Good weather on tap for 2nd Bricktoberfest

Live music, arts, crafts, kids games, food and drinks all sound like the makings of a perfect community festival. Place it on a charming brick paved street in the middle of a small town on a sunny fall day, and you have the making of Osgood’s 2nd annual Bricktoberfest to be held Oct. 1. The local organizers were not disheartened by the chilly and wet weather last year and believe Mother Nature is smiling upon the town for this year’s 2nd event. Despite the bad weather, over 300 people came out to get a smoked pork sandwich and hear some local live music.

Hannah Kappes, one of the committee members who lives in Aurora but loves her hometown enough to stay active, said they hope to double the numbers from last year. It’s not a moneymaker but more a community-maker, a place to gather and enjoy one another in a fun atmosphere during one of the most lovely times of year. “We want it to be on everyone’s radar and see Bricktoberfest as a positive, and something to look forward to every year,” she said.

Bricktoberfest gets underway at 11 a.m. on Saturday with a cruise-in of Jeeps, UTVs and motorcycles at O & M Street by the railroad tracks. Last year the cruise in was just Jeeps but they expanded it this year, as Kappes said since several people in Osgood like to show off and use their off road vehicles. The Osgood Kiwanis will be serving barbeque available from 11 a.m. to sundown, with pizza by the slice after 8 p.m.

Families are encouraged to bring their children for the cookie decorating, sponsored by the Osgood Library from 11 to 1:30 p.m. and there will be free pumpkin decorating too at the building by Neil Comer’s law office. The fire department will have inflatables to enjoy, with proceeds going toward the local fire department. Something new this year is the Tri-State Artisans who will host an art session during Bricktoberfest. Located nearby Ripley Street in the same building as the pumpkin decorating, participants can try their hand at painting a fall scene. Kappes said you don’t have to be an artist, or even have artistic ability, as the instructor will guide the novice painters step by step in the process, supplying the paint, canvas and brushes. Reservations are needed by Thursday. The cost is $30.

Music is also a big part of the special event, and they are featuring local talent Jake Gaither will play acoustic music for the lunch crowd at noon and 1:30 p.m., his band “Just Another Cover Band” will play until 3p.m. Then, Blake Billman and the Tail Gate Revival Band (contemporary country and rock) will take over music duties at 3:30 to 5, followed by acoustic sounds from Dustin Huff at 5:30 and then MAC (three members of the 650North band) from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The beer and wine garden will be open until 10 p.m. Wine is from nearby Ertel’s Winery and Rettingville Wine, also an Indiana wine.

Kappes is working with a committee to organize the event. The event was initially developed by Steve Wilhoit and has the support of the town, along with businesses, clubs and more.“We want to provide the town something unique and get the people involved,” Kappes said. Major sponsors are the Osgood Grub Co. and Negangard Tent Rentals, the Town of Osgood and the Reynolds Foundation with support from several other local businesses and organizations. There will also be several vendors set up, such as the Osgood Lions Club, Carrie Miller Essential Oils, Osgood First Baptist Church, Loren Stolze and Megan Joseph Events to visit. There is no charge to hear the music, kids activities (except for the inflatables). All proceeds will go back into the event for the following year.

SR 62 slides in Dearborn, Ripley to be corrected

Indiana Department of Transportation officials met last week with its contractor and design engineer at Seymour District offices to discuss a $5 million slide correction project that will stabilize embankments along State Road 62 at two locations: one in Dearborn County and the other in Ripley County.
Beaty Construction of Boggstown, the state’s contractor, plans to construct mechanically stabilized aggregate retaining walls. These are wire mesh expanses held in place by geogrid straps and back-filled with #8 stone. The walls measure up to 30 feet in height. Clearing for the project is expected to occur in November. Continuous on-site activity will take place next year. The intermediate completion date is October 31, 2017.

SR 62 in Dearborn County will be stabilized at a slide side 3.64 miles east of the Ripley County line in Clay Township south of Dillsboro. Two retaining walls will be built to stabilize a slide area 650 feet in width. The SR 62 slide site in Ripley County is located 3 miles east of SR 129 in Brown Township west of Friendship. Six retaining walls will be constructed to stabilize an embankment 1,400 feet in width. Work in Ripley County will be interrupted in June and September to accommodate National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association events.

CDM Smith of Indianapolis is the design consultant for the project.
