Marvin Downey
Marvin Downey, 52, of Holton, passed away on
Sunday, December 23, 2007 at the St. Vincent Jennings Community
Hospital in North Vernon. He was born at Batesville on April
20, 1955, the son of Thomas and Dixie Renfro Downey. He married
Darla Bustle on November 13, 1978 and she survives.
Other survivors include four sons, Thomas Downey of Cross Plains,
Billy Downey of Versailles, and Jeff and Ryan Downey both of
Holton; one sister, Beverly Austin and her husband Bobby of
St. Cloud, Florida; two brothers, Doug Downey and his wife Karen,
and Randy Downey all of Holton; and his mother-in-law, Norma
Hopper of Versailles. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Downey was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church and a
1973 graduate of South Ripley High School. He had been employed
as a tractor mechanic at Woods Farm Supply in Versailles for
30 years.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 28 at 11 a.m.
at the Hopewell Baptist Church with burial in the Hopewell Cemetery.
Visitation is being held today, Thursday, from 5-8 p.m. at the
Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10 a.m.
until time of services on Friday at the church. Memorials may
be given to the Holton Fire Department in care of the funeral
home.
Joy Pelsor
Joy Pelsor, 80, of Muncie, formerly of Dillsboro,
passed away on Saturday, December 22, 2007 at Muncie Health
& Rehabilitation Center. She was born on December 2, 1927
in Moores Hill. In 1946, she married Lee Pelsor, and he preceded
her in death in 1982.
Survivors include: two daughters, Greta Cope of Parker City
and LuAnn Pelsor of Nashville; two grandchildren, Kevin (Kenna)
Cope and Karrie (David) Osborne; 8 great grandchildren; one
sister, Elizabeth (Paul) McBride, of California.
Mrs. Pelsor was a very active member in the Dillsboro United
Methodist Church, the Eastern Star, and an associate member
of Gethsemane Methodist Church in Muncie. She was employed for
several years at Seagrams.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 28 at the
Dillsboro United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. with burial in
the Oakdale Cemetery. Visitation is being held today, Thursday,
from 5-8 p.m. at Filter-DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro. Memorials
may be given to Muncie Rehabilitation Center Activity Fund or
to Dillsboro United Methodist Church.
Corporal Caleb T. Falin
Caleb T. Falin Corporal, USMC, 22 of Greensburg,
Indiana passed away Friday December 21, 2007 at Camp LeJune,
North Carolina. He was born September 20, 1985 in Columbus,
Indiana, the son of Bruce Falin and Lynne Adams. He graduated
from South Decatur High School. Upon graduation he joined the
U.S. Marine Corps. He was assigned to the Amphibious Assault
Battalion, Camp Lejune, North Carolina. He had completed 2 tours
of duty in IRAQ. He was a member of the South Decatur Baptist
Church and a life member of the National Rifle Association.
He is survived by his Father: Bruce (Nancy) Falin; his Mother:
Lynne Adams Both of Greensburg, Indiana; One Brother: AIC Joshua
Falin who is stationed a Boling AFB in Washington D.C., One
Sister: Rebecca Ann Falin of Greensburg. Maternal Grandmother:
Sandra Adams; Paternal Grandmother: Vida Falin; Many Aunts,
Uncles, Nephews, & Nieces also survive.
He was preceded in death by his Maternal Grandfather: Don Adams;
and his Paternal Grandfather: William Falin.

Paul J. Jefferson, 73, of Moores Hill, passed

Ivan D. Allen
Ivan D. Allen, 93, of Versailles, formerly of
Vevay and Shelbyville, passed away on Monday, December 24, 2007
at Major Hospital in Shelbyville. He was born on June 21, 1914
in Switzerland County, the son of David Jackson and Bess Lucy
(Bliss) Allen. He married Doris L. Turner on June 25, 1938 in
Lawrenceburg and she preceded him in death.
Survivors include: three daughters, Carolyn Scott and her husband
Larry D., Vickie Coy and husband Steven, all of Shelbyville,
and Tammy Moore of Versailles; son, Richard "Jack"
Stonebraker of Big Canoe, Georgia; 14 grandchildren: Mark, Gina,
Jonathan, Mindy, Travis, Ashley, Derek, Jennifer, Danny, Kari,
Kristi, Amy, Leah and Jill; 19 great grandchildren: Lindsey,
Kelly, Blayre, Devon, Katie, Collin, Kylee, Ryan, Mackenzie,
Coleman, Ellie, Joshua, Ryan, Alisha, Erin, Ethan, Kohl, Brayden
and Lane; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his son,
David Douglas Allen; his sisters: Lelia M. Pratt and Evalena
"Hap" Hatch.
Mr. Allen was a farmer for many years in Switzerland County.
He was employed from 1955-1961 at Ross 421 Supermarket
in Shelbyville as the Produce Manager. He and Doris owned and
operated the Ohio Valley Lanes in Vevay from 1961-1966. They
also co-owned and operated the Country Bait House in Versailles
from 1972-1989. He was a member of the Center Square Church
of Christ in Center Square. Mr. Allen will be remembered for
his love of fishing, hunting, gardening and bowling.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 29 at 11
a.m. at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay with Rev.
William Horner officiating. Burial will be in the Vevay Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Friday, from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Association or the Kidney Foundation, contribution cards are

Rev. Wilburn E. Cropper
Rev. Wilburn E. Cropper, 93, of Maysville, KY,
for-merly of Milan, died Thurs-day, December 20, 2007 in Schertz,
Texas. He was born June 16, 1914 in Lewis County, Kentucky,
the son of George W. (Jack) and Lizzy (Meyers) Cropper. He married
Esta Mae Henderson on February 4, 1933 and she preceded him
in death on June 14, 1988. He later married Irene Souder Henderson
in 1989 and she survives.
Other survivors include two sons James (Mary) Cropper of Schertz,
TX and Dennis (Brenda) Cropper of Indianapolis; one daughter
Jeannine (Hubert) Applegate of Greensburg: six grandchildren,
four great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
His first wife and one brother and three sisters preceded him
in death.
Rev. Cropper was a farmer in Fleming County, Kentucky and worked
at Lucky Stride Shoe Company in Maysville. He later attended
Emery University in Atlanta, GA, where he prepared for his ministry.
He became and ordained United Methodist minister. After retirement
he served at the Delaware United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held today, Thursday, December 27 at 11
a.m. at the Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan with Rev. Harris
Long officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery,
near Madison.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Founda-tion.
Dewey E. Dixon
Dewey E. Dixon, 83, of Hamilton, OH, formerly
of North Vernon and Osgood, passed away on Friday, De-cember
21, 2007. Visitation is being held today, Thurs-day, at the
Rullman Hunger Denney Funeral Home in Aurora. Services will
follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with burial in the Mt.
Sinai Cemetery in Aurora. Rullman Hunger Denney Funeral Home

Emiko O. Settle
Emiko O. Settle, 63, of Milan, passed away on
Wednesday, December 26, 2007, at her residence. She was born
on July 3, 1944, in Japan, the daughter of Kama Oshiro. She
married Charles E. Settle on November 29, 1969 and he survives.
Other survivors include two brothers, ten sisters and sister-in-law,
Mrs. Joe Edens of Milan.
Mrs. Settle was a homemaker and attended the Milan Wesleyan
Church.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2007
at the Milan Wesleyan Church with Rev. LaMar Brown officiating.
Burial will be in the Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday at the
church. Memorials may be given to the Milan Wesleyan Church.

Ralph Edward Griswold, 49, of Vevay, passed awy
on Friday, December 21, 2007. Funeral services were held on

Gracie Marie (Griffith) ONeal, 82, of Allensville,
passed away on Monday, December 24, 2007. Funeral services will

Howard J. Lustig
Howard J. Lustig, 86, of Versailles, formerly
of Clarksville, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2007, at the
Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. He was born near Osgood
on March 14, 1921, the son of Frederick and Bertha May Wheeler
Lustig. He married Hilda Salyers on June 21, 1943 and she survives.
Other survivors include one sister, Mrs. Leona Wagner of Osgood;
and two grandchildren. He was pre-ceded in death by his parents,
his son John, and his brother Lawrence Lustig.
Mr. Lustig was an Army veteran of WWII. He served in the 880th
Air Squadron as a Special Vehicle Operator. He received the
American Theatre Ribbon, Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct
Medal. He was a member of the Charity Baptist Church at Clarksville.
He had been involved in the trucking business for several years,
hauling logs for Hyatts Sawmill at Holton and being a
terminal manager for Good Way Trucking at Clarksville. He also
had been employed with Cunningham Campers at Jeffersonville.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 21 at 11 a.m.
at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Dale
Day of the Versailles Church of Christ officiating. Burial will
be in the Holton Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 10
a.m. until time of services. Memorials may be given to the Holton

Donald Walter Smith
Donald Walter Smith, 89, of Greendale, passed
away on Tuesday afternoon, December 18, 2007, at Shady Nook
Care Center in Lawrenceburg. He was born in Versailles on June
13, 1918 the son of Lewis Franklin Smith and Clara Selmeyer
Smith. He married Evelyn Vornheder on June 16, 1945 and she
survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Philip Luther Smith (Mary
Ann) of Cincinnati, and Dr. Thomas Erian Smith (Adrienne) of
Penn; one daughter, Kimberly Sue (Bob) Temple, of Bedford, KY;
seven grandchildren; five nieces and nephews that they raised
as their own children. He was preceded in death by two sisters.
Mr. Smith was a lifelong member of St. Peter Lutheran Church
in Dillsboro, where he served as a Sunday school teacher for
over 50 years, and sang in the church choir. He was employed
at Aurora Casket Co. for many years.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 21 at 11 a.m.
at the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dillsboro. Burial will be
in the Oakdale Cemetery. Visitation is being held today, Thursday,
at Filter-DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro from 5-8 p.m. Memorials

Earl Edwin Scudder
Earl Edwin Scudder, 84, of Dillsboro, passed away Wednesday,
December 12, 2007 at the Waters of Dillsboro, Ross Manor. He
was born September 5, 1923 in Switzerland County the son of
Edwin Stoops Scudder and Olive Slack Scudder. He married Nora
LeRichie in 1950 and she preceded him in death on August 19,
1994.
He is survived by his two sons, Jay Fred Scudder and his wife,
Loretta, of Guilford, and Carroll Edwin Scudder and his wife,
Shannon; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren; three brothers,
Carroll and Mavis Scudder, Leland and Faye Scudder, and John
Scudder; one sister, Bonnie and Ralph Niles.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Rennie Scudder, and
one sister, Elizabeth Cheek.
He graduated from Patriot High School, and was employed at Seagrams
and as a builder for a period of time. In 1942, he joined the
US Coast Guard and served time in Greenland during WWII. In
1950 he was discharged from the Coast Guard, and came back home
to the Dillsboro area.
For 37 years, Earl was employed at CG &E (Cincinnati Gas
& Electric) as an operator. Earl loved Reds baseball, Notre
Dame football, and Indiana basketball.
During his wife's illness, he was a wonderful help to her and
took good care of her. Because of poor health, Earl has spent
the last 14 years at the Waters of Dillsboro, Ross Manor.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at the Filter-DeVries
Funeral Home in Dillsboro, with interment in New Liberty Cemetery,
East Enterprise, with military rites under the direction of
American Legion Post 262. Filter DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro
was in charge of arrangenents.
Betty Louise Grinstead Lyle
Betty Louise Grinstead Lyle, 66, of Hickory, NC, formerly of
Butlerville, passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2007, at her
residence. She was born on January 5, 1941, in Austin, the daughter
of Irvin and June Speer Grinstead.
Survivors include her mother, June Grinstead of Versailles;
a son, Carl Beeman of Butlerville; three grandchildren, Kane
and Sarah Beeman of Butlerville, and Grant Gibson of North Vernon;
and a sister, Linda Rump of Olean. She was preceded in death
by her father, Irvin Grinstead; a son, Paul A. Beeman; and a
brother, Thomas Grinstead.
Ms. Lyle was a 1959 graduate of Holton High School. She had
previously worked at Ellis Hosiery Factory.
Funeral services were held on December 16 at the Tanglewood
Baptist Church and burial was in the Tanglewood Cemetery. Memorials
may be made to the Salvation Army or donors choice through
the funeral home. Arrangements were made in care of Sawyer-Pickett
Funeral & Cremation Services.
Pearl Roe
Pearl Roe, 61, of Holton, formerly of North Vernon, passed away
on Tuesday, December 18, 2007. Visitation will be held on Friday,
December 21 from 10 a.m. until time of funeral services which
will start at 1 p.m. at the Butlerville Mennonite Church, with
burial in the Vernon Cemetery. Arrangements were made in care

Sgt. Kenneth Raymond (KR) Booker
Sgt. Kenneth Raymond (KR) Booker, 25, of
Vevay, was killed in action in Iraq on Wednesday, November 14,
2007. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m.
at the Switzerland County High School Gymnasium in Vevay with
burial in the Slawson Cemetery in Bennington. Visitation will
be from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Switzerland County
High School and on Sunday from noon until time of services.

Janice F. Smith
Janice F. Smith, 70, of Cross Plains, passed
away on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at the Manderley Health Care
Center in Osgood. She was born at Lumberton, North Carolina
on January 30, 1937, the daughter of John and Eunice Hayes Edwards.
She married Robert Smith on July 24, 1954 and he preceded her
in death on March 4, 1983.
Survivors include one son, David Smith of North Vernon; one
daughter, Gloria Konkle and her husband Ron of Rexville; five
grandchildren and one great granddaughter; and one brother,
Bobby Edwards and his wife Naomi of Booneville, NC.
She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Gwen, her parents,
and one grandson.
Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church at
Dewberry. She was retired from Thompsons at North Vernon where
she worked as a machinist.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 7 at 10:30 a.m.
at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Dewberry with Pastor Ralph
Campen officiating. Burial will be at the Grandview Memorial
Garden at Madison. Visitation is being held today, Thursday,
Dec. 6 from 5-8 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home
in Versailles and from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Friday

Wilma Alice Sharp
Wilma Alice Sharp, 87, of Rising Sun, passed
away on Tuesday, December 4, 2007. Funeral services will be
held on Friday, December 7 at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the
Rising Sun New Cemetery. Visitation will be today, Thursday,
