South Ripley Raiders rock the Dog Pound to claim 92nd annual Ripley County Boys Basketball Championship Title

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

The 21-year wait of winning the RCT has come to an end for South Ripley, who brought home the 2016 Championship trophy after their win against Batesville, 74-54 and whom they hadn’t beaten in the tourney for 22 years. South Ripley Raiders Varsity Basketball Team has high expectations for a productive 2016 season being they only lost one player, 2015 graduate Chase Samples, from last year’s team.

In pre-RCT action, the Raiders have proven to be on the right path to solid season performances, game in and game out, including an opening Raiders victory over rival Jac-Cen-Del Eagles varsity, without the assistance of senior Brady Meyer and junior Tyler Cole during the annually held Turkey Shootout.
The next big test was completed in a positive fashion, as well this past week with Coach Wrightsman’s Raiders dominating the 2016, 92nd Annual Ripley County Boys Basketball Tournament to a championship title. They won the first game of the tourney over the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles — this time with Meyer and Cole — by a 17 point margin final score of 63-46, followed by a 20 point championship title game at 74-54 over the hosting Batesville Bulldogs. Coach Wrightsman stated after the championship game, “I thought the kids came out playing really hard and did a great job of sharing the basketball. We have a very balanced team, and it is hard for other teams to focus on just one player. I am very proud of our players and coaching staff.”

With only one returning senior on their roster, the hosting Batesville Bulldogs hung on to claim a 9 point, 38-29 victory in their 2016, 92nd RCT Boys Varsity Basketball debut despite entering the contest with an 0-8 season record to date.

Boys Varsity Consolation

At Batesville High School on Saturday evening, Jan. 9, the consolation and championship games again afforded no unforeseen results with the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles winning the opener and South Ripley Raiders claiming the hardware and nets at conclusion of the 2016 RCT Boys Varsity Championship.
