John
E. Wonning
John E. Wonning, 88, of Osgood, passed away Thursday, June
25, 2009 at St. Andrews Health Campus in Batesville. He was
born July 17, 1920 in Batesville, the son of Monroe H. and
Clara (Clemenz) Wonning.
After graduating from Batesville High School he joined the
US Army Air Corp and was a radio operator on a B17. His plane
was shot down over German occupied France where he was picked
up by the French Underground but had to be turned over to
the Germans because they could not treat his wounds. He was
later wounded again when American planes strafed what they
thought was a German troop train, but was being used to transport
both military and civilian prisoners of war. This time his
wounds were very serious. After the war he worked for his
fathers dairy farm and later bought the processing plant
from his dad.
He also played the saxophone in several local dance bands.
He married Maxine Bush on April 17, 1945 in Louisville. They
moved to Florida in 1963 and owned a mobile home park. He
later worked and retired from the Phillips Corp in Florida.
Mr. Wonning is survived by his wife, Maxine Wonning; daughter
Connie (Earl) Walke of Osgood; grandchildren Jeff Walke, Tamara
Drazick and Ben Walke and great grandchildren Trae, Shaden
& Devery Drazick and Tyler and Kayla Walke. In addition
to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Juanita
"Neetz" Lindemann.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 29 at the St. Mark
Lutheran Church in Batesville with Pastor Jill Kepler Campbell
officiating. Burial with military graveside rites was in the
St. Mark Lutheran Cemetery.

Gerald (Sonny) Mitchell
Gerald (Sonny) Mitchell, 66, of Moores Hill, died Friday,
June 26, 2009.
Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, June 30 at 12
noon at the Moores Hill First Baptist Church. Burial will
follow in the Gibson Cemetery in Bright.

Brenda ODell
Brenda ODell, 53, of Osgood, died Saturday, June 27,
2009 at Swiss Villa Nursing Home in Vevay. She was born January
27, 1956 in Portsmouth, Ohio the daughter of Benjamin Adkins
and Margaret Ann Adkins Dulaney.
Survivors include her mother, Margaret Dulaney of Milan; stepfather,
Dick Dulaney of Milan; two sons, Jamie Murray of Nashville,
Tennessee and Kevin ODell of Camden, Arkansas; one daughter,
Christen Eversole of Versailles; paternal grandmother, Hermance
Adkins of Portsmouth, Ohio; maternal grandmother, Jaunetta
Peters of Portsmouth, Ohio; two brothers, Dana Messer of Siotoville,
Ohio and Scott Messer of Jacksonville, Florida; three sisters,
Marlene Bruns, Tammy Smith, Angel Dulaney all of Milan; four
nieces; 14 nephews and one grandchild, Hunter Lee ODell.
She was preceded in death by her father, Benjamin Adkins.
Ms ODell worked at Ohio Rod for several years and was
of the Protestant faith.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, June 30 from 6-8 p.m.
at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan. Funeral services will
be held Wednesday, July 1 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with
Rev. Tom Holt officiating. Burial will follow in the New Craven
Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the cancer fund.

L. Fuller
Margie L. Fuller, 80, of Milan, passed away Thursday, June
18, 2009 at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was born
June 9, 1929, in Paris, Tennessee, the son of Percy and Ruby
(Nichols) Corbett and stepfather John Brumm. She married Harlan
Fuller on April 24, 1948 and he preceded her in death on December
12, 1998.
Survivors include daughter, Donna J. (John) Wall of Greensburg;
loving companion, George Hendricks of Milan; step-grandchildren,
Traci Stanger and Kori (Dave) Murphy; step-great grandchildren,
Bayleigh, Olivia, Mason, Logan and Maggie; and several nieces
and nephews.
Mrs. Fuller was a homemaker and a member of the Milan First
Baptist Church, Ladies Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and
the Eastern Star.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 22 at Laws-Carr-Moore
Funeral Home in Milan with Rev. Tom Holt and Rev. Harris Long
officiating. Burial was in New Craven Cemetery in Milan. Memorials

Gladys Lorraine Ulrich
Gladys Lorraine Ulrich, 97, of Dillsboro, passed away Saturday,
June 20, 2009 at The Waters of Dillsboro, Dillsboro Manor.
She was born on November 5, 1911, in Manchester Township,
the daughter of James M. Cross and Florence Rumsey Cross.
She married Donald Ulrich in 1937.
Survivors include sister, Thelma Slater of Puyallup, WA; two
nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother-Arthur
as an infant, and sister- Mildred Beatty.
Mrs. Ulrich graduated from Moores Hill High School in 1930.
She assisted her husband in operating the Ulrich Funeral Home
in Dillsboro. In 1971, they retired and enjoyed traveling.
She was a member of the Dillsboro United Methodist Church,
the Southeast Indiana Shrine Ladies Auxiliary, Phi Beta Psi
Sorority, Theta Gamma Associate Chapter in Aurora and the
Dillsboro Civic Club.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 25, at 3 p.m.
at Filter-DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro. Visitation will
be Thursday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial
will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Moores Hill. Memorials

Evelyn Marie Brown, 71, of Moores Hill, passed away Thursday,
June 18, 2009. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June

Floyd Konkle
Floyd Konkle, 71, of Payneville, KY, formerly of Switzerland
County, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009 at Medco Center,
Brandenburg, KY. He was born July 9, 1937 at Switzerland County,
the son of David H. and Beatrice (McMackin) Konkle. He married
Mildred "Millie" Robbins on March 17, 1959.
Survivors include two daughters, Sue (Dale) Pike of Payneville,
KY, and LeAnn Briddle of Bradenburg, KY; one son, Ron (Gloria)
Konkle of Cross Plains; one sister, Leona (Louis) Struckman
of Dillsboro; six grandchildren, Chris and Heather Konkle,
Scotty and Jessica Biddle, Paul and Amelia Pike; four great
grandchildren, Madison, Ethan, Mikaela, and Tyler; and several
nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death
by his parents, sister- Ruby Boyce, and brothers- Darrell
and Charles Konkle.
Mr. Konkle was inducted into the U.S. Army on Aug. 1, 1955,
rising to the rank of specialist four, serving Battery D 63rd
AAA MSL Battalion. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 30,
1963, from Fort Sheridan, IL, receiving the Good Conduct Medal.
He was employed at Williamson Heater in Madison as a welder
for ten years; the U.S. Shoe Corporation in Vevay; and the
Switzerland Co. Highway Department in maintenance. He retired
after 20 years of service with the American Commercial Barge
Lines in Jeffersonville.
Mr. Konkle had attended Cross Plains Church of Christ. He
was a life member of the Vevay VFW Post 5396 and the Vevay
American Legion Post 185.
Funeral services are being held today, Tuesday, at 2 p.m.
at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay with Rev.
Ralph Campen of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Dewberry officiating.
Burial will be in the Slawson Cemetery near Bennington. Visitation
will be Tuesday from 1 p.m. until time of services at the
funeral home. Full military honors will be conducted by Vevay
American Legion Post 185 and Vevay VFW Post 5396. Memorials

Gene H. Gunter, 57, of North Vernon passed away Wednesday,
June 17, 2009 at his home. He was born at Holton, on April
20, 1952 the son of Charley and Mary Simpson Gunter.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Brewer, three daughters
Michele Ross, Regina (Robert) Graham, Joyce (Brian) Jines
all of North Vernon, stepdaughters, Terina (Keith) Harold
of Nineveh, Sondra (Chris) Rush of Carrollton, KY, Lisa (Anthony)
Wilks of Vevay, stepsons, Joshua (Juanita) Lock of Canaan,
and Jacob Lock of Paris Crossing, seven grandchildren, nine
step grandchildren and one great grandchild, three brothers,
Roy (Betty) Gunter of New Marion, Ray (Edie) Gunter of Holton,
Willis Gunter of North Vernon, two sisters, Susan Rice of
Versailles, and Brenda Sandlin of North Vernon. He was preceded
in death by his parents, three brothers, Daniel, James and
Charles, two sisters, Lonnie Tyler and Linda Hurst.
Mr. Gunter worked as a machinist for SET Enterprises in North
Vernon. He enjoyed fishing, camping and his golf cart.
Funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Willard Roberts, 90, of St. Petersburg, FL, passed away Sunday,
June 21, 2009 in Florida. He was a former resident of Lawrenceburg
for several years, and a retiree of E.I. Dupont Company. Funeral

Milton F. Hull
Milton
F. Hull, 85, of Columbus, died Friday, June 12, 2009, at Columbus
Regional Hospital. He was born March 16, 1924, in St. Paul,
Indiana, the son of Virgil M. and Izora (Marsh) Hull. He was
raised in Ripley County and had lived in Bartholomew County
since 1968. He graduated from Napoleon High School. He married
Evelyn Pickett on April 20, 1944, in Greensburg.
He was a member of Columbus American Legion Post #24. He enjoyed
Nascar racing and auto mechanics.
He retired in 1967 from the U.S. Air Force as Chief Master
Sgt. He had served during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Following
retirement from the Air Force he worked at the post office
in Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Hull; one daughter, Patricia
Cox of Columbus; three sons, Robert (Raymona) of Westport,
Richard (Sandra) and James (Brenda), all of Columbus; six
grandchildren; nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, twin sister, Mildred
Hull; son-in-law, Jack L. Cox; and grandson, Ricky Hull.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 16 at 1:00 p.m.
at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Malvin
McCullough officiating. Burial will be at the Union Flat Rock
Cemetery with military graveside services.

Kenneth L. Doan
Kenneth L. Doan, 71, of Wapakoneta, passed
away Thursday, June 11, 2009 at the Dayton V.A. Hospital.
He was born October 24, 1937 in Louisville, Kentucky, the
son of Charles Lee and Lula Mae Brown Doan. He married Shirley
Doan who preceded him in death on January 12, 1999.
Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Kay Doan and Kendra
Lee Southern, both of Wapakoneta and Krystal Elaine Smith
of Glenwood; five grandchildren: Dallas and Levi Brown, Michael
and Bridget Smith and Taylor Sullivan. He was preceded in
death by his parents and one brother, Jim Doan.
Mr. Doan was a truck driver with Sharon Brown Trucking Company
in Indiana. He had joined the U.S. Navy and then signed up
with the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam and Germany.
A sharing time with the family will begin at 2 p.m. on Thursday,
June 18 at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home in Cridersville,
Ohio. The family will receive friends after the sharing time.

at his home. He was born at Madison on November 25, 1988 the
son of William Clayton and Connie McClain.
Survivors include his father William Clayton of Osgood; his
mother Connie McClain of Madison; one sister Sally Clayton
of Milton, Kentucky; half-brother William Clayton of Texas;
half-sister Heather Freeman of Osgood; maternal grandfather
Alex McClain of Centralia, Illinois; maternal grandmother
Ramona Farrell of Versailles.
Mr. Clayton was a 2008 graduate of Madison Consolidated High
School and was currently a student at Ivy Tech in Madison,
studying business.

Earl S.
Strimple, 93, of Versailles, passed away Saturday, June 13,
2009 at St. Andrews in Batesville. He was born at Versailles
on December 20, 1915, the son of Charles P. and Shirley Sheldon
Strimple. He was married to Ruby Hammond on January 9, 1937
and she survives.
Other survivors include two daughters Sue (Terry) Boiman of
Lakeside Park, Kentucky and Connie (Gary) Banks of Inverness,
Florida; three grandchildren, Emily (Chris) Jahr of Gainesville,
Florida, Zachary Banks of Inverness, Florida, and Ben Boiman
of Lakeside Park, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his
parents, his brother Wilfred Strimple and his sister Dorthea
Pfautz.
Mr. Strimple was a 1934 graduate of Versailles High School.
He was a 37 year employee of the B & O Railroad where
he worked as a track inspector, retiring in 1979. He and his
wife had owned and operated the 421 Motel in Versailles for
21 years. He was a member of the Tyson United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 17 at 11 a.m.
at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with
Rev. James Byerly of the Tyson United Methodist Church officiating.

Connie McEvoy, 52, of Holton, passed away Monday, June 15,

John W. Bailey Sr.
John W. Bailey Sr., 64, of Dillsboro, passed away Wednesday,
June 10, 2009 at his home. He was born on February 14, 1945
in Indianapolis, the son of Raymond Bailey and Mabel Porter
Bailey. He married Tara Shelton Bailey on August 23, 1985,
and she survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Johnny W. Bailey Jr., of
Rising Sun, and Jay F. Scudder Jr., of Sunman; four daughters,
Kimberly S. (John) Dick, of S. Carolina, Tabatha S. Bailey,
of Aurora, Angelia J. Sturgeon, of Greendale, and Renee (Jason)
Pennington, of Evansville; 12 grandchildren; and nine brothers
and sisters.
Mr. Bailey served his country during the Vietnam Conflict
from 1962 to 1968. He was a collector of antiques and coins
and was excellent at refinishing furniture. He was employed
for 13 years at Argosy Casino, working in maintenance until
2009.
Funeral services were held Monday at Filter-DeVries Funeral
Home in Dillsboro, with Pastor Tom Holt officiating. Memorials
may be given to Operation "Thank You" in Cincinnati
to benefit families of servicemen who are fighting in the

Lora Louise Barrish
Lora Louise Barrish, 72, of Fort Smith, AR, passed away Thursday,
June 11, 2009. She was born July 16, 1936 in Oneida, KY, the
daughter of Lee and Mary Abner Doyle. She married Jack Barrish
and he preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Barrish of Oklahoma
City, OK, and Janine (Jason) Boyett of Muldrow, OK; one son
Jonathan Barrish at home; three sisters, Beda Davish of Hamilton,
OH, Stella Englehardt of Versailles, and Jean James of Versailles;
one brother, David Doyle of Big Springs, TX; two grandchildren,
Hannah Jean Boyett and John Hayden Boyett. She was preceded
in death by her parents, her husband, brothers- Brook, Elmo
and Edgar Doyle, and sisters- Ann, Ruby, Chloe and Charlotte
Doyle, Dorothy Miller, Jackie Mock and Genny Tucker.
Mrs. Barrish was a 1954 graduate of Holton High School. She
was a registered nurse.
Funeral services are being held today, Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.
at Edwards Van-Alma Chapel with burial at Fort Smith National
Cemetery under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home.

Lee Phillips
Lee Phillips, 77, of Versailles passed away Thursday, June
11, 2009 at his home. He was born near Friendship on October
18, 1931 the son of Leroy and Bernice Thornton Phillips. He
was married to Wanda Rose on October 18, 1952 and she survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, Marcia (Pete) Holcomb
of Versailles, Bennilee Westmeier of Nineveh, and Sandra (Lynn)
Works of Bennington; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren;
one sister Fleeta Smith of Versailles. He was preceded in
death by his parents and his granddaughter Clarissa Westmeier.
Mr. Phillips was a self-employed truck driver. He was a veteran
of the Korean War and a member of the Versailles American
Legion.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 15 at the Stratton-Karsteter
Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Sherman Hughes of the
Bear Creek Baptist Church at Friendship officiating. Burial
was in the Olive Branch Cemetery near Fairview. Memorials

Carl Campbell
Carl Campbell, 73, of Napoleon, passed away Sunday, June 14,
2009, at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville.
He was born in Cincinnati, OH, on April 6, 1936, the son of
Willie and Mary Edington Campbell. He was married to Sharon
Reed on December 7, 2005 and she survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Katrina Hiett of Aurora
and Bonnie Campbell of Napoleon; and five grandchildren.
Mr. Campbell served in the army from 1957-1959 as a private
first class. He was also a former employee of the Argosy Casino.

Anna Mae Bustle, 77, of Jessup, Georgia, formerly
of Ripley County, passed away Sunday in Jessup. Funeral arrangements

Matthew Paul Obendorf
Matthew Paul Obendorf, 31, of Versailles passed
away Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at the Kings Daughters
Hospital in Madison. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on November
21, 1977 the son of Paul and Cheryll Black Obendorf. He was
married to Veronica Graver on August 20, 2005 and she survives.
Other survivors include his son Benjamin Matthew Obendorf
and his daughter Lauren Catherine Obendorf both at home; his
parents Paul and Cheryll Obendorf; his father and mother-in-law
Mark and Debra Graver of Dillsboro; maternal grandmother Jessie
Schamel of Batesville; one brother John (Julie Ann) Obendorf
of Versailles; two sisters Lindsay Obendorf and Jennifer (Mark)
Darnold both of Madison; brother-in-law Jack Graver of Dillsboro.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Louis and Miriam
Obendorf, Charles Cecil Black, and Olin H. Schamel.
He was a 1996 graduate of South Ripley High School and a graduate
of Full Sail with a degree in Recording Arts Technology. He
was the afternoon DJ at WORX in Madison and was the varsity
soccer coach at South Ripley High School since 2003. He was
a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Olean and enjoyed
music, time with his kids, coaching soccer, Cincinnati Reds
baseball, and IU basketball.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 8 at St. Pauls
Lutheran Church in Olean with Pastor James Culver officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be given
to Matts Mission or Brown Cancer Research Center in

Jeanette C. Popp, 76, of Morris, passed away

David M. Monroe
David M. Monroe, 58, of Versailles, passed
away Friday, June 6, 2009 at his home. He was born at Altadena,
California on January 12, 1951, the son of Marion and Caroline
Hays Monroe.
Survivors include one daughter, Lori (Dwight) Krieg of Batesville;
grandchildren, Abbie and Ben Krieg; one sister, Nancy Pickett
of Versailles; nephew Jeff Pickett and niece Jennifer Smith.
Mr. Monroe was a 1969 graduate of South Ripley High School.
He worked as a machinist for 35 years at Ohio Rod in Versailles
retiring in 2003. He enjoyed coon hunting and fishing.

Betty Sue Spurlock
Betty Sue Spurlock, 62, of Milan, passed away
Thursday, June 4, 2009 at University Hospital in Cincinnati,
Ohio. She was born February 21, 1947 in Whitesburg, Ky., the
daughter of Bennie and Thelma (Holland) Caudill. She married
R.C. Spurlock on February 22, 1969 and he survives.
Other survivors include son, Sandy (Mary) Spurlock of Moores
Hill; sisters, Joyce Ray and Pamela Hatfield, both of Scipio,
and Carolyn Ledbetter of Crothersville; brothers, Donnie,
Larry and Bennie Caudill, all of Seymour, Bob Caudill of Scipio,
and Jack Caudill of Freetown; and two grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Mrs. Spurlock was a former employee of the Aurora Casket Co.

Beatrice "Jines" Steen, 90, of North
Vernon, passed away Friday, June 5, 2009. Funeral services

Bill Annis, 78, of Rescue, California, died peacefully Sunday,

He was born April 29, 1931, in Osgood, Indiana, the son of
Carl and Vivian Annis. He married the former Mary Moats of
Grafton, West Virginia on Aug. 22, 1962.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Mary in 2005; his
mother, Vivian in 2005; his father, Carl, in 1990; and his
older brother Jim in 1996. Survivors include his son Brian,
wife Jayne and grandsons Jacob and Charlie; one brother John
(Donna) of Raleigh, North Carolina; two sisters: Mary Hargitt
(Jim) of Greenfield, Indiana, and Lou Monreal (David) of Lake
Forest, Calif.
Bill graduated from Osgood High School in 1949, and Indiana
University (IU) in 1953. He also had graduate degrees from
Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, and California State
University in Sacramento, California. After graduating from
IU, he served two years in the military, one year of which
was in Korea, and then settled in California. He worked in
sales and investments for 8 years in Fresno, and then worked
for 31 years for the U.S. Government as a contract negotiator
in Sacramento. He retired as a contracting division chief
in 1994. He was also active in the Air Force Reserve for 26
years. He served primarily in air mobility units, was an Aerial
Port Squadron Commander for many years, and retired from the
Reserve as a Lt. Colonel in 1981.
He was a member of the Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church, the
Harding San Juan Masonic Lodge, and the Sacramento Scottish
Rite. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Veterans
of Foreign Wars, and a life member of the Air Force Association,
and the Reserve Officers Association. He was a member of the
Ripley County Historical Society, and a life member of the
Indiana University Alumni Association, and he was active in
the IU Alumni Club of Sacramento.
The memorial service was held Monday, May 18 at 11 a.m. in
the chapel at the Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church, 11427 Fair
Oaks Boulevard, Fair Oaks, CA, 95628. Burial was at the Sacramento
Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, California.

Daniel Thielmann, Jr., 32, of Moores Hill, passed away Wednesday,
May 27, 2009. Funeral services were held Monday, June 1, 2009
at Faith Freewill Baptist Church with burial in the Concord
Cemetery, south of Moores Hill. Sibbett-Moore Funeral Home
in Moores Hill was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may
be given to the Daniel Thielmann, Jr. Memorial Fund for the
childrens education.

Gary Delmas Adkins, 62, of Osgood, passed away Wednesday,
May 27, 2009. Cremation will occur with graveside services
at a later date. Neals Funeral Home in Osgood is in

Helen M. Turner
Helen M. Turner, 67, of Rising Sun, formerly of Versailles,
passed away Friday, May 29, 2009. Funeral services are being
held today, Tuesday, at the Brown-Dawson Funeral Home in Hamilton,
Ohio, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park,
also in Hamilton. Visitation will also be held Tuesday, from
noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Brown-Dawson Funeral Home
is in charge of arrangements.

Anella Julie Coleman, 45, of Osgood, passed away Tuesday,
May 26, 2009. Ms. Coleman is being cremated with private family
