Josh Barnett - Sports Editor

Milan's football team set the tone early in the opening round of the sectional tournament at Edinburgh last Friday when Jeremy Herbert ran the opening kickoff 85 yards for the touchdown to give the Indians an early 6-0 lead after the failed PAT (point after touchdown) attempt. From there the Indians would go on to defeat the Edinburgh Lancers 46-12 to advance to the second round of the tournament.

After Herbert's kickoff TD the Indians scored again in the first when Bob Stanley intercepted a pass and returned it for a 35 yard touchdown. Milan connected on a two-point conversion to give them a 14-0 lead. The Lancers made their way to the endzone before the end of the first quarter but missed the PAT to make the score 14-6 after one quarter of play.

The Indians added three more scores in the second quarter. The first came on a Matt Posten 53 yard touchdown run. The next two came from Bob Stanley, one on a 56 yard run and the other on a 2 yard run. All three PAT's were missed giving the Indians a total of 32 points. At the end of the first half Milan was leading 32-6.

Milan was held scoreless in the third quarter but Edinburgh managed to add 6 to their total when their running back broke off for a 72 yard TD run, but they missed the PAT. At the end of three quarters the Indians were still leading 32-12.

Bob Stanley broke off for another long scoring run when he ran the ball 44 yards for the Indians fifth touchdown of the game. Nick Arthur scored the Indians' final touchdown of the game on an 8 yard run to give Milan their 46 points. Edinburgh was held scoreless in the fourth giving the Indians the 46-12 victory.

On offense the Indians compiled 414 total yards, 410 on the ground and 4 in the air. They had 10 total first downs and 65 yards on 12 Lancer penalties.

Bob Stanley led with 129 rushing yards on 9 carries with a long of 56 and three TD's. Matt Posten had 107 yards on 7 carries with a long of 53 yards and a touchdown. Nick Arthur also had a rushing TD on 5 carries for 25 yards.

Rusty Ison threw the ball only 8 times and had 2 completions for 4 yards. Andy McIntosh had a reception for 10 yards (the Indians completed a pass for -6 yards, which is why they only had 4 passing yards.)

On defense the Indians allowed Edinburgh 215 yards, 101 rushing and 114 passing. They gave up just 7 first downs and were called for 11 penalties for 110 yards.

Derek Pennington led the Indians with 6 solo tackles, 2 for a loss. Andy McIntosh and Michael Burdette both had 5 solo tackles. Burdette chalked up a sack in the contest. Bob Stanley, Jeremy Herbert and Josh Schwanholt all had an interception in the contest.

Milan continues sectional play this Friday at Manuel High School in Indianapolis against last year's 1A state champions Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter. Kick off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
