Rain forces Raiders to Greensburg for home game

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

A weather forced decision on April 10 found the Coach Steven Franklin South Ripley Raiders boys varsity baseball team on the road to battle the Coach Scott Holdsworth Greensburg Pirates at Greensburg High School, with South Ripley slated as the home team.

South Ripley Raider Cory Walker opened on the mound for SR where he found the Pirates up for the challenge, claiming the 10 run rule win in 5 innings. Opening his evening’s work with a strikeout, he would face four more batters before getting out of the top of the first inning for the Raiders to take their turn at bat, with the game scoreless. The Raiders at bat found first batter, senior Evan Baurley hit by a pitch reaching and eventually scoring before the team went down on outs with the 1-0 lead. The top of the second inning for Walker and the Raiders quickly went down hill, as the Pirates sent eight batters to the plate, accumulating four runs to lead 4-1. Trailing 0-4, South Ripley was retired one, two, three and back to the field, they went on defense.

In the top of the third, after facing two more Pirate batters, freshman Avery Halcomb was called in from the bullpen in relief for Walker, who had faced 15 batters while delivering 5 Ks, 5 walks, and was charged with 4 runs and 2 hits at bat.
Halcomb took over with the Raiders in the hole 1-4, escaping the inning with no further scoring by Greensburg, while facing just two batters. The scoreless third by the Pirates was the calm before the storm as South Ripley would soon encounter. The SR Raiders’ third inning batting resulted in just four batters going to the plate before returning to a defensive position on the field.

The Pirates sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the fourth, scoring five more runs to lead 9-1. The Raiders fourth found positivity as two runs crossed the plate, resulting in a 3-9 deficit. A Pirates eruption again developed in the top of the fifth, where they collectively added four more runs, three off the home run shot by Reynolds. South Ripley’s fifth inning at bat resulted in four batters with one LOB at games end, falling 3-13 by the five inning 10 run rule. South Ripley Raider Halcomb’s pitching line read as follows: Three innings pitched where he faced 17 batters, struck out one, walked one, hit one batter and was charged with 9 Pirate runs. Pirates pitcher of record, Ricketts, went the distance for the five inning bout, facing 23 Raiders batters, while collecting 8 Ks.
