In the championship contest of
the RCT boys' varsity tournament,
held at Batesville high school,
on Saturday, January 7, the Bulldogs
proved their prowess with a victory
over the South Ripley Raiders,
50-27.
The Bulldogs controlled the opening
tip but were unable to score before
the 5:42 mark when Brittan Salatin
scored 1 of 2 FT attempts for a
1-0 Batesville lead. Seconds later,
Michael Fear scored a FG for the
Raiders for their first lead at
2-1.
Senior Brandon Seabolt added a
FG for the Raiders, 4-1, that was
quickly responded to by tournament
elect MVP, Bulldog senior, Alex
Grimsley with a FG. Raider Seabolt
scored for a 6-3 Raider lead, again
answered by the Bulldog squad,
a FG by B. Siefert for a 6-5 score.
The quarters scoring ended with
a Raider Seabolt FG taking the
tally to SR 8 to B'ville 5.
Early in the second quarter, Bulldog
Grimsley rallied for the first
3 point score of the game, and
a tie at 8. Alex Borgman's FG put
the Bulldogs in the lead at 10-8
and was quickly added to by an
Alex Siefert 3 for 13-8, initiating
a Varsity Raider Coach Scott Holdsworth
time-out at 5:34.
Raider Fear converted the old-fashioned
3 point play with a FG and a FT
to draw the Raiders to a 13-11deficit.
Bulldogs A. Siefert and Steve Vonderheide
each added 1 of 2 FT attempts and
teammates Borgman and B. Siefert
both added FG's , taking the Dog
lead to 19-11 at the half-time
break.
In the third quarter, every Raider
score was met with even greater
Bulldog scoring. Raider Seabolt's
FG was answered by A. Siefert scoring
1 of 2 attempted FT's, along with
2 Grimsley FG's to the score of
24-13.
Raider Coach Holdsworth called
a time-out at 4:18. Bulldog A.
Siefert widened the lead with a
3 point shot that found nothing
but the bottom of the net in passing
through, and Vonderheide scored
his first FG of the game for a
29-13 lead at 2:35.
As curtain time became more apparent
for the Raiders, Erik Demaree scored
a FG for just a glimmer of hope
at 29-15, but that was quickly
dashed by a Borgman FG, elevating
the deficit to 31-15. Kyle Patrick
of the Raiders missed on 2 FT attempts,
but Seabolt hit a 3 point buzzer
beater to end the quarter 31-18
Bulldogs.
In the fourth, Bulldog Colt Ryan
scored his points of the game by
connecting on a pair of FT's. Raider
Patrick's attempt to draw the Raiders
closer with a FG was quickly negated
by Bulldog Ryan's FG and FT conversion,
taking the score to 36-20.
Josh Meyer of the Bulldogs fouled
out of the game at 6:51. A Siefert
rang up a 3 pointer for the Dogs
and Bulldog Coach Melvin Siefert called
a time-out.
Raider Seabolt missed a pair of
FT attempts, and picked up his
fourth foul. Bulldog Salatin missed
the front end of the 1 + 1, but
teammate Ryan scored on the put
back to take the score to more
than double at 41-20 with but 4:40
remaining in regulation.
Raider Seabolt again missed the
front end of a 1 +1 FT opportunity,
but Bulldog Salatin capitalized
on a pair awarded him, taking the
spread to 43-20, prompting a Raider
time-out.
B. Siefert added a pair of FT's
for the Bulldogs and Raider Wes
Messer connected for his first
FG of the game. B. Siefert added
a Bulldog FG that was countered
by Raider Fear's FG and FT conversion
for the score of 46-25. A Siefert
scored a FG taking the clock to
2:00.
Both teams emptied their bench,
giving subs some tourney playing
time. As time was running down,
Demaree scored a FG for the Raiders
and Jason Meyer scored 1 of 2 FT
attempts for the final score of
Batesville 50 to South Ripley 27.
The Bulldog play proved superior
as many polls had predicted, however,
tomorrow is another day and that's
what will keep it interesting for
years to come.
"At least
in games where officiating does
not dictate outcomes."
