Local men "reel in the cash"

Gary Franklin, Sports Editor

The local duo of Gary Byard and Merrill Bruce beat their nearest competitors in the recent bass tournmament by more than 3 pounds. Their 6-bass limit also included the biggest fish caught during the tournament.

Byard stated, "we had several other keeper bass, including a 5 lb. range lunker that managed to throw Merrill's bait."

Hoosier Open anglers continue to prove their superior angling skills with another awesome weigh-in at a time when stressed post-spawn bass can be hard to come by. The tournament anglers caught a total of 323 bass which were all returned to the water alive.
The tournament consisted of 107 teams. 91 teams caught the 323 bass weighing 772.05 lbs. for an average of 1.5 lbs. Of the 91 teams, 13 caught their 6 bass limit, 19 teams weighed in 5 bass.

The winning weight turned in by Bruce and Byard totaled 14.95 lbs., which included the biggest harvested in the tournament which topped the scales at 4 lb. 10 ozs. All fish were released alive. The total payout to 17 teams was $16,000. Of that purse, Byard and Bruce won $4,020 for 1st place and an additional $1,070 for the largest caught during the tournament for a grand total of $5.090.

The tournament's list of local team anglers also included Jeff Hafft and Mike Holman, Craig Demaree and Rick Hosmer, and Kenny Krall and Roger Miller. Jon Miller substituted for Kenny Krall during this tournament.

The 107 entries at $200 per team grossed $21,400. Gives a different perspective to "GONE FISHIN'."
