JCD Eagle
JV shut out by SR Raiders in disgustingly frigid temperatures
Gary Franklin - Sports Editor
The South Ripley HS parking lot information board showed a
temp of 360, but with the driving wind penetrating the skin,
it seemed more like zero, yet the game played on
Umpires Jeremy Hughes behind the plate and father Paul Hughes
umping the bases definitely earned their pay calling the game
in the blistery cold.
The young men on the field acknowledged the harassing temps,
but continued as if it were the World Series.
The game score was 3-0, South Ripley, in the third inning
of play. As the game continued, the Raiders added runs.
During the fourth inning at bat, the Raiders began with a
lead off at bat by Zach Jines. Jines was hit by the pitch,
drawing a spot on first. Jines stole second as the delivery
of the second batter's pitch crossed the plate.
Brian Thomas singled to move Jines to third. With runners
on the corners, Andy Miller stepped up to bat. Miller singled,
driving in Jines and advancing Thomas. Thomas and Miller both
scored off a hit ending up at the base of the center field
fence stroke, off the bat of Thomas Welch. That took the Raider
lead to 6-0 after 4 innings.
Nick Grider again took the mound to face the Eagle lineup.
He and the Raider defense held the Eagles in the top of the
fifth
The Raider offense again went to work on Eagle pitcher Shane
Adams in the bottom of the fifth, rallying to end the game
by the 10 run rule after 5 innings by a score of 10-0.
The Raider JV is at home on Wednesday, April 11 against the
South Decatur Cougars with a 4:30 game time scheduled, and
the Eagle JV is set to travel to Rising Sun to face the Shiners
on Wednesday the 11th with the game beginning at 5 PM.
