Teams invited to chunk pumpkins

How far can you toss a 2 pound pumpkin? Perhaps several feet. How far could you if you made a machine that leveraged the weight and catapulted it in the air? How ‘about 386 feet? That’s what last year’s winner did and took home the prize money at the first Versailles Punkin Chunkin event.

The new event was a big success, and the organizers are wanting even more teams to sign up and put their engineering and creativity skills together.
It’s all held at the Versailles Sports Complex on Sept. 17 at 1 p.m., with practice starting at noon. “It was fantastic! We had lot of people there to watch,” Ryan Holcomb, chairman, said. There’s also $350 at stake, the prize money for accuracy and distance winners. He said they had seven teams last year, and would like that many or more this year. Last year’s reigning champ, B&B Enterprises (Michael Bailey and family) has signed up, as have a few other teams.

There is no fee to enter, but you do need to follow the rules, which are posted on the Versailles Pumpkin Show website. The counterweight can’t exceed 6 feet and the trebuchet may not use more than 450 pounds. The event helps kick off the Versailles Pumpkin Show, which starts four days later.

Scout troops and the Southeastern Career Center’s building trades participated last year. “We heard rumors that the building instructors might do their own and compete against their students,” Holcomb said. That could add a bit of rivalry to it! The SCC students did place in last year’s distance event.
