"Wrestling Indians" is not "Indian Wrestling"

Gary Franklin - Sports Writer

The 2006 Milan Indian Wrestling team has been ringing up wins since their season first began back in the fall.

The recent meet was the SIWC, (Southern Indiana Wrestling Conference), which would be similar to ORVC, in basketball, etc., which included 111 competitors representing 11 different high schools.

Once again the Milan Indian wrestling team awed the crowd with their positive performance efforts and attitude during the event, capturing the gold.

Individual wrestlers truly wrestle one competitor at a time at the meets, however, these individuals together are as much a team as any other sport requiring more than one person to perform at a time, ever motivating and encouraging one another.

The Milan Indian support and comradeship of wrestling coaches, scorers, and young men who actually do the wrestling is unsurpassed by any other team I have ever had the pleasure of watching. I have found them to be '3-D', (Dedicated, Directed, and Determined).

Wrestling in the SIWC, the Milan Indians took the Conference title scoring 244 points during the meet. Second place was taken by the Providence Rams with 164, third to the Southwestern (Hanover) Rebels finishing with 163 points, and fourth place went to the Charlestown Pirates at 161.5.

The Paoli Rams scored 115.5 for fifth place, and the Mitchell Blue Jackets scored 100 points for a sixth place finish. Scoring 83 for seventh place was the Forest Park Rangers, followed in eighth by the Anderson Indians with 69. Ninth place went to the Salem Lions with 34 points, tenth to the New Washington Mustangs and eleventh to Eastern Pekin, having scored 18 points each.

Milan Indian wrestling team Head Coach Roy Adams stated of the 2006 Wrestling team: "An extremely strong team for a small school", "In a non-classed sport, this team has represented their home town and area in a positive manner.

The wrestlers current record of 18 wins to 2 losses includes wins over three previously ranked teams in New Castle, Fort Wayne Snider, and Union County.

The SIWC win makes the third large tournament of which the Indians have brought home the title trophy. The other two tournaments were the Brebeuf Invitational, and the Connersville Classic".

Receiving All-Conference honors were: senior Josh Yatsko in the 135# class, Darren Hess in the 152# class, and Heath Meinders in the 171# class. Receiving Runner-up honors were Jeremy Herbert in the 140# class, Nick Yatsko in the 160# class, Shane McCormick in the 189# class, and Tanner Roark in the 275# class. Also placing for the team were Daniel Fleming in the 145# class, J.J. Mullins in the 112# class, Andrew Gress in the 130# class, and Josh Dickey in the 125# class.

Josh Yatsko was voted by the coaches as the MOW, (Most Outstanding Wrestler), of the SIWC tournament. Both Josh Yatsko and Darren Hess have exceeded 30 wins so far this season.

Coach Adams added, "the wrestlers will vie again this weekend at home against some very tough competitors from Madison, Columbus East, Rushville, Shelbyville, and New Washington." "The team stands to exceed their best record ever of 21 and 3 if they can manage more than 3 wins this weekend."

Receiving Reserve All-Conference honors were Tony Isles in the 171# class, and Jacob Fleming in the 215# class.
