Elizabeth Jackson Raney
Elizabeth Jackson Raney, 94, of Versailles
passed away Friday, July 24, 2009 at the Manderley Health
Care Center in Osgood. She was born near Dabney on May 15,
1915, the daughter of Roy and Lela Kirtley Daugherty. She
was married to Charles Jackson on July 12, 1934 and he preceded
her in death on March 31, 1977. She was married to Ray Raney
on December 6, 1979 and he survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Patty (Herman) Stutler
of Versailles; one step-son, Mike (Bonnie) Raney of Versailles;
two grandchildren, Cynthia Stutler of Amelia, Ohio and Rev.
Kurt (Jean) Stutler of Anderson, South Carolina; four step-grandchildren;
three great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren;
several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She
was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother
Charles Daugherty.
Mrs. Raney was a 1932 graduate of Holton High School. She
was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church for 67 years
and she participated in the church choir for over 60 years.
She had been employed as a school secretary for 40 years serving
18 years at Versailles High School and 22 years at South Ripley
High School.
Funeral services are being held today, Tuesday, at 11 a.m.
at the Versailles Baptist Church with Rev. Kurt Stutler and
Rev. Mike Cantrel officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff
Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time
of services at the church. Memorials may be given to the Versailles
Baptist Church or the church choir. Stratton-Karsteter Funeral
Home in Versailles is handling arrangements.
LaVerne Joyce Ogden McClure
LaVerne Joyce Ogden McClure, 91, of Madison, passed away Wednesday,
July 22, 2009. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 25
at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison with burial

Laverne Palmer
Laverne Palmer, 87, of Middletown, Ohio, formerly of Milan,
passed away Thursday, July 23, 2009 at Middletown. She was
born February 23, 1922 in Ripley County, the daughter of Frank
and Emma (Hall) Schmaltz. She married Darrell E. Palmer on
October 14, 1939 and he preceded her in death on August 31,
1982.
Survivors include daughter, Frances (Calvin) Casson of Middletown,
Ohio; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Rickie McKittrick
(in 2002); three brothers and three sisters.
Mrs. Palmer was a homemaker and a member of the American Legion
Auxiliary of Milan.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 27, at Laws-Carr-Moore
Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Smith officiating. Burial was
in the Cravens Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the hospice
of donors choice.
Mary Jo Raney
Mary Jo Raney, 79, of Versailles passed away Saturday, July
25, 2009 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She
was born at Lake Guega, Ohio on May 23, 1930 the daughter
of Louis Carter and Lula Faye Kinney Everett.
Survivors include one son, Mike (Bonnie) Raney of Versailles;
one daughter, Diana Clark of Arizona; two grandchildren and
two step-grandchildren; three sisters, Nancy Thurston of Las
Cruses, New Mexico, Lydia Cox of Lafayette, and Sharon Hostetler
of Moores Hill. She was preceded in death by her parents,
her brothers Bud and Louis Everett, Jr., and her sisters Carol
Schuknect and Betty Tryon.
Mrs. Raney was retired from the Indiana State Police in Versailles
where she had worked as a secretary and she was a member of
the Hanover Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 29 at 10:30
a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles
with Rev. Don Buck of the First Baptist Church in Osgood.
Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden at Madison.
Visitation will be today, Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Memorials

Ann Thompson Wind
Melonie Ann Thompson Wind, 72, of Markland Pike, Vevay, passed
away Friday, July 17, 2009 at Bethesda North in Cincinnati,
Ohio. She was born May 5, 1937 in Hamilton, Ohio, the daughter
of Ray Linn and Cassie ONeal Thompson. She married James
Wind on December 24, 1985 in Lawrenceburg and he survives.
Other survivors include five sons: Mark Huffman of Cincinnati,
Ohio, Don (Theresa) Huffman of Aurora, Darrin (Tammy) Wind
and Alan Christopher Wind, both of Jacksonville, Fl., and
Todd (Heather) Wind of Loveland, Ohio; two daughters, Lisa
Wind and Angie (George) Overbey, both of Milford, Ohio; brother,
Ronnie Thompson of California; four sisters, Linda Given of
Moores Hill, Diana Thompson of Aurora, Sandy Thacker of Patriot,
and Lois Bowling of St. Petersburg; eight grandchildren and
two great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other
relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mrs. Wind was a 1955 graduate of Moores Hill High School and
1990 graduate of Mt. St. Joseph College in Cincinnati with
a degree in social services. She retired from Frischs
Restaurant as a manager in Lawrenceburg and Florence, KY.
She co-owned and operated Jimel Motel in Lawrenceburg for
11 years. She was a member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church
in Lawrenceburg and the Indiana Wagon Train Association.
Funeral services are being held today, Tuesday, at Haskell
& Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay at 7 p.m., with Rev.
John A. Meyer officiating. Visitation will also be today from
4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the
American Diabetes Association or Shriners Hospital.

Gladys Fugate Combs
Gladys Fugate Combs, 87, of Milan, died Thursday, July 16,
2009 at the waters of Batesville. She was born September 8,
1921 in Hardburly, Kentucky the daughter of James B. and Octavia
(Fugate) Fugate. She married Buford Combs on November 11,
1941 and he preceded her in death on September 5, 1980.
Survivors include one son, Bill (Tina) Combs of Milan; two
brothers, Ernie Fugate of Valley Station, Ky., Raymond Fugate
of Battle Town, Ky.; one sister, Adlea Cornett of Valley Station,
Ky., and one granddaughter, Susan Charles of Milan. She was
preceded in death by her husband and two grandchildren, Tien
Hopkins and Taylor Combs.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 18 at 2 p.m. at
Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan with Pastor Jack Bible
officiating. Burial was in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Moores
Hill.

Wade Preston Narwold
Wade Preston Narwold, 50, of Batesville, passed away Sunday,
July 19, 2009 at Batesville. He was born July 9, 1959, in
Greensburg, the son of Allen and Mary Lou (Linkmeyer) Narwold
and they survive. He married Ann L. (Krieger) Narwold on July
26, 1986 at St. John United Church of Christ (Huntersville),
Batesville and she survives.
Other survivors include parents; children, Barbara Jo "BJ"
and Colt Jacob Narwold, both of Batesville; sister, Amy (Steve)
Siebert of Batesville. He was preceded in death by infant
brother, Roger Narwold.
Mr. Narwold was a farmer. He graduated from Batesville High
School in 1977 and was a member of St. John UCC, and a former
member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Crossroads.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 23 at 1 p.m.
at St. John United Church of Christ (Huntersville), Batesville,
with Rev. David Johnston officiating. Visitation will also
be Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. Burial
will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be given to
the Ripley County Community Foundation or scholarship fund

Gabriel Steven Browning
Gabriel Steven Browning, 18 months, of Osgood, passed away
Friday, July 17, 2009 at the Decatur County Memorial Hospital.
He was born January 4, 2008 in Indianapolis the son of George
E. and Amanda R. (Griffith) Browning.
Three brothers survive him, twin Michael, Amarish and Aarick
Browning; grandparents, George and Ruth Griffith of Osgood
and grandmother, Mary Butts of Osgood and great grandmother,
Anna McCullough of Greensburg.
Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, July 21 at 10
a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Millhousen
with Rev. Rob Hankee officiating. Burial will follow in the
Immaculate Conception Cemetery in the baby circle.

Robert R. Cutter
Robert R. Cutter, 66, of Versailles passed away Sunday, July
19, 2009 at St. Andrews Health Care in Batesville. He was
born at Milan on November 27, 1942 the son of Raymond and
Ruth Linkmeyer Cutter.
Survivors include his wife, Becky Thieman Cutter, two sons
Jeff (Melissa) of Dillsboro, Mark (Michelle) of Versailles,
one daughter Christy (Jim) Longo of Lawrenceburg, four grandchildren,
and one brother Chris Cutter of Georgetown, Kentucky. His
parents preceded him in death.
Mr. Cutter worked for Cummins in Columbus for 35 years. He
was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Dewberry
and a 1960 graduate of Cross Plains High School.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 22, at 10:30
a.m. at the St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Dewberry with
Rev. Ralph Campen officiating. Visitation will be today, Tuesday,
from 5-8 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.

Lois Wilhelm Salmon
Lois Wilhelm Salmon, 94, of Versailles passed away Sunday,
July 12, 2009 at Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She
was born in Russell County, Kentucky on March 27, 1915, the
daughter of Samuel and Kate Antle Browning. She was married
to Everett Wilhelm on March 5, 1932 and later married Richard
Salmon on November 5, 1983, and he preceded her in death on
March 12, 1988.
She is survived by two daughters: Jill Swinney of Osgood and
Sue Meisberger of Versailles; seven grandchildren, 12 great
grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren; two sisters:
Rosemary Turner of Russell Springs, Kentucky and Louise Cruse
of Lincoln, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her parents,
husband, one brother: Bill Browning, one sister: Susan Cruse.
Mrs. Salmon was retired from G.A. Triplett in Osgood, a member
of the Versailles Baptist Church and a member of the Rebekah
Lodge in Osgood.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 16 at 10 a.m.
at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with
Pastor Bob Harting officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff

Charles "Sarge" Chapin Evans, 85, of Milan, passed

Harley Robert Edwin Ludwick
Harley Robert Edwin Ludwick, 73, of Milan, passed away Friday,
July 10, 2009 at Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville. He
was born March 4, 1936 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Ellsworth
and Martha (Vinage) Ludwick. He married Beverly June Felix
in November 1989 and she survives.
Other survivors include three sons: Bob (Jackie) Kissell of
Beaver Creek, Ohio, George (Teresa) Kissell of Elizabethtown,
Ky., and Steve (Sherry) Kissell of Osgood; one daughter: Jacke
(Doug) Reynolds of Osgood; one brother: Roger Ludwick; eight
grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Mr. Ludwick retired as a truck driver for Trans Continental
Trucking Co. in Cincinnati. He was a member of the F&AM
Masonic Lodge in Ohio and served in the Ohio National Guard
Army.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

F. Kash
John F. Kash, 71, of Milan, passed away at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday,
June 30, 2009 at his home.
He was born on October 23, 1937 to Caleb and Maud (Sebastian)
Kash at their home in Sunman, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lawrence;
sister-in-law, Patricia; and his niece, Pamela.
He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Dorine; one
sister, Lena Czimbal (Larry) of Muncie, Ind; two brothers,
Leonard (Beverly) Kash and James (Eula) Kash of Milan; stepchildren,
Linda (Larry) Weaver of Batesville, Donna (Frank) Ingram of
Rockport, Ind., Brenda (Jerry) Johnson of Milan, Mark (Luann)
Konradi of Milan, Randy Konradi of Dover, and Lisa (Steve)
Williamson of Sunman; grandchildren, Chris (Linda) Campbell,
Craig Campbell, Lori Campbell-Kennedy, Rusty (Christin) Weaver,
Lydia Weaver of Florida, Adam Weaver of Batesville, Tonya
Ingram of Indianapolis, Ronda (Cliff) Kennedy of Rockport,
Ind., Tracy Johnson-Mullikin of Osgood, Liz (Paul) Roell of
Milan, Nicholas (Angela) Johnson, of Milan, Danielle Konradi
of Osgood, Chad and Brandon Konradi of Milan, and Abby Williamson
of Sunman; seven nieces, four nephews, and 15 great-grandchildren.
John was an active member of the Army Reserves before going
to work at Philco in Connersville for 1 1/2 years, working
with sheet metal. He worked for Benefit Company while he lived
with his sister, Lena, for 8 years in Cincinnati. Next he
traveled with Armco Steel for 1 1/2 years to different towns
across the country. Once he finished with Armco, he worked
in cement finishing for 26 years. He worked for Henry Rose
Well Drilling for 10 years. John finished his career working
in cement finishing for Force Construction until he retired
due to throat cancer in 1990. He married his wife Dorine,
on June 26, 1983.
John has been an active Milan Legion Post 235 member for 42
years. John loved flying, hunting, his hunting dogs, fishing,
going to auctions, flea markets, teaching his young neighbors
many things and tinkering with what others may think of as
junk, but to him they were treasures. John was proud to be
a Registered Democrat, and wanted everyone to know it!
The funeral service was held July 3 at the funeral home. Rev.
Harris Long, pastor of First Baptist Church of Milan, officiated.
Burial was in Craven Cemetery in Milan.
Pallbearers were members of the Milan American Legion, Post
#235.

Matthew Paul "Skinny" McIntosh
Matthew Paul "Skinny" McIntosh, 19, of Moores Hill,
passed away Sunday, July 5, 2009 at the University Hospital
in Cincinnati. He was born Aug. 1, 1989 in Lawrenceburg, the
son of Mark and Katrina McIntosh.
Survivors include parents; sister, Mindy, at home; one brother,
Christopher, of Shelbyville; maternal grandfather, Roger (Rita)
Marquardt of Napoleon; paternal grandmother, Ruby June McIntosh
of Dillsboro; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
His paternal grandfather, Alvin McIntosh and two uncles preceded
him in death.
Matthew graduated from South Dearborn High School in 2008.
He was the drummer in a band called "Strange on Display"
with his two best friends, Jimmy Wenstrup and Mike Dittmer.
He was an active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Greendale.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 10, at 11 a.m.
at Emanuel Lutheran Church (570 North Sheldon St.) in Greendale.
Visitation will be Thursday, July 9 from 5-8 p.m. at the church
with a time for remembrance by his friends at 8 p.m. Visitation

Seth William Stegemoller, three months old of Olean passed
away Saturday, July 4, 2009 at his home. He was born at Batesville
on March 30, 2009.
Survivors include his parents Phillip and Chloe Schmidt Stegemoller
of Olean and Nathan Woods of Versailles; four brothers Justin
Stegemoller, Michael, Anthony, and Charlie Woods; one sister
Makenzie Stegemoller; grandparents John and Malinda Stegemoller
of Canaan, David and Dawn Corney of Austin, Texas, Tim and
Sharon Woods of Versailles, and Mike and Anita Schmidt of
Napoleon; great-grandparents Harold and Bea Stegemoller of
Versailles, Barbara Pilz of Napoleon, Audrey Woods of Batesville,
Betty Bishop of Canaan; and Mr. and Mrs. Charles and Jewell
Schmidt of Milan.

Helyn Hamilton Bishop
Helyn Hamilton Bishop, Canaan, passed away Friday, July 3,
2009 at Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison. She
was the daughter of Arnold and Hallie Neal Hamilton. She married
Alois Bishop and he preceded her in death on October 4, 1991.
Survivors include daughter, Betty Bishop Copeland of Canaan;
granddaughter, Nanci Copeland (Joe) Liles of Canaan; several
nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death
by her parents, husband, son-in-law, LaVant Copeland, passed
away Dec. 7, 1993; brothers, Clifford, Less and Press Hamilton;
and infant sister, Louise Cathryn Hamilton.
Mrs. Bishop graduated from Hanover College in 1963 and from
Indiana University (Bloomington) in 1967. She received her
Principals License from IU Bloomington in 1974. She
began her professional career at Southwestern Elementary School
at Hanover and later taught at Rykers Ridge Elementary for
several years, then was principal at Canaan Elementary School
in Canaan.
Helyn was active in the Indian-Kentuck Baptist Church where
she taught Sunday school. She was the cofounder of the Canaan
Restoration Council, member of the original board of directors
that organized the Canaan Water Company. She served as treasurer
for the Jefferson Co. Retired Teachers Association for
several years and held membership with Delta Kappa Gamma,
Alpha Delta Kappa, Indiana Association of Elementary and Middle
School Principals, Hanover College Alumni Association, Indiana
University Alumni Association, Indiana Retired Teachers
Association, Historic Madison, Inc., Jefferson Co. Historical
Society and the Canaan Cemetery Association.
Funeral services are being held today, Tuesday, at 7 p.m.
with Reverend Darrell James officiating at the Morgan &
Nay Funeral Centre, in Madison. A public graveside ceremony
will be conducted on Wednesday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at the
Canaan Cemetery in Canaan. Visitation is being held today,

Verna Smith
Verna Smith, 78, of Milan, passed away Wednesday, July 1,
2009 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was
born on September 22, 1930 in Fount, Kentucky, the daughter
of Arthur and Mary (Hammons) Swafford. She married Elmer Smith
on October 9, 1948 and he survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, Doris (Mark) Cook
of Sunman, Darlene (Timothy) Aust of Holland, PA, and Arlene
(Victor) Lee of Cortlandt Manor, NY; three brothers, Marvin
Swafford of Ohio, Ernest Swafford of Illinois, and Earl Swafford
of Kentucky; three sisters, Lola Booher and Juanita Hinkle,
both of Ohio, and Ethel Smith, of Kentucky; grandchildren:
Dana (Scott) Burton, Mitchell and Madeline Lee, Caroline Aust
and Jason Cook. She was preceded in death by brothers, Arthur
and Creed Swafford, and sisters, Viola Anderson and Lena Randall.
Mrs. Smith was a former employee of Delaney Wood Heel Factory
at Versailles and the US Shoe Factory at Osgood. She was a
member of the Missionary Baptist Church at Fount, Ky.

Funeral Home in Milan with Shawn McMullen officiating. Burial

Edward Johnson, Sr.
Edward Johnson, Sr., 66, of Versailles, passed away, Saturday,
July 4, 2009 at Kings Daughters Hospital. He was
born April 16, 1943, in Hazard, Ky., the son of Kermit and
Lula (Begley) Johnson, Sr. He married Kay (Kelly) Johnson
and she survives.
Other survivors include son, Edward Johnson, Jr., of Versailles;
daughter, Debbie Johnson of Versailles; brothers, Kermit (Susie)
Johnson of Milan, Steve (Kim) Mensley of Colony, Texas, Jim
(Kim) Block and Robert Block, both of Milan; sisters, Thelma
Weiss of Vanwert, Ohio and Pat (Don) Cleary of Aurora; four
grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in
death by two brothers- Ted and Lee Johnson, one sister- Rella
Morris, and one grandchild- Jacob Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was a retired concrete construction worker. He
was a member of the Coonhunters Lodge.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 8, at 11 a.m.
at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home in Milan with Tom Holt officiating.
Burial will be in the Mt. Sinai Cemetery. Visitation is being
