Eagles active with summer
league baseball
Gary Franklin - Sports Editor
In summarizing the Eagle summer league baseball ventures over
a four game span, team play indicates that the Eagles will
progress favorably, despite the loss of key senior players
who recently graduated.
Game One
The Eagles had a double header with Rushville on Saturday,
June 9. Eagle senior pitcher Brandon Gehl earned a win over
Rushville, while delivering from the mound in the Eagle summer
opener. Gehl pitched 3 innings and faced only 9 batters in
his debut, collecting 6 K's and 3 ground outs, while the Eagles
jumped out to a 8-0 lead.
Zach Simon and Blake Sutton pitched the remainder of the game
for the Eagles. The final score was JCD 16-5 after 5 complete
innings of play.
Game Two
The second of the double header found junior Matt Gehl on
the mound for the Eagles. In 3 innings of work he gave up
2 runs to Rushville, however he and his Eagle teammates were
able to score 6 to lead 6-2, securing him the win.
Eagle senior David Busch came on in relief and contained the
Rushville team over the next 3 innings at the plate, holding
them scoreless. The final score was JCD 12-2 in 5 1/2 innings.
Game Three
Summer league play found the Eagles at home, squaring off
against Greensburg on Wednesday, June 13.
The Eagles secured a victory by the score of 2-1 after 4 batters
in the top of the 7th inning went to the batters box. The
lead off walk in the top of the 7th to Zach Simon proved fatal
to Greensburg, as Eric Horan drove him home for the win.
Winning pitcher for the Eagles was Matt Gehl who went 5 innings.
David Busch closed the door to end the game the last 2 innings
of Greensburg at bats.
Game Four
The Eagles took on the team from Milan on Friday, June 15.
Brandon Gehl opened from the mound for the Eagles, pitching
for 4 innings. Austin Lord pitched the last inning for the
Eagles, containing the shut out.
The final score was JCD 11-0 after 5 innings of play.
