JV volleyball teams battle it out in ORVC Tourney

The 2005 ORVC Ladies Reserve Volleyball Tournament was held in Osgood, in the gyms of JCD High School and JCD Elementary School, on Saturday August 20. Two teams were scheduled to play simultaneously at each site.

The games began at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning at both gyms, continued the scheduled game two contests at 10:15 a.m., and on schedule, started the final rounds near noon.

The schools represented in the tournament were Jac-Cen-Del, Milan, Rising Sun, and South Ripley.

Seated at the high school for the first game were Milan and Rising Sun. Seated for the first contest at JCDES were Jac-Cen-Del and long time rival South Ripley. In the opener at JCDHS, Rising Sun took the best two of three matches defeating Milan with scores of 25-13, and 25-19 in back to back games. Rising Sun secured the first set win for the tournament.

SR vs. JCD Game

At JCDES, the Raiders and the Eagles battled for the win. The first serve of the game was by JCD's #2, Natasha Gregory. South Ripley won the point and with that the first lead of the game. Quickly the game was tied as SR's #5, Erica Ester watched her serve attempt fall short into the net. The game was again tied at 2. With a score of 7 to 5, South Ripley in the lead, Raider #2, Chelsea Durham went to work at the serve line. A scoring run of 8-5, 9-5, 10-5, 11-5, 12-5, and JCD Coach Tina Ashley called for a timeout.

Following the timeout, JCD regained the ball on a miscommunication between the SR squad. The score was then 12 to 6, the Raiders leading.

At a score of 17 to 11, Lady Eagle #1, Regina Ricke took to the serving line and led her team on a come back run, to the score of 18 to 15.

Serving Raider #3, Kellie Collier, added to their lead. At 21 to 15, JCD Coach Ashley called for her second timeout. Following the timeout, the Raiders gained one more point, but then gave one back as the serve changed. The score was 22-16. When the score had reached 24-18, Lady Raider #11, Katie Polly served for the twenty-fifth point. With her serve, a score and a win of game one by the Lady Raiders, securing a one to none lead, in the best two of three game match.

In Game two, of the Raider/Eagle match, South Ripley's #2, Chelsea Durham began with the serve. The serve fell short and dropped into the net giving JCD the first score of the game. The Lady Eagles took their advantage to a 5 to 2 lead off the serving of #9, Danielle Leighty. Neither team gained while serving more than one to three points, up to the score of 13 to 11, with JCD yet in the lead.

Raider Durham went to the serve line and took the game to a tie at 13, however, JCD regained the lead at 14 to 13. A tie at 14, an Eagle lead at 15-14, and then Janine Huff, #6 for the Eagle squad, served to advance their lead to 18 to 14. Coach Payne called a timeout. Following the timeout, Huff drove on to the score of 23 to 15.

Only minutes passed since a tie game at 14. JCD held on and took the game 25-18. The Raider first game win and the Eagle second game win , set up the need for a third deciding match to declare a winner for the match.

Game three opened with a serve by Raider Durham, who served the Raiders to a 3 to 1 lead. Later, with the score 9 to 5, Raider #1, Paige Fossett toed the line to serve an ace for a 10 to 5 lead.

Eagle Coach Ashley called a timeout. Following the timeout, Fossett continued to the score of 12 to 6. Lady Eagle, #10, Audrey Huffmeyer served to the score of 12 to 8. With the game tightening up, SR Coach Payne again called timeout. Huffmeyer served to a 13-10 score, and the Raiders next serve went awry, score 13 to 11 in a game to be decided by the first team to reach fifteen points.

Eagle #1, Ricke served the game to a tie at 13. Coach Payne called another timeout. The serve following the timeout was into the net, thus a Raider lead at 14 to 13. Again the game was tied at 14.

Jac-Cen Del's Natasha Gregory served for an ace and the JCD victory in their second match win at 15 to 14 to the Raiders one win.

Eagles declared the game winner.

Round two of the ORVC tournament paired Rising Sun against Jac-Cen-Del at the high school, and Milan against South Ripley at the elementary. Again Rising Sun won their game in a two match sweep with the scores of RS 25 to JCD 23 in the first and RS 25 to JCD 9.

Milan vs. SR Game

In the Raiders vs Indians match, ties at 1, 2, 3, and 4, before with a 5 to 4 lead, SR #10, Jana Lloyd served to a 7 to 5 lead. The game progressed in a "gain a little-lose a little" mode with no great advantage for either team all the way to the final score of SR 25, Milan 23.

Game two of Milan/South Ripley match, scores were tied at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. SR was in the lead at 8 to 6 when Milan's #2, Kara Teer, went to the serving line. The Indians took the lead as they ran off six straight points putting them in the lead at 12 to 9. At a score of 16 to 13 with Milan in the lead, Milan's #9, Jessica Wessler began serving. She continued to serve to the score of 22-14, and the Indians went on to win 25 to 15 over the Raiders.

In Game three, SR got off to a 4 to 1 lead, but at the score of 8 to 5, #4, Darcy Robinson went to work for the Indians and took the lead in the game at the score, 11 to 9. Milan won the game 15 to 9 and their second win of three giving them the game victory.

Rising Sun was again victorious in back to back contests in their third team to play. The Shiners defeated SR with scores of 25 to 21 and 25 to 11.

JCD vs. Milan Game

Milan served first, but JCD scored the first point. At a score of 4 to 1, JCD's Ricke served to take the score to 11 to 2. Robinson of Milan served from 13-3 to 14-7. The game progressed with teams gaining one or two points sporadically to a final score of JCD 25 to 21 for Milan.

Game two, Eagle Gregory opened with a serve for first point. Scoring ties followed at 2, 3, 4, and 5.

At the score of 17 to 16, with Milan in the lead, Lady Eagle # 11, Tanasha Simon served to a tie score at 17. Simon continued to serve, giving the Lady Eagles the lead at the score of 21 to 18. The game was again tied at scores of 23 and 24. With the score tied Milan #5, Becca Haugh, served to take the second game victory. Both teams earned a game win, therefore game three decided the match winner.

Game three, the final game of the match, posted JCD on the serve line. A serve by Lady Eagle Gregory opened the game. Harlement of the Eagle team was called for net interference, giving the first point of the game to Milan. A tie at one followed. Lady Indian Jessica Weesler served to a 4 to 2 score.

At a score of 5 to 2, Milan's #6, Kayla Stutler, served to a lead of 8 to 3. Milan gained points little by little through several different servers and JCD likewise gained points as play continued.

At a score of 14 to 6, with Milan in the lead, of a game to fifteen for the win, Lady Eagle Gregory went to the serve line. Score one for JCD, the second by on ace serve, and Milan Coach Siebert called a time-out.

Following the timeout, Gregory served for points 9, 10, 11, and 12. Coach Siebert called another timeout. Gregory went to the line again following the timeout and served. After a long volley, Milan scored. 15 to 12 for game and 2 to 1 match victory.

Annual Raider Open to be held Sept. 10

The Annual Raider 4-person Golf Scramble will be held on Saturday, September 10, at North Branch, located at 8492 E. Base Rd., Greensburg.

Tee time will be at 1:00 p.m. (slow time).

The cost is $50.00 per person, which includes green fees, cart, lunch, and prizes for everyone.

The proceeds are be used to benefit the South Ripley Raider Basketball teams.
