Thorp L. Wolford
Thorp L. Wolford, 94, passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2012, in Louisville, KY. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn C. Wolford; children, Elizabeth W. Finch, Linda W. Carter, Stephen T. (Coretta) Wolford, Richard T. Wolford, John B. (Mary) Wolford, Mary W. (Andy) Arnault, and Roger J. (Pam) Wolford; 15 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leah J. Wolford and Leo T. Wolford. After his mother died tragically young, Thorp spent much of his childhood in Versailles with his grandmother, Allie Belle Underwood Jackson, and visiting with relatives. He maintained a lifelong connection to Versailles, both with personal and with business ties, He last was in Versailles in 2010 to listen to a paper presented at the Ripley County Historical Society about his mother and her book, The Play-Party in Indiana, which was based on Ripley County research. He was a graduate of Harvard College, Harvard Law School, and the University of Louisville where he earned a Master of Arts degree in English. He began a career in law in Louisville in 1948 which continued for over 60 years. While practicing law full-time he also taught American literature in the University College at the University of Louisville for seventeen years from the 1950s until the early 1970s. Thorp served as Trustee of Franklin College, Franklin, where he was also conferred an honorary doctorate. He was a former deacon and member of Walnut Street Baptist Church, a member and past president of The Arts Club of Louisville, and a life member of and former counsel to The Filson Historical Society of Louisville. He was a life member, director, and past president of the University of Louisville Library Associates. He served, side by side with his cousin Max Underwood, as a Director of The Ripley County Bank in Versailles, Indiana, for decades. His other memberships included the Wranglers Club of which he served as recording secretary for 30 years, the Conversation Club, the Kiwanis Club of Louisville, the Indiana Historical Society, The Veterans of Future Wars of which he was a founding member, the Joe Stopher Sunday school class at Broadway Baptist Church, the Louisville Bar Association and Kentucky Bar Association, The Executives Club of Louisville, The Pendennis Club, and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. Thorp delivered the Founders Day Address in 1977 at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and is the author of various academic and literary works including, "Democratic-Republican Party Reaction in Massachusetts to the Embargo of 1847" (published in 1942), "The Laws and Liberties of 1648" (published in 1948), "Edward Eggleston: Evolution of a Historian" (published in 1967), and co-author with his wife of Going On, (published in 2010), a collection of poetry. A funeral service was held Monday, February 13, at Broadway Baptist Church, in Louisville, Kentucky, with graveside service at Cave Hill Cemetery immediately following. Lavonne Carey
Lavonne Carey, 83, of Milan, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at Ripley Crossing in Milan. Lavonne was born March 15, 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio the daughter of Nathan and Ruth (Lambert) McCardle. She was married to Howard Carey July 26, 1951 and he preceded her in death April 10, 1985. She was a former employee of US Shoe Corp. in Osgood, and was a licensed beautician, having owned and operated her own beauty shop several years ago. She was a member of the Moores Hill Church of Christ, and enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and loved children. Mrs. Carey is survived by daughter, Sue Carey and son, Howard Carey both of Milan, grandchildren Elizabeth and Carl Baker and great grandchild Colton Baker. She was preceded in death by a daughter Carol Lea Carey in 1970. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 16 at Laws-Carr- Moore Funeral Home, Milan with Brother(s) Tom Holt and Tito Pel officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials be made in her name to the Ruth Lyons Childrens Fund, which she dearly loved and supported. Eileen Marie (Burwinkel) Hagedorn
Eileen Marie (Burwinkel) Hagedorn, 79, of Washington Court House, Ohio, and formerly of Loveland, Ohio, passed away Monday, February 13, 2012 at Washington Court House where she had been residing with her daughter, Nancy Cutter, for three years. Mrs. Hagedorn was born June 16, 1932 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Henry B. and Edith Millard Burwinkel. She was a member of St. Margaret of York Catholic Church and was active in the RCIA program for 25 years. She served over 4,000 hours as a volunteer at Bethesda North Hospital. Mrs. Hagedorn was preceded in death by her parents and three husbands, Charles F. Hagedorn, Hilary H. Rosson and Thomas J. Boyd. She is survived by her two sons, Dr. William J. (Beverly) Boyd of Batavia and James M. (Jennifer) Rosson of Chandler, AZ; a daughter, Nancy R. (Alan) Cutter of Washington Court House, two stepdaughters, Sister Barbara A. Hagedorn, S.C. and Janice Hagedorn of Cincinnati and a stepson, Charles G. (Judy) Hagedorn of Aurora. She was the loving grandmother of 16 and great grandmother of eight. She is also survived by three sisters, Elizabeth L. (Richard) Heideman, Alice V. (Thomas) Mitter, Nancy R. (John) Geary and a brother, Henry B. (Maryann) Burwinkel. The funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, February 17, at 11:30 a.m. at the St. Margaret of York Catholic Church, 9483 Columbia Road, Loveland, Ohio by the Rev. Father Jan Schmidt, pastor at the church. Immediately following she will be laid to rest next to her mother at the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in St. Bernard, Ohio. Albert Miller, Sr.
Albert E. Miller Sr. of Lawrenceburg passed away Tuesday February 14, 2012 at University Hospital inCincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Miller was born August 19, 1951 in Aurora, the son of James F. and Shirley R. (Jump) Miller. He was the food and beverage manager for Ramada Inn for 27 years. He was a US Army Veteran during the Viet Nam era. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion of Moores Hill. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Heart House, and loved listening to music, especially Jerry Lee Lewis, raising boxer dogs, playing cards, and spending times with friends and family. Albert is survived by a son, Albert Miller Jr. of Columbus, Indiana; brothers Curtis (Dottie) Miller of Columbus, Donald Miller of Sunman, Larry Miller of Versailles, Tommy Joe Miller of Lawrenceburg, sisters Cathy Bruton of Westport, Debbie Tunny of Batesville, and Diana (Randall) Morris of Moores Hill. One brother, James Kenneth Miller preceded in death in 1956. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the Family. Memorials may be made to the Family.
