SR Lady Raider softball season opens against EC Lady Trojans
Gary Franklin, Sports Writer
The originally scheduled Lady Raider varsity softball
team's season opener on Monday, April 6, against the Jennings
County Lady Panthers at JCHS was postponed due to inclement
weather. The result allowed the Lady Raiders to open their
'09 season at home where they battled the East Central Lady
Trojans on Wednesday, April 8.
With the weather still hanging on to a bit of wintry bite,
the game began. Anticipation of a solid season rang high for
the Raiders as the two teams met at the plate for the normal
referee outlining of ground rules for the field.
Once finished, the Lady Raiders took the field on defense
as the Lady Trojan's initiated their battery on the offensive
side.
Lady Raider star pitcher Kyla Sexton provided the special
delivery from the mound for the home team as EC entered the
batters box, one by one.
Other than Sexton on the mound, Lady Raider starters included
Janna Lloyd in left field, Katie Landwehr in center field
and Jacque Castner in right field. Covering the infield were
Erica Ester at third base, Kasey King handled the short stop
duties, Rebecca Bodenberg covered second base with Rachel
Mathes controlling the bag at first. Kaitlyn Welch took care
of business behind the plate as the Lady Raider catcher.
The game ended in extra inning action after being played to
a 1-1 tie through the regular seven innings. Yet tied through
eight, an unexpected Lady Trojan eruption in the top of the
ninth left the Lady Raiders down by a score of 7-1. That became
the final score as the Lady Raiders could not recover.
Lady Raider Sexton went the full 9 innings on the mound. Hits
during the game were by: Bodenberg with two, King one, Mathes
one, Welch one and Landwehr with an RBI that scored King for
the only Raider run of the game.
The Lady Raider scheduled varsity and JV games against the
Madison Consolidated Lady Cubs on Friday, April 10 and the
varsity and JV games scheduled for Saturday, April 11, against
the South Decatur Lady Cougars, were all rained out.
The Lady Raiders scheduled game on Monday evening April 13,
against the Switzerland County Lady Pacers was likewise in
doubt of being able to be played at the time of this articles
writing.
The Lady Raiders are slated to travel to neighboring Jac-Cen-Del
for a varssity and JV match on Wednesday, April 15 that is
to begin at 5 p.m., weather permitting.

names Lady Eagle sophomore Becca Wagner to '09 Top 100
Gary Franklin, Sports Writer
Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagle Coach Scott Smith announced
that his sophomore Lady Eagle Becca Wagner has again been
selected to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association's Top
100 underclassmen
Wagner, a 5'5" guard, enjoyed the honor as a Top 100
freshman and is again regaled as a sophomore.
Coaches in the association cast ballots for deserving players
in their areas and the highest vote getters are invited.
The workout, to be held at Ben Davis HS early in July, will
afford the opportunity for the coaches association to identify
and promote potential college basketball players to colleges
and universties across the country.
Wagner led the Lady Eagles to a 16-6 record and a sectional
championship during the '08-'09 season. She scored 14.4 points
per game to go along with her 3 assists, 2 steals and 5.2
rebounds per game average for the season while leading the
Lady Eagles with 44% free throw and shooting from the field
Commenting about Wagner's selection to the top 100, Eagle
Head Coach Scott Smith stated, "Becca is very deseerving
of this honor. She consistantly works to improve her game
in the off-season and to be selected as a top 100 participant
in her first two years of varsity play is quite an accomplishment.
We are all very proud of her."
