Marie Christine (Otte) Werner

Marie Christine (Otte) Werner, age 91, of Greenfield, passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Ripley Crossing in Milan. She was born on September 13, 1926 in Olean, the daughter of William John Henry and Lucia Augusta (Lomatch) Otte.

She graduated from Cross Plains High School in 1944. Marie married Norman C. Werner on June 9, 1962 at St. Paul Lutheran in Olean. Marie was a homemaker and a loving mother. She was currently a member at St. James Lutheran Church in Greenfield and a previous member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning vegetables, and volunteering at her church, where she assisted the secretary with office work.

Marie is survived by her children, Jerry (Merrell) Webster of Versailles, and Terri (Roger) Schwarzkopf of Greenfield; three grandchildren, Mike (Sally) Webster, Marsha (Tad) Brinson and Molly Schwarzkopf; six great-grandchildren, Erin, Sarah, Emily, Jacob, Kelsey and Abigail; and three great great grandchildren, Allie, Payton and Hailey. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norman Werner; and two sisters, Ella “Dopey” West and Dorothy Huntington.

A funeral service was held Monday, September 25, at St. James Lutheran Church, Greenfield, with Pastor Larry Gember officiating. A graveside committal followed at St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery in Olean. Memorial contributions may be made by mail to the St. James Lutheran Church, 1741 S. State Street, Greenfield, IN 46140 or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, 1612 Bishop Lane, Canaan, IN 47224. Envelopes will be available at the mortuary and church. Willie “Jay” Watts


Willie “Jay” Watts, 74, of Madison, passed away Friday, September 22, 2017 at his home. He was born at Hallie in Letcher County, Kentucky on August 23, 1943, the son of Pearl and Cinda Smith Watts.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Schmidt of Versailles and Kathy Lovins of Greensburg; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren; one brother William Watts of Holton; six sisters Juanita (Bob) Adams of Shelbyville, Glenna (Tom) Sunn of LaPorte, Sharon (Bill) Back of Canaan, Christina Wooten of Kentucky, Velma Hamilton of Moorhead, Kentucky, and Sue ( Darrell) Gross of Florence, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Fred, Dee, Lawrence, Billy, Bub, and Pearl Jr., and his sisters Vergie Whitaker, Effie Campbell, and Imogene Leach. Mr. Watts was a 38-year employee of Reliance Electric in Madison, retiring in 2001. In his spare time, Willie was an avid fisherman.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 26 at 6 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until time of services. Burial will follow at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Jefferson County Animal Shelter in care of the funeral home.


Dennis E. “Denny” Lyon

Dennis E. “Denny” Lyon, age 84, of Canaan, passed away Friday, September 22, 2017. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 28 at 1 p.m. at the Indian-Kentuck Baptist Church, Canaan. Interment will follow in the Canaan Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, Madison, and Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Canaan Cemetery Association, the Jefferson County 4-H Scholarship or the Canaan Volunteer Fire Department. Elaine L. (Knudson) McCarthy

Elaine L. (Knudson) McCarthy, 81, of Largo, FL, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 24, 2017 in Largo. Elaine was born September 1, 1935 in Cross Plains, to the late Harlon and Mary E. (Pelsor) Knudson.

Elaine had lived in Largo since 1961 and retired from Honeywell after 33 years of service. She was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church of Largo, where she volunteered in several capacities for many years. Elaine was predeceased by her loving husband Edwin in 2014. She is survived by three brothers, H. Jerome (Harriet) Knudson of Dayton, OH, Delbert (Arlene) Knudson, and Norman (Pina) Knudson both of Holton; a sister, Daphne (Rex) Heiny of Pekin; along with several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be offered to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1199 South Highland Avenue, Largo, FL 33770. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in Elaine’s memory at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 1 at the Holton Christian Church in Holton. Family and friends are invited to attend.
