South Ripley over JCD 69- 49 to become ORVC champs

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

The long time rivalry between the South Ripley Raiders and Jac-Cen-Del Eagles basketball teams annually concludes with the teams playing each other in the final game of their regular seasons. It was especially appropriate this year as they each carried 5-0 ORVC (Ohio River Valley Conference) season records into the final game match-up where the winner would be deemed the outright Conference Champ. Not only was the conference title on the line but also possession of the Ripley Publishing Co. Inc. Traveling Pride Trophy.

South Ripley Raiders Head Coach Travis Wrightsman, in his eighth season, led the Raiders to a victory in the annual Turkey Shoot-out opening meeting back in November against first year Head Coach Travis Stangland’s Eagles by a final count of 58-39. The Raiders again defeated JCD in the 2016 annual Ripley County Tournament action opener 63-46, before claiming the RCT Championship Title with a 20 point, 74-54 final count. With high hopes, the Eagles traveled to SRHS gym on senior night, Feb. 26, for the final showdown, even though just days earlier they had lost the assistance of 6'8" Connor Hubbard to a hip injury; however, the Raiders’ intentions had not lessened either.

The Game

Despite a center court tip controlled by the Eagles just 10 seconds into the action, Raiders senior Ty Tucker netted the first score of the game with a rare 3-point delivery. South Ripley senior Brady Meyer followed with one of two FT connections. Eagles senior Maverick Dwenger struck pay-dirt with a FG, but Raider Tucker delivered his second 3-pointer, followed by senior teammate Kaleb Riley’s scoring of a FG for 7-2. Having seen enough, Eagle Coach Stangland called for a time-out to reset. Resuming action found Raider Meyer back on the charity stripe where he again made one of two offerings. Raiders senior Elijah Roepke secured a score in the record with his delivery of 3-pointer for 13-2. Eagles junior Reuben Benham rang the scoring bell with his first FG, only to find Raider Meyer negating the points with a pair of FT connections. Back-to-back Eagle FG scores followed at the hands of Dwenger and senior teammate Tyler Huff. Raider Riley connected for a FG, followed by an Eagle senior Evan Borgman FG delivery, however, in ending first period scoring, Raider Tucker and sophomore teammate Cory Walker each added FG scores to take SR's opening period lead to 11 at 21-10.
For all purposes, the game had basically taken the turn it would end up following with SR claiming the conference title and the Pride Trophy.

Quarter Two
Raider Walker drilled a 3-pointer to open second period action only to have Eagles senior Devon Wilson negate the effort with a 3-pointer of his own. Eagle Huff and Raider Tucker cancelled each other’s FG deliveries. A Raider Meyer FG score at the 3:16 mark led to an Eagle Borgman one of two FT connections. A Raider barrage of field goals were delivered in succession by Walker and Tucker, including a Walker 3-pointer before the halftime break, which found the halftime score SR 39-16 JCD.

Second Half
The third period ended SR 59-37 over JCD. Completion of the final period played resulted in an SR 69-49 JCD, a 20 point margin of victory.

Eagles / Raiders JV Action Results in Raider Victory

The first two meetings of South Ripley Raider JV led by veteran coach Brad Samples found first year coach Brad Goldsberry’s Eagle JV a mark unable to conquer; however, in the final game of the season the Raiders claimed victory by a 23 point margin.
