop 631. The winner for distance was B&B Enterprises sending the pumpkin 386 feet! Look for more photos in The Versailles Republican on Thursday.

Singers invited to join Golden Gate Choir
20 years of singing praise at Christmas

“To sing is to pray twice…”
In 1996, a group that wanted to bring music to Osgood was formed. The Golden Gate Community Choir’s first performance was at Easter that year at the Osgood Baptist Church. Since then, the choir has performed at various churches throughout the county.

“This year will be our 20th anniversary of singing God’s praises in our community,” said Ellie Irvin, a choir member. The choir is already preparing for the Christmas season, with the first practice scheduled for October 4. It will be at 2 p.m. at the Osgood United Methodist Church on South Walnut Street. They will then meet weekly on Sundays for practice until the December 6 performance. They are looking to build the choir, and invite former members and new ones to attend the practice. The Golden Gate choir will perform on December 6 at the Damm Theater in Osgood at 7 p.m..

The choir was initially under the guidance of Connie DeBurger. In 1997, Roger Stratton led the choir and did so until 1999 when Mike Whitaker came in. He led the choir until he retired in 2013. Karen Reynolds was chosen to fill in, and in 2014, Sharon Miller agreed to be director and continues in that role. Performances moved to the Damm Theater. “The theater is perfect for groups like Golden Gate. You can also offer refreshments, plenty of parking and it’s well lit for the evening show,” said Irvin. Membership continues to be open to all denominations

Those interested will be provided a CD to practice at home between group practices. There are no auditions. “If you like to sing, please come to our practice on October 4. Any questions will be answered at that time. We appreciate any new members, men and women!” Irvin noted. Sharon Miller said they need all voices, but particularly men.

At one point they had over 40 members, and would like to see it build back up to that. Children too are welcome, and Miller adds her 9-year-old granddaughter is participating. This year’s Christmas cantata is “Hope Has Hands,” which contains the popular “Joy to theWorld”, “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “Beautiful Star of Bethlehem” and “Mary, Did You Know?” among several other numbers. In addition to the choir, they would like to have an instrumental group perform a short program during intermission. If interested contact Miller at 812-852-4936.
