Alvin “Shorty” Young
Alvin “Shorty” Young, 79, of Napoleon, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2006 at the Columbus Regional Hospital. He was born near Napoleon on March 2, 1926 the son of George and Pearl Drescher Young. He was married to Maxine Pickett on June 25, 1949 and she survives.
Other survivors include two sons Ronald Young and his wife Debbie of Versailles, Randall Young and his wife Patricia of Osgood; one daughter Rosalie Allen and her husband Stanley of Indianapolis; grandchildren Stanley Allen and his wife Melissa, Christine Adamo and Robert, Cassandra, Alex, and Kara Young; step-granddaughter Deanna Burkart and William; three great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; four brothers Syalvester (Wes) Young and his wife Genieve of Napoleon; Norman Young and Marita, Lester Young and Betty all of Osgood, Delbert Young of Los Lunas, New Mexico; two sisters Alice Bultman and her husband Cecil, Sr. and Ida Grow all of Napoleon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Earl, Walter, Roy, and Harry Young and his sisters Sadie Schmidt and Esther Barnard.
Mr. Young was an Army veteran of WWII having served in Europe. He received the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with one bronze star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Victory Medal, and the Army of Occupation Japan Medal. He was a 30 year employee of the Union Furniture Company in Batesville retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Napoleon VFW and attended the Cedar Creek Community Church.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 29 at the Cedar Creek Community Church with Rev. Garland Rudd officiating. Burial was in the Flat Rock Cemetery near Osgood.
Memorials may be given to the Cedar Creek Church or the Flat Rock Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

Bertha Emma Beetz
Bertha Emma Beetz, 87, of Dillsboro, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2006 at St. Elizabeth South in Cross Plains, KY.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Ulrich Filter Funeral Home in Dillsboro.

Evelyn Louise Siegel
Evelyn Louise Siegel, 84, of Greendale, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at Morgan County Medical Center, Martinsville. She was born August 13, 1921 in Aurora, the daughter of George Campbell and Elizabeth Fisk, and they preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughter Sue Ruddell of Martinsville; sisters Melba Campbell of Indianapolis; Mary Tobias of Deerfield Beach, FL; Peggy Sanford of West Chester, OH; and Rita Cunningham of Lawrenceburg; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Siegel retired in 1989 from Seagram’s. She was a registered nurse. She was a member of the Lawrenceburg American Legion Post Auxiliary.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 28 at the Filter Funeral Home in Aurora. Burial will be at the Riverview Cemetery, Aurora.
Memorials may be given to the American Legion Auxiliary.

Gusta Irene Spillman
Gusta Irene Spillman, 90, of Osgood, passed away Friday, January 27, 2006 at her residence. She was born October 16, 1915 in Brown County, the daughter of Franklin and Laura Fleener Swisher, and they preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons Paul of Montgomery, TX and Robert of Bedford; daughter Connie Fagan of Osgood; 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by son Richard; brothers Erwin and Lee Swisher; and sister Mamie Swisher.
Mrs. Spillman had worked for RCA in Bloomington and the Ramada Inn in Nashville.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 30 at the Brown County Community Church in Helmsburg. Burial was at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Greenwood.
Memorials may be given to Margaret Mary Hospice in care of the funeral home.

Jean Henderson Stevens, 81, of Decatur, formerly of Versailles, died January 30, 2006 at Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born February 24, 1924 in Holton.

Jonathon Edward Vierling
Jonathon Edward Vierling, 19, of Sunman, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2006 at his residence. He was born May 22, 1986 in Indianapolis, the son of Melissa Vierling and Jonathan Dean Spurlock.
Survivors include his mother Melissa Spurlock; sisters Heaven Leigh Sky and Destiney Angel; brother Silas Dean; grandparents Debra and John Vierling of Batesville and Delores Adams of Batesville; great-grandmother Alma Vierling of Batesville; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by father Jonathan Dean Spurlock; grandparents Silas and Cetrena Spurlock; great-grandparents Gilbert and Caroline Wagner and Gilbert Edward Vierling.
Mr. Vierling was a 2005 graduate of East Central High School and a student at Ivy Tech in Batesville. He worked at Time Out Restaurant & Sport Lounge in Batesville. He was a former member of the FFA.
Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, January 31 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cook Funeral Home, 107 Vine Street, Sunman. Burial will be at the Pilgrim Home Cemetery.

June “June Bug” Creech Blaylock
June “June Bug” Creech Blaylock, 31, of Dupont, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at the Inpatient Facility of Hospice of South Central Indiana, Columbus. She was born December 9, 1974 in Scottsburg, the daughter of Jay and Waveleen Anderson Creech McVey and they survive. She married Brian Blaylock of Dupont on August 28, 1999 and he survives.
Survivors also include son Clayton Lawrence “Gump”; stepmother Helen Creech of Lancaster; stepfather Johnny McVey of Dupont; sister Gwendolyn and husband Scotty Reed of Dupont; brother Michael and wife Sherry of Dupont; stepsisters Julie Scott of Madison; Tammy and husband Brian Cox of Lancaster; stepbrothers Tommy Sedam of Dupont; Travis McVey of McMinnville, TN; Brent and wife Tracie McVey of Scottsburg; grandparents Ara and Dewey Campbell of Austin; step-grandmother June Pearl Anderson of Austin; father-in-law and mother-in-law William and Judy Blaylock of Deputy; and several other relatives.
She was preceded in death by brother Freddy Elijah Creech; grandparents Fred Anderson; Elijah and Norah Creech; and step-grandparents Ira and Agnes Loveall and Delmer “Scotty” Scott.
Mrs. Blaylock was a 1993 graduate of Madison Consolidated High School and attended Vincennes University. In 1980, she was named “Little Miss Regatta” and was second runner-up in 1982. She was employed with Valleo-Sylvania Company in Seymour. She volunteered at the Deputy Volunteer Fire Department.
Funeral services were Sunday, January 29 at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison with Rev. Mike Shuler officiating. Burial was at the Dupont Cemetery.

Mary Scruggs Self
Mary Scruggs Self, 83, of Cincinnati, OH, formerly of East Enterprise, passed away Monday, January 30, 2006 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, OH. She was born May 29, 1922 in Ft. Pierce, FL, the daughter of Charles Moore and Laura Moore Schafer, and they preceded her in death. She married Major Charles M. Self (ret.) of Cincinnati, OH on April 11, 1952 in Camden, GA, and he survives.
Survivors also include daughter Karen Elizabeth and husband Kenny Cowden of Cincinnati, OH; son Charles Arthur and wife Vicki Self of West Chester, OH; brother John and wife Joyce Moore of Dallas, TX; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by foster mother Pearl Dickens Scruggs and stepfather Arthur Schafer.
Mrs. Self was a graduate of Lockland High School in Nashville, TN. She had worked as a product demonstrator at grocery stores in Southeastern Indiana. She volunteered at the P.W. Lewis Center and for the Boy Scouts of America. She was a member of the Pvt. Charles Richard Gailey VFW Post 7340 Auxiliary, the East Enterprise Homemaker’s Club and a former member of the East Enterprise United Methodist Church. Mrs. Self was a current member of the Mt. Airy United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be Wednesday, February 1 from 5-8:30 p.m. and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 2 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mt. Airy United Methodist Church, 2659 North Bend Road, Cincinnati, OH with Rev. David R. Gerber and Rev. John Scudder officiating. Burial will be at Arlington Memorial Gardens, Cincinnati, OH.

Clarence Edwin Adams
Clarence Edwin Adams, 75, of Lawrenceburg and formerly of Madison passed away Saturday, January 21, 2006 at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, OH. He was born August 10, 1930 in Versailles, the son of Clarence and Jeanette Farrell Adams, both deceased.
Survivors include sons Douglas and wife Meg of Memphis, TN and Keith and wife Angie of Hanover; granddaughters Brittany Adams and Jessi Dawson; brothers Don and wife Edie of Bedford, KY and Kenny and wife Dorothy of Versailles.
He was preceded in death by former wife Sandra Adams and nephew Michael Shepherd.
Mr. Adams was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Korean War. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, China Service Medal and National Defense Medal. He was a retired sales representative of Bankers Life Insurance.
Visitation will be today, Tuesday, January 24 from 5-8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, January 25 from 9:00 a.m till time of services at the Vail-Holt Funeral Home, Madison. Services will be held Wednesday, January 25 at 11:00 a.m. at the Vail-Holt Funeral Home Madison Chapel with Pastor Jeff Jones officiating. Burial will be at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery with full military graveside services conducted by the Honor Guard of American Legion #9.

David Thompson, Jr.
David Thompson, Jr., 80, of Batesville passed away Saturday, January 21, 2006 at The Waters of Batesville. He was born August 14, 1925 in Ashland, KY, the son of David, Sr. and Ethel Erwin Thompson, both deceased. He married Verta Frost in January 1950, and she preceded him in death on April 18, 2000.
Survivors include sons Andrew of Knoxville, TN; and Martin of Indianapolis; daughter Carol Bessler of Batesville; four grandchildren; and sister Mary Dixon of Ashland.
He was preceded in death by sister Lena Allen and two grandsons.
Mr. Thompson was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in WWII. He was a former employee of Hillenbrand Industries and a landlord, owning various rental properties. He was a member of the Ripley County VFW Post #3183.
Visitation will be today, Tuesday, January 24 from 9-11:00 a.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, 151 W. George Street, Batesville. Services are today, Tuesday, January 24 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Charles Flory officiating. Burial will be at Stumpke’s Corner.

Michael C. Kolbinsky
Michael C. Kolbinsky, 55, of Milan passed away Monday, January 23, 2006 at Margaret Mary Community Hospital, Batesville. He was born February 18, 1950 in Cincinnati, OH, the son of Lester and Janet Noth Kolbinsky. He married Judith Gleason on November 3, 1990 and she survives.
Survivors also include son Michael of Milan; daughters Tricia and husband Andy Wade of Birmingham, AL; and Renee and husband David Bubbly of Burlington, KY; brothers Mark and wife Janet of Milan; and, Scott and wife Jackie of Lawrenceburg; sister Lisa Kolbinsky of West Harrison and grandson James Bubbly.
Mr. Kolbinsky was a construction worker and a member of Laborers Union #265.

William K. Boyle
William K. Boyle, 73, of Milan passed away Friday, January 20, 2006 at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, OH. He was born November 1, 1932 in Dover, NH, the son of Raymond and Margaret Robichaud Boyle, both deceased. He married Lorina Adair on February 2, 1954 and she survives.
Survivors also include sons Ronald and Steven of Tewksbury, MA; William of Elkon, MD; David of Nashaua, NH and Jeffrey of Chelmsfold, MA; brother Raymond of Milan; sister Patricia Oloughlin of Norwell, MA; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Boyle served in the U.S. Army during the Korea and Vietnam eras. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

Betty J. Stutler, 75, of Milan, passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at her residence. She was born January 8, 1931 at Batesville, the daughter of Frank and Hazel Caplinger Smith, both deceased. She married Merle E. Stutler on December 23, 1950, and he preceded her in death on June 28, 1990.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Mike and Edelgard of Greenwood; Tony and Judy of Milan; Jerry and Connie of Dillsboro and Terry of St. Petersburg, FL; daughters and sons-in-law Gail and Kenneth Knowlton of Milan; Diane and Lonnie Reynolds of Versailles; Kim and Aaron Reynolds of Oldenburg; brothers Richard Smith of Westport; Dale Smith of Springhill, FL; Jack Smith of Versailles; Alec Smith of Milan; sister Kay Russell of Moores Hill; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Breauna Gail “Bree Bree” Edwards, 10, of Madison, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2006 at her residence. She was born September 15, 1995 in Madison to Ellis Edwards, Jr. and Angela Walker Edwards, and they survive.
Survivors also include brother Aaron Joel; paternal grandparents Pastor Wayne, Sr. and Donna Edwards of Brownstown; maternal grandparents Benny and Linda Walker of Rising Sun; uncles and aunts Mike and Marla of East Enterprise; Darin and Karen of Madison; Brandon and Christy Sargent of Seymour; Ben and Shelley Walker of Columbus; David and Terri Lammers of Cincinnati; and Randy and Stephanie Scott of Rising Sun; special caregiver Ange Horner of Madison; and several great uncles, great aunts, cousins, friends and caregivers.

“ Bree Bree” was currently in the fourth grade at Ryker’s Ridge Elementary. At age three, she was awarded a special bronze medal for her efforts in Conductive Ed. She was a member of North Madison Christian Church. In 2000, “Bree Bree” was awarded a trip to Disney World by the Dream Factory.

Delores C. “Dee” Grottke Bennett, 82, of Madison, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2006 at King’s Daughters’ Hospital, Madison. She was born January 4, 1924 in Dayton, OH, the daughter of John, Sr. and Rose Gershpacher Grottke, both deceased.
Survivors include sons Dan Bodine and companion Evelyn of Richmond, KY; and Ed and wife Mary Ann Bennett of Hanover; daughter Patricia Hampson of Hanover; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by sisters Eleanor Hasting and Rosie Riegelspeger and brother-in-law Butch Riegelspeger.
Mrs. Bennett was a graduate of Julianne Catholic School in Dayton, OH. Bennett had been a waitress in the Dayton area for many years, then co-owned and managed Shipley’s Tavern in Madison. She was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Madison.

Doris M. Cook, 81, of Columbus, formerly of Batesville, passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at Columbus Regional Hospital. She was born March 27, 1924 in Covington, KY, the daughter of Arvey and Louise Webster, both deceased. She married Donald Cook, and he preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons Ivan and Glenn Childress; daughters Donna Murss; Leah Childress-LaFauci and Bobbi Hammond.
Mrs. Cook was retired from Hill-Rom.

Edith Lemen
Edith Lemen, 84, of Benham passed away Saturday, January 14, 2006 at the Swiss Villa in Vevay. She was born near Canaan on March 20, 1921 the daughter of James and Ella Mae Wilson Lanham. She was married to Preston Lemen on November 15, 1941 and he preceded her in death on March 19, 1999.
Survivors include one daughter Deanna Wooley and her husband Ross of Madison; grandchildren Steve Wooley and his wife Jennifer of Indianapolis, Patrick Wooley of Madison, and Dena Hearn and her husband Tom of Covington; two great-grandchildren Madeline Hearn and Lana Wooley; one brother James Lanham of Madison; sisters Bessie Schutte of Delaware and Marie Black of Madison; niece Lela Brindley of Vevay along with several other nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law Clovis Lemen of Benham.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, her son Dennis, sisters Opal Hines and Elsie Sampson, her brother Thurman Lanham, and her nephew Jimmy Schutte.
Mrs. Lemen was a 1940 graduate of Central High School in Madison and she was a homemaker. She was a member of the former Hicks Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 20 at 11:00 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Bro. Randy Thieman officiating. Burial will be in the Benham Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, January 19 from 5-8:00 p.m.

Edward E. “Eddie” Klopp
Edward E. “Eddie” Klopp, 81, of Madison, passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at Norton Hospital, Louisville, KY. He was born September 5, 1924 in Petersburg, KY, the son of Ruthford and Thelma Lyon Klopp, both deceased. He married Lue Leming Klopp on November 2, 1946 in Madison, and she survives.
Survivors also include daughters and sons-in-law Tanya and John Kelley of Hanover; Tara and John Hamilton and Elyse and Ronnie Taylor of Madison; brothers Frank L. “Dickie” of Madison; and David “Deacon” and wife Lois Mantesa, CA; sisters Helen “Muff” Lindsay of Georgetown, KY; Jean “Hope” Henry of Warsaw, KY; Mary Faith “Fadie” Seaver, Kathleen Chambers and Nell Gaye “Brownie” Rippe of Madison; Judy and husband Shafe Boles of Vevay; sister-in-law Evelyn Drewry of Florida; brother-in-law Dwight Stoffer of Dupont; grandchildren Brent and Alicia Hamilton; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by sister Virginia “Jenna” Bersch; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Wanda B. Klopp; Dolly Stoffer; Vincent Drewry; Sue and Nathan Mayfield; Sig Rippe; Burton Chambers; Melvin Henry and Norman Seaver.
Mr. Klopp was a 1942 graduate of Madison High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon and Good Conduct Ribbon. He rejoined the U.S. Navy in 1951 and served during the Korean War. Mr. Klopp retired in 1982 from the Indiana Kentucky Electric Company. He was a 50-year member of the Union Lodge #2 F&AM, member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, and Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
Masonic services were performed at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Home on Thursday, January 12, 2006, by Union Lodge #2 F&AM. Funeral services were Friday, January 13 at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison with Pastor Jon Pearce officiating.00 Burial was at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Madison with full military graveside rites performed by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion.

Edwin Tad Lainhart
Edwin Tad Lainhart, 89, of Holton passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at his residence. He was born at Covell, IL, on April 20, 1916 the son of Sanford and Martha Begley Lainhart, both deceased. He married Myrtle Sizemore on February 13, 1940 and she survives.
Survivors also include son Edwin Tad Lainhart, Jr. and wife Sherrie of Erlanger, KY; daughter Patti Jo Hunyadi and husband Mike of New Paris, OH; grandchildren Bill Lainhart of Litchfield, KY; Sherran Schatzman and Tyra Jo Lainhart of Erlanger; Vanessa DeBoo of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, and Amanda Hunyadi of Franklin; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers Eddie Lainhart of Yellow Springs, OH; David and Keith both of Springboro, OH; sisters Gladys McDougal of St. Petersburg, FL and Roselyn Mitakidus of Springboro, OH.
He was preceded in death by sister Elsie Case.
Mr. Lainhart grew up and attended school in McKee, KY. He also attended Eastern Kentucky University. He served in the 82nd Airborne during WWII as a medic with the 325th Glider Infantry. He served in the European Theater and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was also a farmer and owned and operated Tad’s Bargain Farm at the east edge of Holton for several years. Known to many as “Brother Tad” he could be found at any one of numerous churches, singing, playing guitar, and giving his testimony. He attended the Hiway Holiness Church near Butlerville and also shared God’s love through his ministry to the elderly.
Funeral services were Sunday, January 15 at the Hiway Holiness Church with Pastor Claude Fouts officiating. Burial was in the Holton Cemetery.

Elma Collins
Elma Collins, 77, of Sunman, passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at Margaret Mary Community Hospital, Batesville. She was born May 30, 1928 in Viper, KY, the daughter of Harrison and Tisha Sexton Adams, both deceased. She married Vernon Collins, and he preceded her in death on March 23, 1999.
Survivors include son Hugh and wife Katy Adams of Milan; sister Tawonna Adams of Kentucky; brothers Albert Adams of Napoleon and Harrison Adams, Jr. of Sunman; granddaughters Jody and husband Tony Lee and Katrina and husband Paul Yatsko of Milan and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by several sisters and brothers.
Mrs. Collins was a homemaker.
Funeral services were Sunday, January 15, at Cook Funeral Home in Sunman with Rev. Buddy Collins officiating. Burial was in the Little Memory Church Cemetery.

Evelyn R. Gray
Evelyn R. Gray, 85, of Olean passed away Friday, January 13, 2006 at the Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg. She was born near Friendship on April 1, 1920 the daughter of Noel and Ruth Liggett Lane, both deceased. She was married to Gilbert Gray on October 23, 1935 and he preceded her in death on September 21, 1989.
Survivors include four sons, Glen of Lawrenceburg; Robert and wife Linda of Versailles; John of Osgood; and Ronnie and wife Linda of Farmers Retreat; three daughters Wanda Hooton and husband Duane of Leigh Acres, FL; Janice Linkmeyer and husband Wayne of Versailles; and Hope Gray of Olean; 27 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by sons Gary and Gene; grandsons Brian Gray, Kenny Simmons, and Randall Wayne Scott; one brother and one sister.
Mrs. Gray was a homemaker and had worked with her husband at the Ripley County Farm Bureau mill at Cross Plains. She was a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church in Friendship and was also a member of the Friendship Social Circle. She was a former leader for the Friendly 4-Her’s Club in Brown Township.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 18 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bear Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Sherman Hughes and Rev. Irmal Elliott officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8:00 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles, and from 10:00 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the church.

Inez H. Alexander
Inez H. Alexander, 90, of Columbus passed away Friday, January 13, 2006 at the Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus. She was born in the Malotte neighborhood near Versailles on March 18, 1915 the daughter of Jacob and Mary Ann Alfrey Snedaker. She was married to John G. Alexander and he preceded her in death in 1995.
Survivors include one daughter Maryann Traut of Columbus; grandsons Gregory L. Brodnik and wife Carrie of Greenwood and Terrence Brodnik of Indianapolis; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by son Dr. John J. Alexander; sisters Virginia May and Emily Ruth Herrick; and brother Harold Snedaker.
Mrs. Alexander was a 1932 graduate of New Marion High School and a 1933 graduate of Central Normal Teachers College in Danville. She later received her bachelors degree from Butler University. She had taught school in New Marion and ended her teaching career in the Wayne Township School District in Indianapolis.
Funeral services were Monday, January 16 at the Shelby Christian Church near Versailles.

James Robert “Jim” Pettit
James Robert “Jim” Pettit, 63, of Leitchfield, KY, formerly of New Haven, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2006 at his residence. He was born June 8, 1942 in Cross Plains, the son of Melvin Pettit and Doris Woods Pettit Scott, both deceased. He married Marinda Back Pettit of Leitchfield, KY and she survives.
Survivors also include daughters Roberta Peterson and Opal Stiltz of Versailles; Sharon Griggs and Tammy Acre of Leitchfield, KY; brothers Melvin of Cleveland, OH and David of Versailles; sisters Eva Champ and Dorothy Wissel of Versailles; 24 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by granddaughter Kimberly Jo Estell.
Mr. Pettit was a retired self-employed contractor. He was a member of The Little Mission Baptist Church in Icetown, KY.
Funeral services were Sunday, January 15, 2006 at the William R. Rust Funeral Home, New Haven, KY with Rev. Jewell Cundiff and Rev. Warren Traylor officiating. Burial was in the Marshall Family Cemetery in Culvertown, KY. Memorial services will be at the Washington Baptist Church in Elrod on Saturday, January 21 at 10:00 a.m.

Joyce Jean Borgman
Joyce Jean Borgman, 67, of Morris, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2006 at her home. She was born June 26, 1938 in Batesville, the daughter of Alvin and Helen Reister Schutte, both deceased. She married Ron Borgman on July 28, 1956 at the St. Louis Catholic Church in Batesville, and he survives.
Survivors also include daughters Vicki Lawrence of Batesville, Valerie Brown of West Chester, OH; and Trina Huber of Sunman; sons David of Batesville and Darrell of Morris; sister Becky Rosemeyer of St. Petersburg, FL; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sister Golda Fasbinder.
Mrs. Borgman had worked for Dr. Datta and was a nurse’s aide in the emergency room at Decatur County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg.
Funeral services are today, Tuesday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church Crossroads in Batesville with Pastor Robin Owen officiating. Burial will be in the St. Louis Catholic Church Cemetery.

Leah Marie Laswell
Leah Marie Laswell, 102, of Osgood, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2006 at Margaret Mary Community Hospital, Batesville. She was born June 21, 1903 in Osgood, the daughter of John Peter and Anna Poppenhause Meyer, both deceased. She married Charles A. Laswell in 1927 and he preceded her in death in 1965.
Survivors include son James of Arlington, TX; daughter Rose Marie Chestnut of Orlando, FL; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sons Charles and John, and brother Robert J. Meyer.
Mrs. Laswell taught school for 38 years. She was a member of the Osgood United Methodist Church, Ripley County Retired Teachers Association and the XYZ Senior Citizen Club. Mrs. Laswell was a past member of the Directors of the Osgood Public Library, the Entre Nous Federated Club and the Ripley County Historical Society. She had worked for the Hoosier Arts & Crafts Center and volunteered at the Manderley Health Care Center.
Visitation is Wednesday, January 18 from 5-7:00 p.m. at Neal’s Funeral Home, 306 S. Walnut Street, Osgood. Funeral services will be Thursday, January 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the Osgood United Methodist Church. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery “Finks,” Osgood.

Lynn Lostutter, 79, of St. Petersburg, FL passed away Sunday, January 15 in St. Petersburg.

Myrtle Coomer Hughes
Myrtle Coomer Hughes, 84, of Lexington, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2006 at Thornton Terrace Health Campus, Hanover. She was born June 16, 1921 in Taulbee, KY, the daughter of Willie and Lillie Taulbee Coomer, both deceased. She married William “Bill” Hughes on December 5, 1959, and he preceded her in death on November 28, 1980.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Larry and Teresa Hughes of Lexington; two grandchildren Billy Hughes and fiancÈe Tera; Beth and husband Trevor Jones; several cousins and other relatives.
Mrs. Hughes worked at Wright’s Air Force Base, and later at RCA in Cincinnati. She was a former member of the Open Door Baptist Church in Deputy, and a current member of the New Hope Baptist Church near Chelsea.
Funeral services were Monday, January 16 at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Burial was at St. Patricks Cemetery, Madison.

Rene Kay Holman
Rene Kay Holman, 56, of New Marion passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison. She was born at Osgood on March 24, 1949 the daughter of William and Geneva Burton Kendall. She was married to Lester Holman on June 24, 1970 and he survives.
Other survivors include son David and wife Shannon of Madison; six grandchildren; brother Ray Doyle of Florida; and sister Rosella Hardy of Osgood.
She was preceded in death by her stepfather Alma Doyle and sister Tamar Doyle.
Mrs. Holman was a 1967 graduate of Jac-Cen-Del High School and was a member of the West Fork Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and a former employee of Hanover College, Madison Wal-Mart, and Clifty Inn.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 14 at the West Fork Baptist Church near Rexville with Rev. David Blazier officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Williams

Rev. Walter C. Williams, 92, of Versailles, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2006 at the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison. He was born at Sullivan on July 21, 1913 the son of Bert and Grace Turner Williams, both deceased. He was married to Helen Maxine Walters on October 5, 1935 and she preceded him in death on June 18, 1991.
Survivors include son Larry and wife Marilyn of Beech Grove; daughters Judy Hill and husband Elden of Joes, CO; Jane Williams of Versailles; grandchildren Rebecca Jane Hill and husband Brennan Peterson of Portland, OR; and Gregory Walter Hill and wife Maureen Hearty of Denver, CO; and sister-in-law Lena Dyer of Cory.
He was preceded in death by grandchildren Craig Williams and Thomas R. Hill; sisters Nellie McCammon and Faye Zaayer; and brother Ralph Williams.
Rev. Williams was a 1931 graduate of Union High School at Dugger. He was a retired United Methodist minister having served Indiana congregations in Alfordsville, Alford, Asbury Chapel near Bicknell, Riley, Winslow, Newtown, and retired from the Milan United Methodist Church in 1978. He was a member of the Tyson United Methodist Church, South Indiana United Methodist Conference, Versailles Lions Club, and the South Ripley Ministerial Association. He was a former director of the Ripley County Cancer Unit and the Versailles Senior Citizen Center.
Funeral services were Monday, January 16 at the Tyson United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Hendrix and Pastor Marcus Felde officiating. Burial will be today, Tuesday, January 17 at 12:30 p.m. at the Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan.

Ruth Demaree Mendenhall
Ruth Demaree Mendenhall, 77, of Nevada, MO, formerly of New Marion, passed away in Missouri. She was born in New Marion on January 14, 1928 the daughter of James and Geneva Demaree. She married Ben Mendenhall and he survives.
Survivors also include daughter and son-in-law Susan and Bob Longmire, and Grandson Alex; brothers Robert Demaree of Satellite Beach, FL; Merrill Demaree of Indianapolis; sisters Evelyn Strubbe and Carol Evans of New Marion; and sister-in-law Joann Jenkins of Nevada, MO.
She was preceded in death by sisters Leah Panarisi and Leona Demaree.
Mrs. Mendenhall left Indiana to join the aviation industry in its formative years, working in communications for Howard Hughes’ Trans World Airlines in Kansas City. After marriage, she and her husband then built a Chiropractic practice together in Nevada, MO. Mrs. Mendenhall served as president of the Nevada School Board, on the Vernon County Ambulance Board, Nevada R-5 Board, was a Girl Scout Leader in the Ozark Area Girl Scout Council, establishing member of the Board of Directors of Moss House and the Nevada R-5 Scholarship Committee.
A celebration of her life was held Saturday, January 14, 2006 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada, MO. Burial was at Newton Burial Park.
Memorials may be given to the Moss House or a Ruth Mendenhall Scholarship fund for NHS students, or the Vernon County Humane Society in care of the funeral home.

Wilbur C. Jones
Wilbur C. Jones, 90, of Madison, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2006 at Thornton Terrace Health Campus, Hanover. He was born April 18, 1915 in Trimble County, KY, the son of Jesse Jackson and Effie King Jones, both deceased. He married Dorothy G. Aldridge Handlon of Madison and she survives.
Survivors also include son and daughter-in-law David Lee and Penny Jones of Madison; stepdaughters Patricia Ann Stockdale and Dinah Handlon of Madison; brothers and sisters-in-law Howard and Clara Bell, and Clarence and Evelyn of Madison; sisters Verna Finke of Madison and Eula Wheeler of Hanover; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by first wife Lois Gray Jones; son Stephen; daughter-in-law Sue Ellen; sister Glenna Taylor and brothers, Ernest and Virgil.
Mr. Jones was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon, three Bronze Stars, the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon and the WWII Victory Medal. He was employed for 32 years at the Jefferson Proving Grounds, spending 20 years as a firefighter and retiring in 1974. He also worked at Lodge Brothers Furniture in Madison. He was a member of the FOP, Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion and Madison VFW Post 1969. Jones was a member of the First Baptist Church and served as a deacon.
Visitation is today, Tuesday, January 17 from 5-8:00 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive, Madison and Wednesday, January 18 from 1:00 p.m. until time of funeral services. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 18 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 416 Vine Street, Madison. Burial will be at the Springdale Cemetery in Madison.

Charles Ray Snelling
Charles Ray Snelling, 77, of Dillsboro, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2006 at Dearborn County Hospital, Lawrenceburg. He was born September 23, 1928 in Petersburg, KY, the son of Otto and Carrie Harrington Snelling, both deceased.
Survivors include sons Charles A. Elliott and Lowell F. Coleman; brother Eugene Snelling; sisters Marjorie Oakley of Dillsboro and Francis Rodgers; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers Otto, Jr., Elmer and William “Dude” Snelling.
Mr. Snelling was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1945-1959. He was a former employee of the U.S. Post Office.
Funeral services were Saturday, January 7 at Ulrich Filter Funeral Home, Dillsboro. Burial was at the Oakdale Cemetery, Dillsboro.

Fred L. Tucker
Fred L. Tucker, 62, of Milan, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2006 at his residence. He was born April 10, 1943 at Bedford, the son of Vernon and Eloise Laws Tucker, both deceased. He married Letitia Justice on June 26, 1964 and she survives.
Other survivors include son Matthew and wife Amy Tucker of Provo, UT, and grandchildren Rachael and Brinley Tucker.
He was preceded in death by son Mark Tucker.
Mr. Tucker was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Cuban missile crisis. He owned and operated F.L. Tucker Hardware and Lumber Company and Tucker Custom Woodworking in Sunman. Mr. Tucker was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Milan F&AM #31, and the Milan American Legion Post #235.
Funeral services were Friday, January 6 at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home in Milan with Bishop Pete Watkins officiating, and Masonic rites. Burial was at the Craven Cemetery, Milan, with graveside military rites performed by the Milan Legion Post #235.

James C. Tekulve
James C. Tekulve, 50, of Batesville, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2006 at Margaret Mary Community Hospital, Batesville. He was born March 1, 1955 in Batesville, the son of Robert and Edna Prakel Tekulve, both deceased. He married Susan Raab on December 26, 1992 and she survives.
Survivors also include sons Eric and Nick; daughter Becky; brothers Steve Spencer and Bill Tekulve of Batesville; Bob of Steamboat, CO; and Jon of Milan; sister Bev Wehr of Pekin, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Tekulve was an Assistant Foreman for Med-Mizer, Inc. in Batesville. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and Buckmasters.
Funeral services will be Wed-nesday, January 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, 151 W. George St., Batesville, with Rev. Daniel Mahan officiating.

Janett King
Janett King, 62, of Moores Hill, passed away Friday, January 6, 2006 at Dearborn County Hospital, Lawrenceburg. She was born July 25, 1943 at New Miami, OH, the daughter of Craig Estelle and Sarah Tamar Clark Steele, both deceased. She married James King of Moores Hill on May 6, 1963 and he survives.
Survivors also include daughters Jamie Clark of Cincinnati, OH; Melinda King and Corrinea Smith of Moores Hill; brother Curtis Steele of Osford, OH; sisters Joyce Black of Florida; Joan Armstrong, Trenton OH; June Hutslar of Bloomington; and Judy Freeman of Drexler, MO; and, six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sister Betty Gabbard; and brothers Joe and Kenneth Steele.
Mrs. King was a homemaker and a member of the Moores Hill Church of Christ.
Funeral services will be Wed-nesday, January 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the Moores Hill Church of Christ with Rex Dunning officiating.

Kayden Lynn Starrett
Kayden Lynn Starrett, of Madison, died at birth Thursday, January 5, 2006 at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison. She is survived by her parents, Adam Joseph Starrett and Jessica Lynn Gilstrap.
Other survivors include brother Joseph Brice of Madison; grandparents Susan Liter and Michael Montgomery of Madison Lanna and David McDarment of Madison; Jeff Gilstrap of Madison; and William Starrett of Mississippi; great-grandparents Paula and Glenn Murphy of Madison; Anna Perkinson of North Vernon; and Ron and Donna Perkinson of Madison; great-great grandparents Gladys Goldman of Salem; Amanda Horn of Versailles; and Darrell and Helen Liter of Lexington; several aunts, uncles, great-aunts and uncles, cousins and other relatives.

Marie Scoopmire
Marie Scoopmire, 101, of Seymour, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2006 at the Lutheran Community Home in Seymour. She was born April 6, 1904 in Lawrence County, the daughter of Alfred Sherman and Phoebe Dodds Lee, both deceased. She married Thomas Reed Scoopmire on April 28, 1928 in Bedford, and he preceded her in death.
Survivors include son Thomas and wife Betty Scoopmire of Greenville, NC; grandson Sean and wife Meg Scoopmire of Greenville, SC; two nieces and three nephews.
She was preceded in death by brothers Ross, Melvin and Charles Lee; sisters Ina Baker and Annetta Nicholson.
Mrs. Scoopmire was a graduate of Butler University. She taught school in Harrison, Lawrenceburg and Aurora, retiring in 1963. She was a member of CCC Class, a Sunday School teacher, and held various offices in CWF in the Central Christian Church. Mrs. Scoopmire also was a member of the Seymour Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired Railroaders, the Seymour Republican Women’s Club and a 75-year member of Eastern Star.
Visitation will be today, Tuesday, January 10 from 3-6:00 p.m. at Voss Chapel, 316 N. Chestnut St., Seymour with Eastern Star Memorial Service at 5:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 11 at 10:00 a.m. at Voss Chapel with Rev. Sam Davenport officiating. Private burial will be at the Proctor Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Central Christian Church building fund.

Melba Jean “Bobbie” Myers
Melba Jean “Bobbie” Myers, 80, of Aurora, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2006 at the Shady Nook Care Center, Lawrenceburg. She was born January 25, 1925 in Aurora, the daughter of Harry and Wilma Caseldine Trester, both deceased. She married Robert F. Myers of Aurora and he survives.
Other survivors include daughters Martha Block of Aurora and Diane Goodwin; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brother Harry Trester Leland and grandchild Matthew Goodwin.
Mrs. Myers was a homemaker. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #231 in Aurora for 59 years.
Funeral services were Monday, January 9 at the Filter Funeral Home in Aurora. Burial was at the Riverview Cemetery, Aurora.

William Abplanalp
William Abplanalp, 19, of Versailles, passed away Sunday, January 8, 2006 at the Manderley Health Care Center, Osgood. He was born at Sheboygan, Wisconsin on January 11, 1986 the son of Stephen and Debra Gotchy Abplanalp.
Survivors include his father Stephen Abplanalp of New Point; his mother Debra Abplanalp of Versailles; sister Victoria Abplanalp of Louisville; paternal grandfather Stephen Abplanalp of Columbus; and maternal grandfather Richard Gotchy of Sheboygan Falls, WI.
William was a 2003 graduate of South Ripley High School where he participated in FFA. He was also a member of Boy Scout Troop #607 in Versailles and was a former employee of the Versailles Super-Valu.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 11 at 11:00 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor Tim Marshall and Pastor Jamin Tuttle officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-8:00 p.m.
Memorials may be given to the Point of Grace Church or the Jennings County Hospice in care of the funeral home.

Elmer C. Browder
Elmer C. Browder, 90, of Batesville, died Thursday, December 29, 2005 at Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born July 20, 1915 in Switchback, WV the son of William Jessie and Martha (Lovell) Browder, both deceased. He married Martha Harmon and she preceded him in death on December 14, 1982.
Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia Majors of Batesville; three sons, John Browder of Culver, Ron Belter of Rushville, William Browder of Napoleon; two sisters, Mary Tabor of Sunman, Hazel Walch of Evansville; two brothers, Clarence Browder of Florida, Dave Browder of Evansville; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bert and Daniel Browder.
Mr. Browder was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII.
