Versailles State Park celebrates 100 years
Activities celebrate 4th of July

Ripley County residents have several options to celebrate the nation’s birthday. On Friday, July 1, there are two fireworks events, one at the state park and another at the fairgrounds in Osgood. On Monday, July 4th, Milan will host a parade and fireworks.

Osgood
The Ripley County Chamber of Commerce will host the 16th annual chamber night, “United We Stand” fireworks at the Ripley County Fairgrounds in Osgood on Friday, July 1, beginning at 5 p.m. and culminating with fireworks provided by the Gilmore and Golda Reynolds Foundation. Amy Thomas, executive director, says to bring the whole family and also your lawn chairs to enjoy the free music by Centerline Band at 7 p.m. There will be food booths, a flea market and crafts available to peruse as well.

Versailles
This year, Versailles State Park has changed its traditional Fourth of July celebration to Friday, July 1. They also are going all out in honor of the 100 years of state parks. Fireworks will be presented by Yokum Fireworks with music accompanying it. It’s actually dubbed a “pyromusical” and park officials claim it will be a spectacular show. A live band will perform prior, beginning at 8 p.m. There is no cost, as the gate admission has been waived starting at 7 p.m. There are no other centennial events for the weekend, but the naturalist will be hosting programs at the Nature Center one being a chance to make snake bracelets at 7 p.m. Friends of the Versailles States Park will be selling glow necklaces and bracelets too. On July 3 at 8:30, p.m. the Friends will show a free movie at the Oak Grove shelter for the community. The bigger park birthday bash will be on July 23 at 2 p.m. with historic programs. Look for more details as the date approaches.

Milan
Milan’s celebration gets underway on Friday, July 1, with a youth baseball tournament that runs throughout the weekend. On Saturday, a night walk/run, Running Hog 5K, has been planned for 9 p.m. with registration at 7:30 p.m. and the race beginning at Hoosier Links Golf Course. Food is a big part of the weekend also. On Sunday, the Milan Baptist Church has an ice cream social from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Monday, July 4, the Methodist Church plans an all you can eat breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. There is a chicken dinner at the Milan fire department from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a steak dinner being offered at the VFW from noon to 9 p.m. Ripley County’s only 4th of July Parade is on Monday, at 10 a.m. with the highlight of the long weekend being the fireworks at the Daren Baker Memorial Park at dusk. The American Legion Post 235 is sponsoring the Rozzi firework display.

Batesville
A fireworks display will be held on Saturday night in Batesville at the Hillcrest Country Club.

Application deadline is Friday, August 5.
Tyson Fund grant applications available
Many years ago, before Jim Tyson passed away, he wanted to set up a system to perpetually assist the residents in Versailles with things that might otherwise increase their taxes. He decided that he would set up a trust so that groups that are nonprofit and hold an IRS 501c (3) or (4) exemption could request funds to help them out with projects that would otherwise fall on the taxpayers in the Versailles area! For more information about the Tyson Fund, eligibility and how to apply read page 2 of the Osgood Journal dated June 14.

Contest is set for July 17.
Applications available for county queen contest
