Indian soccer team celebrates first win in four years

Gary Franklin - Sports Editor
Smiling faces abounded as the Milan coed soccer team filed off their bus, returning home from a first ever victory. Their win was over the Madison Shawe Hilltoppers onThursday evening, September 5.
Ironically, with many injuries abounding them, and many of the Indian team members occupied with the East Central Cross Country run, they found enough stamina to take the game.
The Indians, "according to Coach Kevin Walter", scored in the first minute of the contest, but were unable to add points during the rest of regulation play.
However, with just under two minutes left in regulation, the Hilltoppers struck for a tie. The Toppers too were unable to score again, leading to a shoot out.
In the shootout, five players were selected by the Shawe coach to shoot, along with his goal keeper to defend against the Indian attack.
Indians TJ Shannon, Alex Walter, Todd Edwards and Jordan Johnson hit goal shots to earn the 2-1 win.
Robby Schlotterbeck defended against the Toppers in the goal for the Indians..

They are two of the four new team benches built at the request of Donna Dykes by her father Virgil Werner and painted by Milan Art teacher Bob Hunger. The coach and team are very proud of and grateful for the generosity shown them by this gesture of caring fans.
