Bulldogs capture 2017 RCT JV titles

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

Both varsity girls and varsity boys Ripley County Basketball Tournament opening action went as planned. Not so for the third night’s plan with JV teams slated to play at separate sites; that being Milan boys and girls JV action at Batesville High School, while simultaneously at JCDHS the Eagles would host the South Ripley Raiders. Icy weather dictated the re-scheduling to Saturday morning at the respective sites for first round action and JCDHS on Monday, January 9, as the re-slated Championship round for the team winners; so was the case with the boys opening the 6 p.m. center court tip where Batesville led by Coach Jay Gerkin rallied to defeat the South Ripley Raiders led by Brad Samples 31-27. The ensuing JV Girls RCT Tournament championship found the Coach Ken Tekulve led Lady Bulldogs defeating the Coach Andrew Bayne led South Ripley Lady Raiders 42-19.

Girls JV game action at Jac-Cen-Del High School on Saturday morning found Coach Andrew Bayne’s South Ripley Lady Raiders battling hosting Coach Matt McNew’s JCD Lady Eagles, with the Lady Raiders seeking out the 2-point victory by the game’s final horn’s sounding. The Lady Raiders got off to a healthy first period lead, maintained the edge through the halftime break but found the world closing in as they were knotted at 26 at the end of three, before narrowly escaping with the victory at game’s end, 34-32.
