Fern Estelle Combs Lewis
Fern Estelle Combs Lewis, 84, of Encino, CA, formerly of Milan, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2007, peacefully at home. She was born at Dwarf, KY, the youngest child of Cornelius and Mary Engle Combs.
Mrs. Lewis graduated from Milan High School in 1939 and went on to earn her R.N. degree from the Christ Hospital School of Nursing, Cincinnati, OH in 1943. She enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in England during WWII. She married John D. Lewis on November 18, 1945. Mrs. Lewis moved to Lake Charles, LA, where she resided until moving to California in 1985. She continued her career in nursing, serving as Director of Nursing at South Cameron (LA) Memorial Hospital and as an R.N. at St. Mary’s Hospital of Long Beach, CA. She retired in 1995.
Survivors include daughter Martha Lewis of Encino, CA and son Chris Lewis and wife Annette of Burbank, CA.; sister-in-law Eva Combs of Milan.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 31 at 11:00 a.m. at the Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home in Milan with Pastor Harris Long officiating. Burial will be in the Old Craven Cemetery in Milan with graveside military services provided by the Milan Legion Post #235.
Memorials may be given to the ASPCA or the Humane Society.


Carol "Carrie" Jean Meyer
Carol "Carrie" Jean Meyer, 75, of Napoleon, passed away Friday, March 23, 2007 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. She was born September 6, 1931 the daughter of Wiley and Mildred Kramer Howe, both deceased. She married Donald Meyer on November 16, 1950 and he sur-vives.
Other survivors include son Michael and wife Shirley of Napoleon, granddaughter Amy and husband William Ahaus of Napoleon, grandson Ian and wife Angela of Napoleon, and eleven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sisters Thelma Meister, Helen Messer and Jeri Messer.
Mrs. Meyer was a member of the St. Maurice Catholic Church in Napoleon.
Private family services will be held.
Neal’s Funeral Home in Osgood is in charge of the ar-rangements.

Lavonia R. Mead
Lavonia R. Mead, 91, of Aurora, passed away Monday, March 26, 2007 at the Dearborn County Hospital.
Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, March 29 at 11:00 a.m. at the Filter Funeral Home in Aurora. Burial will be in the Mt. Sinai Cemetery in Aurora.

Roy A. Richardson
Roy A. Richardson, 55, of Osgood passed away Monday, March 19, 2007 at the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.
He was born at Taylorsville in Spencer County, Kentucky on May 28, 1951 the son of Vernon and Rosa Ann Harley Richardson. He was married to Norma (Cathy) Hammons on April 22, 1982 and she survives.
Other survivors include one son Jason Allen Richardson of Rushville; one brother Bruce Richardson of Osgood, and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Lloyd.
Mr. Richardson was formerly employed with the Napoleon Lumber Company.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 24 at 11:00 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Russell Stephens officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Gardens near Madison. Visitation will be Friday from 5-8:00 p.m.

Sr. Florence Marie Rose O.S.F. died Saturday, March 17, 2007 at the Srs. of St. Francis Convent in Oldenburg.

Clara T. Heppner (nee: Gehring), 89, of Oldenburg, died Friday, March 16, 2007 in West Hills, California.
Visitation will be at the Daily Mass Chapel at Holy Family Church today, Thursday, March 22 from 4-8 p.m. with rosary services at 7 p.m. The funeral mass will be Friday, March 23 at 10 a.m. with burial in the church cemetery.

James Sloan
James Sloan, 75, of Osgood, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at his residence. He was born at Hindman, KY, on April 17, 1931 the son of Perry and Anna Collins Sloan, both deceased. He married Marian Faye Demaree on July 6, 1966 and she survives.
Survivors also include daughters Amy Sloan, Gayla McAlister and Penny and husband Charles Schornick all of Osgood; and Joy and husband Jerome Cole of Milan; sons Dan and wife Marie Halcomb of Osgood; Charles Halcomb of Indianapolis; and Jeffrey Sloan of Franklin, KY; sisters Bernalda Crowell of Napoleon; Zelma Grossman of Sunman; Ophelia Profitt of Ann Arbor, MI; Lorraine Gridley of Batesville; Henrietta Franklin of Versailles and Iona Sloan of Risney, KY; brothers Harold Sloan of Salem and Lowell Sloan of Rushville; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brother Elmer Sloan and sister Audrey Sloan.
Mr. Sloan worked with his family in the logging business. He attended the Little Memory Church near Sunman.
Visitation is today, Thursday, March 15 from 5-8:00 p.m. at Neal’s Funeral Home in Osgood. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 16 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Little Memory Cemetery, Sunman.

Margaret Herth
Margaret Herth, 77, of Milan, passed away Monday, March 12, 2007 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital, Batesville. She was born at Cincinnati, OH, on March 23, 1929 the daughter of Walter and Linnie Cundiff Lawhorn. She married Donald Leo Herth on September 20, 1974 and he preceded her in death on March 28, 2005.
Survivors include sons Donald Ray and wife Marsha Hood of Independence, KY, and Randy Hood of Milan; stepsons Patrick and wife Connie, Ted and wife Patty, and Paul Herth all of Cincinnati, OH; daughters Trudy Lilly of Milan; Rebecca Cornes and fiancée Chuck Stankus of Batavia, OH; and Jennifer and husband Darrell Burress of Milan; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by stepdaughter Elizabeth Ashcraft.
Mrs. Herth was a homemaker.
Visitation is Friday, March 16 from 10:00 a.m. - Noon at the Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home in Milan. Funeral services will immediately follow with Rev. Harris Long officiating. Burial will be in the New Craven Cemetery, Milan.

Denver Jewett

Denver Jewett, 53, of Dillsboro, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at the Mercy Franciscan Hospice, Cincinnati, OH. He was born at Milan on March 18, 1953 the son of Thomas and Dorothy Block Jewett and they survive.
Survivors also include son Shane and wife Dana Jewett of Moores Hill; brother Keith and wife Beth Jewett of Okeana, OH; sisters Karen and husband Gary Kirkpatrick of Lawrenceburg and Beth and husband Robert Strassell of Milan; and grandchildren Cory and Tristan Jewett.
Mr. Jewett served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He was a laborer. Mr. Jewett was a member of the Dillsboro American Legion.
Visitation is today, Thursday, March 15 from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Ulrich-Filter-DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 16 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oakdale Cemetery, Dillsboro.

Martha A. Bultman
Martha A. Bultman, 88, of Napoleon passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at the Hickory Creek Convalescent Center in Greensburg. She was born near Napoleon on May 10, 1918 the daughter of Daniel and Ida Strobel Engel. She was married to Woodrow Bultman on September 8, 1937 and he preceded her in death on November 1, 1991.
Survivors include two sons, Donald Bultman and his wife Karen of Greensburg and Terry Bultman and his wife Gwen of Bedford; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her daughter Nadine Strimple, her parents, her brothers Ralph, Roy, and Cloyd Engel, her sisters Louise Straber, Sara Grow, and Dorothy Bergman, and her great-grandson James Bultman.
Mrs. Bultman was a homemaker and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church at Napoleon where she was active in the Ladies Aid.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 17 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Gary Groth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.
Memorials may be given to the cemetery or the Napoleon Fire Department in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.

David N. Collins, 58, of Versailles, passed away Monday, March 5, 2007 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, OH. He was born December 19, 1948 at Cincinnati, OH, the son of Paul and Edna Wininger Collins.
Survivors include son Clinton of Hanover; daughter Jessica of Cincinnati, OH; brothers John of Holton and Richard of Seattle, WA; sisters Trudy Savage of Greendale; Margie Bleier of Erlanger, KY; Eileen Oliver of Tumwater, WA; Susan Walker of Versailles and Sally Brogan of Vevay; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brother Robert and sister Judi Adams.

Patricia Carol Detmer, 62, of Milan, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at her residence. She was born November 13, 1944 at Jacksboro, Tennessee, the daughter of Francis and Opal Hopper Kelley. She married Richard W. Detmer on June 27, 1963 and he survives.
Survivors also include sons Jeffrey and wife Sandy of Osgood and Jonathan of Ormond Beach, FL; daughter Julia and husband Gene Caldwell of Batesville; brother Dale Kelley of Port Tobacco, MD; and seven grandchildren.
Mrs. Detmer was a homemaker and a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church at Milan.
Visitation is today, Thursday, March 1 from 6-9:00 p.m. at the Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 2 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cornerstone Baptist Church, Milan, with Pastor Richard Mosley officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Moores Hill.
