The Versailles American Legion Post 173 Junior Shooting Sports Team recently sponsored and hosted a five-team shooting match Invitational at the NMLRA facility in Friendship on Saturday, Feb. 18, in the NMLRA Education Building. As explained by Steve Scroggins, “During the Invitational the teams and individuals compete in what is known as a “Three-Position Air Rifle” match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoot 10 shots in three different shooting positions (prone, standing and kneeling) with each shot worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete’s total, with the team score comprised of the best four athletes scores from each team.”

Post 173’s team as pictured above has five girls and two boys currently on their team, proudly led by Coach Jerry Hewitt. Of the seven, three are South Ripley students Richie Black, Jamie Thomas and Kaitlyn Schwanholt; two are Cave Hill Christian Academy students Nathan May and Riley May; Courtney Grable a Jac-Cen-Del student, and Hanna Davis a Milan student.

The five-way Invitational competition match included Hancock County 4-H from Greenfield, Seymour American Legion Post 89, Southern Indiana Sharpshooters from Jasper American Legion, Southern Indiana Rifle and Pistol Club Youth Marksmanship Program from Georgetown and hosting Versailles American Legion Post 173 Junior Shooting Sports Team.

Versailles Head Coach Jerry Hewitt thanked and acknowledged team sponsors and contributors: The National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, Shooting for the Future NRA Foundation, The Rising Sun Regional Foundation, Inc., Gene May Guns, and the Versailles American Legion.

Editors note: The air rifles used are by no means your $50 BB gun but instead cost hundreds of dollars for each unit, which most clubs furnish for their shooters use.
