Jac-Cen-Del Eagle coach and team are excited as '07 season nears

Gary Franklin - Sports Editor
Jac-Cen-Del Eagle Varsity Soccer Coach Mark Jones and his players glow when one speaks of their hopes for the upcoming season. The team participated in a summer soccer showcase at Pendleton on Saturday and Sunday, July 21 and 22. The showcase included 48 different high school boys' teams, which included many of the best teams of Indiana and Illinois.
The Eagles played New Castle's Trojans on Saturday morning, claiming a 3-2 victory, only after a shoot out as regulation time ended in a 2-2 tie.
Those who followed JCD last year know that this is not a new finish for the Eagles, who had to win several of those games via the shoot out.
On Sunday morning, the Eagles were slated to compete against Vincennes Lincoln. JCD won that game 5-2. The final competition for the Eagles was a victory as well as they defeated Westview, 2-1.
Both JCD and Westview entered the match at 2-0 for the tournament. A hard fought battle closed with JCD the victor.
The Eagle leading scorers for the weekend event were David Busch and Zach Simon. Shane Adams handled the goalie duties quite well. Adams has big shoes to fill as graduated senior Daniel Leonetti was superb in the spot for the team last season.
The Eagle roster included seniors: David Busch, Jeremy Wagner, Brock Billman, Eric Horan, Zach Simon, Kellen Stolze and Danny Meister. Junior players are: Gerald Hardesty, Joe Rangel, Josh Forbes and Justin Stepelton. Sophomores include: Eric Wirth, Michael Luers, Renee Meister, Brandon Wilhoit, Shane Adams and Alyssa Stolze. Freshman players moving up to the high school team this season are: Megan Hardy and Stephen Douglas.
Unavailable for the showcase action were team members sophomore Spencer Purdy, and freshmen Trevor Arnett, Heather Linville, Becca Meister and Andi Roberts.
Coach Jones noted, "The kids worked very hard this summer. We have played a very challenging schedule including many large schools such as Pendleton Heights, Michigan City, Mount Vernon and Lawrence Central. We enter the season having won four games in a row. If the kids continue to work hard, we should have a successful regular season and be very competitive in the state tournament."
"This showcase tournament just experienced was a great way to end the summer season."

Pictured left to right in back row are Ron and Vickie Wagner. Front row are daughters Kara and Abby. The family runs in many 5K events as a form of healthy family living that's become a family tradition. The Wagner's are from Napoleon and the girls attend JCD. Kara is an 8th grader and Abby is going into the 4th this fall. They have participated as a family in many events for approximately three years with Abby joining the 5K's last year.
