South Ripley Boys Soccer Team claims opener victory at home

Gary Franklin - Sports Editor
Anxious for the season to get started, the Raider players and Coach Matt Obendorf were wringing their hands, waiting for the bus delivering the Christian Academy team for their opening game of 2007. The game originally scheduled to begin at 5 PM was delayed to 5:30 to give the Academy students more time to make the trip to Versailles. Finally on Friday , August 18, the game got underway.
Hard fought by both teams, the Raiders delivered for a win by a 2-1 final score. Lots of banging and sliding by both teams ensued as each tried desperatewly to get the upper hand on the other.
The Raiders had a new man in the goalie position as Kyle Taylor filled the shoes vacated by graduating Josh Cumberworth. Only joining the team this season, Taylor is expected to be a very productive addition and if the first game is any type of measuring stick, expectations are right on.
The two Raoiders to put scores on the board in the opener were Nathan Hensley and Derrick Wade.
Raider Chase Grider was attributed with an assist, and Jake McConnell established an assist and was credited with many defensive stops.
The Raiders are determined in tune and are expected to rattle more than a few chains as they progress through this fall season.
The team has great enthusiasm and appears to be short fused making them explosive on the field. Any team taking them lightly by any means should probably bring extra lunch and perhaps a snack or two.
