Lady Indian Volleyballers enjoy the festive eighth annual awards banquet

Gary Franklin, Sports Writer

Milan volleyball coaches, team members parents and friends, went all out when setting up a pride filled evening to honor their Lady Indian volleyball teams. This year's banquet was held on Wednesday night, December 19, at the Milan VFW Hall and marked their eighth annual awards and honors banquet.
Complete with a whole roasted hog and table after table of side dishes, desserts and drinks gave no one in attendance any reason to go home hungry.
Treated nearly as royalty, the girls varsity team of '07-'08 included eight senior members who enjoyed bringing home the sectional championship trophy and nets two years in a row. In the process, the team was treated to a limo drive to dinner at Olive Garden between their past sectional championship win and their regional appearance.
Head Volleyball Coach Terry Wullenweber welcomed the players, their parents and guests to the banquet, thanking everyone for their dedication and appreciation of the girls' efforts. A blessing was given for the buffet style meal and attenders, and dining began, leading to the awards program
Upon opening the awards portion of the evening, Coach Wullenweber apologized for the banquet ending up being set up during finals week, explaining circumstances had derailed the plans of having it earlier. He noted that normally the banquet has nearly 100% attendance, but due to finals being the same week, many were uncomfortable not studying for them.
He next introduced Karisa Voss. Voss, in her first year as seventh grade coach, thanked the girls for their participation and their parents for their promptness in picking them up at the end of practices and following games.
Following an introducion of each of her seventh grade girls team members, Voss noted that they had finished their season with a 6-6 record, and found many improvements as the season progressed.
The seventh grade team included Nikki McDonald, Miranda Teeters, Shelby Tippitt, Rachel Smith, Hannah Mulroy, Mallory McKittrick, LeeAnna White, Maria Voss, Mary Beth Rohrig, Cortney Karn, Sara Strassel and Ashley Ahaus.
Eighth Grade Coach Brandy Lacey next took the podium, introducing each of her team members, deliberating a little about each of them. The team included Lydia Ertel, Koehler Morrissey, Devin Riley, Jessica Strassel, Kayla Bockstahler, Tatijana Marsee, Markie Smith, Danielle Price, Brandi Hoffman, Brianna Crabtree and Deann Price. Coach Lacey noted that their season record concluded 7-10.
Freshman Coach Brianna Kovacich introduced the Lady Indian freshman team. It included Elaina Voss, Kalie Egbert, Lizzie Fuller, Stephanie Kirk, Kelsey Reese, Erika Parker, Arielle Noel, Elizabeth Smith and Hannah Wessler. Coach Kovacich noted that their season had been a good one, ending with a 12-2 overall record.
The Lady Indian JV team, coached by Joanne Siebert included Becca Haugh, Kayla Stutler, Darcy Robinson, Mary Mortara, Montana Winters, Julie Hoffroggee, Amber Clark, Audra Morgan, Becky Davis, Lacie Wood and for a short period, Jessica Wessler. Wessler was moved to varsity early in the season when senior Danessa Cutter suffered an injury.
Milan Varsity Lady Indians under the watchful eye of Coach Terry Wullenweber included eight seniors: Kady Alloway, Kirby Alloway, Kim Atwell, Kaity Barton, Abby Bergman, Danessa Cutter, Miccah Roberts and Jennifer Wullenweber., and four juniors: Jessica Wessler, Becca Haugh, Kayla Stutler and Darcy Robinson.
The varsity concluded their season with an overall record of 21-16. Coach noted that they had entered the year shooting for a 30 win season, but injuries, etc., along the way curtailed their expectations.
The Lady Indian varsity set new school records at Milan with their efforts, of which include; back to back sectional championship trophies, titles and nets, 1213 kills, 1077 set assists, 340 aces and 2172 digs.
