Bulldogs win RCT championship in hard-fought battle over SR

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

Boys varsity RCT
Behind an exciting 21 point performance by South Ripley Raider senior Tyler Cole Coach Travis Wrightsman’s Raiders battled to a 58-25, 33 point win over the rival Jac-Cen-Del Eagles led by Coach Travis Stangland. Cole lit up the South Ripley High School nets in opening Boys Varsity Ripley County Tournament action following the 6 p.m. center court tip off on Wednesday evening, Jan. 4.

Opening night second game action
Opening night second game action would prove to be the hot ticket of the evening as the Coach Aaron Garrett led Batesville Bulldogs found themselves knee deep in battle against Coach Josh Blankinship’s Milan Indians, with the game ending with Batesville holding a 47-46, one point advantage.

Pictured left, awaiting the opening center court tip are Batesville Bulldog sophomore Robert Raver (30) and Milan Indian junior Jed Minnich (14), as teammate brother Zac Minnich (13) rises against Bulldog junior Tristian Lamppert (42), for the games opening possession.

The Bulldogs advanced to battle South Ripley in the RCT Championship contest after senior Garrett Burkhart (5) extended their lead to four with a pair of FT connections with mere seconds remaining. Senior Milan Indian Blane Beck (3) drained the downtown 3-pointer at the horn, resulting in a one point, 46-47 loss to Batesville. (Milan had won the regular season match-up over the Bulldogs 50-41 at Milan High School). One very hard fought and exciting game for fans to watch that definitely could easily have gone either way, with a different blow of the whistle along the way.

Varsity consolation: JCD vs. Milan
Saturday, Jan. 7, RCT Boys Varsity consolation 6 p.m. game action between the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles and the Milan Indians resulted in an Indians victory, 64-38.

Championship: SR vs. Batesville
A monstrous effort by South Ripley Raider junior Dillan McQueen (35) throughout the RCT boys championship battle resulted in his accumulation of 27 points to lead all scoring and earn top scorer honors. Sadly, the Raider team fell short at final horn’s sounding, 61-64, as senior Tyler Cole’s 3 point attempt with the clock expiring bounded off the rim, allowing the Bulldogs to claim victory and grasp the MVP award.
