Milan wins 2nd round of Sectional #38

A final score of 24-6 in a round 2 sectional game against the South Decatur Cougars solidified a victory and the opportunity to advance.

A scoreless first quarter led to the second, where scoring would make it a 14-6 game at the halftime break.

With the game clock at 10:55 in the second quarter, Indian Nick Arthur carried the ball for a 2 yd. touchdown run that was followed by a Derek Pennington extra point kick for a Milan lead of 7-0.

At 8:27, in a 3rd and 24 situation, the ball on the 38 yard line, a Cougar Tyler Mote to Skylar Breece completion went for a 55 yard gain putting them on the 7 yard line in a 1st and goal situation. On the ensuing Cougar play Curtis Johnson ran the ball in 7 yards for the touchdown and a 7-6 score. The attempt for the point after hit the crossbar, thus the score remained 7-6.

An Ison sack on 3rd and 12, followed by an unsportsmanlike penalty against the Indians for a half the distance penalty, set up a 4th and 30 situation, forcing the Indians to kick away.

Following a Pennington kick, the Cougars took over on the 47 yard line. Shortly thereafter, Indian Jeremy Litteral intercepted the attempted pass and the Indians took over with a 1st and 10 on the 38 yard line.

With the game clock at 1:08 yet in the second quarter, and the Indians on the 10 yard line with a 1st and goal, the Indians called a time-out.

At 44 seconds the Cougars called a time-out. At 38.5 seconds remaining in the half, Arthur carried the ball in for another 2 yard drive and touchdown followed by a Pennington extra point kick for a score of 14-6 at the half.

The second half opened on a Cougar squib kick covered by Indian Terry Moore. The Indians kicked away on 4th down, followed by the Cougars kicking away on 4th down. Back and forth, getting nowhere for a period it seemed, until Pennington kicked a 28 yard field goal for the Indians taking the score to 17-6 with 3:31 remaining in the quarter.

In the fourth quarter with the game clock at 9:15 and the Indians on the 20 yard line, Bob Stanley ran for an 80 yard touchdown, followed by a Pennington extra point kick, for a 24-6 score.

The balance of the game went scoreless by both teams and ended up at 24-6, Milan victorious.

Other Milan stats include: Nick Arthur had 18 carries for 147 yards and 2 touchdowns, Bob Stanley had 11 carries for 128 yards and 1 touchdown, Nick Riley had 2 carries for 16 yards gain, Ryan McKittrick was the leading tackler with 7, Derek Pennington and Talon Atwell had 2 sacks apiece, Jeremy Litteral had an interception, and Derek Pennington was 3/3 on point after touchdown attempts.

The Indian defense held the Cougars to a total of 180 yards of offense for the game. Milan had 12 first downs, the Cougars 7. Rushing yards for the Indians totaled 294 and just 48 for the Cougars. Rushing TDs were Milan 3- 1 for South Decatur. Passing yardage was 132 for SD to 0 for Milan. South Decatur experienced 3 turnovers during the competition and the Indians had none, and neither team scored a passing touchdown.

Park Tudor - the next foe

The Milan Indians now prepare to face a Park Tudor, a team that defeated them at Milan in overtime, 13-6 on September 9, in regular season action. The game was tied at 6 at the end of regulation.

Coach Langferman, his staff, and team have worked hard to prepare for their season run, and it is showing. With a winning attitude and a diligent work ethic his Indians are priming at the time all coaches hope for it to occur, playoffs.

The Indians have many seniors who know each game from here on could be their last and no one is ready to hang his uniform up yet, nor are the faithful Indian football fans.

The Indians will face Park Tudor in round #3 of sectional #38 on Friday, November 4th at 7:00 p.m. at Park Tudor.
