Last scene etched on Memorial

The Ripley County War Memorial at the courthouse square is about to be finished, some 20 years later. A war scene is being etched on the last panel by the same artist who did the other scenes. Jan Salzman, a graphic artist with Jonas Monument in Harrison, said it will take “many weeks” to etch the 4’ by 9 ‘ design on the granite panel. She started Sept. 1, using a diamond tip dremel, but her work days are dependent on the weather. This week it has been nice! The Ripley County Memorial Committee commissioned Jonas Monuments once again for the design. Ken Hylton, veterans administrator, said the committee meets quarterly and submitted some ideas to the monument company. “We wanted to make sure the recent veterans had a part in it. We had other wars represented on the east side and realized a lot has happened since then,” Hylton said.

Jan Salzman, pictured left, has made progress on the panel since she began a few weeks ago.

The committee is funding the design and uses donations and money from brick and paver sales at the foundation of the monument. This design will reflect the Middle East wars. The committee also maintains the landscaping and bricks, and annually pressure washes the floor. Rain causes the discoloration of the bricks. A rededication of the new panel will likely be held at some point once it is finished, Hylton said. Look for details to come.

Local groups help Louisiana flood victims

Four Osgood residents drove a trailer full of donated totes and cleaning supplies over 1,900 miles to give to flood victims of Louisiana. Bill and Toni McDonald, daughter Lynn McDonald and DJ Simon departed the evening of Thursday Sept. 8 with the Knights of Columbus Indiana State Council Disaster Response trailer. The trailer was loaded with 650 totes and supplies donated by various K of C councils and individual from Indiana and the Osgood and Versailles Lions Clubs.

A local group brought a trailer full of donated items to Louisiana flood victims. Pictured left from left, DJ Simon, Toni and Bill McDonald, Lynn McDonald drove the trailer and are pictured with Vernon Faucheux and Carnell J. Fontevot of Knights of Columbus Council #2657 Gonzales, Louisiana.

Bill and Toni are members of the Osgood Lions Club and Bill is the K of C Indiana State Council Disaster Response Coordinator. Bill has been in contact with the Louisiana K of C State Council and Catholic Charities Disaster Response Teams and received a list of items that are in short supply in the area.

The McDonalds and daughters Keri and Lynn started requesting donations from area businesses, Osgood and Versailles Lions Clubs and K of C Councils to hopefully fill the trailer with those suggested items. K of C Council in Lawrenceburg, Bright, Indianapolis and Osgood, along with the Lions Clubs of Osgood and Versailles, made major donations to this effort, Bill said, and the Knights of Columbus Indiana State Council made matching council’s donations. He noted that over 100,000 homes were affected by the historic flooding in the Baton Rouge area. Tom Tepe Auto of Milan and Enterprise Car Rental in Cincinnati along with Walmart in Lawrenceburg, Lowes in Madison and Lawrenceburg, and Menards stores in Columbus, Greenwood and Jeffersonville, assisted with donations or discounted merchandise. Several individuals from Osgood, Lawrenceburg and Aurora made generous personal donations, Bill added.

It took about 12 hours to reach their destination just south of Baton Rouge where they unloaded the totes at an area Disaster Relief Center warehouse. The items had been out of stock locally. The items were then given to the Louisiana Knights in Gonzales, Louisiana, and 50 totes to the Catholic Charities in Amite, Louisiana. The McDonalds helped in the local relief center before heading home the following day. Bill and Toni were very active in the Holton and Henryville tornado relief effort. Some of the items donated to that cause came from the K of C Councils that were affected by the historic flooding in Louisiana. Bill stated, “This is a small way we can pay back their generosity.” Donations are still being accepted to offset the cost. Checks can be sent to Indiana State Council Charity Fund Inc., or 5756 W. Fairground Road, Osgood, 47037.
