Lady
Eagle Val Wagner is named the 2008 Top Female Athlete
of the Ripley County Track & Field Meet held at Batesville
Gary Franklin, Sports
Writer
Her nickname could be "Speed", as she lays a
blur across the track as she runs the 100m Dash, the 200m
Dash and the 400m Dash, but then when she long jumps from
here to over-yonder, what would you nickname her? Be it
basketball, softball or track & field. Jac-Cen-Del
Lady Eagle Valorie Wagner has few limitations and a super
personality
No, that's not my opinion, ask anyone who knows, or has
had the good fortune to meet the JCD junior.
At different times a person shines and catches the eye
of the sports community, Val is one of those shining people
we hear about.
In the Ripley County Track & Field Meet held at Batesville
on Thursday, May 1, Wagner won first place in all three
Dash events, and captured a second place in the Long Jump
competition. She was then selected as the "Female
Ripley County Female T&F Athlete of the Meet."
Her winning time in the 100m Dash was :13.00, in the 200m
Dash - :26.80 and in the 400, her time was 1:03.50. Her
Long Jump efforts capped at this particular meet at 16'11,
just one inch shy of first place.
Many others had positive performances registered at the
meet as well. Milan Lady Indian junior, Shelby Zornes
managed to win both the Shot Put and the Discus competitions.
Zornes Shot Put distance was 29' 6.5", enough to
put friend SR Lady Raider Lacy Wards Put of 29'3.5"
into second place, and Zornes' Discus winning distance
was 101' 11", sixteen feet two inches farther than
second place, SR Lady Raider Jordan Vinup.

Eagle varsity
teams silence Raider bats
Gary Franklin, Sports Writer
A combination of South Ripley Raider vs Jac-Cen-Del
Eagle sports' activites took place on Monday evening,
May 5. The Raider JV baseball team and the Raider varsity
and JV softball teams, traveled to JCDHS for action, with
the originally scheduled varsity baseball game being transferred
from JCDHS to SRHS, Forest G. Waters Field.
Their earlier game scheduled for SRHS was played at JCDHS
due to the new fence not being ready, which prompted the
reversal of the varsity baseball game site.

(Eagles defeat Raiders 6-0)
An expected battle of the pitchers duo, did not develop,
as Eagle senior hurler Brandon Gehl faced off against
Raider senior ace, BJ Sieverding.
The 6-0 score at game's end would in the least be explained
as unanticipated, at least by the Raider followers. They
have been on a solid roll and Sieverding has led much
of the way to that end. Not this night though.
The Eagle battery got to the young right hander, and Gehl
with support of the defense behind him contained the Raider
offensive attack.
First inning action resulted in Eagle Blake Sutton, David
Busch and Brock Billman being retired in order. The Raider
batters followed suit as Russ Steinhauer, Brian Thomas
and Jared Keck also going down for no score after one
complete.
In the second inning, Sieverding retired the three senior
batters faced, Zach Simon, Brandon Gehl and Eric Horan,
in order by strikeouts on each. Gehl and the Eagles retired
the Raider batters, Sieverding, Thomas Welch and Blake
Richmond, while collecting his third strike out of the
game.
After two Eagles were retired, (Gerald Hardesty and Shane
Adams) to open the third inning, Eagle senior catcher
Andrew Huff drew a walk. Sutton singled, Busch walked,
Billman was hit by a pitch which led to a double by Zach
Simon. Eagle Gehl went down on strikes to retire the side,
but not before they had opened a 4-0 lead. Gehl dashed
two Raiders hopes with strike outs and the third grounded
out 4-3. Raider batters in the third were Kyle Patrick,
Andy Miller, Chase Grider and Russ Steinhauer.
Sieverding went to work in the top of the fourth, ringing
up Horan, Hardesty and Adams to strike out counts. Eagle
Gehl responded, retiring Thomas and Sieverding to K's
and grounding out Keck 4-3.
Eagles Huff, Sutton and Busch were the batters in the
top of the fifth, with Raiders sending Welch, Richmond
and Patrick to the plate.
The sixth went smoothly for Sieverding, as Eagles Billman,
Simon, Gehl and Horan were quickly disposed of in order.
Gehl's sixth required five Raider batters to face him
to get out of the inning. They were Miller, Grider, Steinhauer,
Thomas and Keck.
The Eagles entered the top of the seventh still leading
by four, but were faced by Jared Keck in a relief pitching
roll. Gerald Hardesty drew a walk followed by Shane Adams'
single to score Hardesty. Huff went down on strikes, which
led to a Sutton sacrifice fly that scored Adams. Busch
reached on an error before Billman was rang up on the
strike count for the third out to end the inning.
The Raiders last hope of scoring in the game went up in
smoke in the bottom half of the seventh, trailing 6-0,
with three consecutive retired batters in Sieverding,
Welch and Richmond.

(Eagles defeat Raiders 10-0)
An explosive Lady Eagle team went to work on the visiting
Lady Raiders early, and continued to hammer away at them
to a five inning, 10-0, run rule close.
The Lady Eagle battery worked steadfastly against the
young Lady Raider right hander, Kyla Sexton, on the mound,
and responded well defensively behind Lady Eagle Regina
Ricke to hold SR scoreless through four and a half innings.
The Lady Eagles scored one in the first, added four more
in the second, one in the third, one in the fourth and
rallied for three in the fifth to shorten the game at
10-0.
Following a superb outing by senior Kaylin Ploeger in
her mound action against the Madison Shawe Lady Hilltoppers
in which she pitched seven innings, facing 22 batters,
allowing no runs on one hit, a walk and collected six
K's, to win 7-0, Coach Brad Samples called on Regina Ricke
to face the Lady Raider line up, who delivered as well.
