Indians overwhelm Lancers 66-0
on MHS senior recognition night

Gary Franklin, Sports Writer

On Friday night, October 9, the Milan Indians played the bad host to the visiting Edinburgh Lancer football team, earning a 66-0 victory.
Conditions for the game included mud and the muck of a rain drenched newly resurfaced football field, along with disgusting drizzle that more closely resembled an all out rain shower at times.
The evening began with the introduction of senior members of the Milan High School football team, their managers and cheerleaders, the cross country runners, the dance team and band members along with their parents and escorts.
Up to this game, the tribe had only fallen to the non-conference Batesville Bulldogs by a score of 19-28 and their conference opponent, the Indian Creek Braves, 13-16.
Indians vs Lancers
As indicated by the final score, this nights battle with Edinburgh was never in doubt as the Indian offense scored early and often throughout the game. While on the field, the MHS defense limited the progress by the Lancers offensive unit to minimal gains.
First period 20-0
Scoring for Milan in the first quarter came as the result of a 36 yard run by senior Travis Pennington (33) at the 8:20 mark for 6-0. Junior Cory Jewett (45), added a TD @ the 4:29 mark with his 2 yard run, which was coupled to a Travis Pennington conversion to lead 14-0. With 10 seconds remaining in the quarter, senior Zach Turner (24) carried the ball into the end zone on a 9 yard run to take the score to 20-0 Milan.
Second period 39-0
Senior Travis Penington (33) initiated the scoring in the second period at 9:49 with a 10 yard run for the TD and a 26-0 lead. At 5:54, senior quarterback Grayson Miller (14) completed a 16 yard pass to senior receiver Cody Marcee (3) for the TD, followed by a Pennington (33) PAT elevating the tribe's edge to 33-0. With 2:11 remaining before the halftime break, Pennington (33) took a 5 yard run into the end zone to bring the halftime score to Milan 39-0 Edinburgh.
Third period 53-0
Indian sophomore Cory Strunk (23) opened the tribe's third period scoring with a 30 yard run for the touchdown at the 12:00 mark of period for 45-0. Strunk struck again at 9:59 for a second TD run, this one for 42 yards, followed by a Pennington (33) kick and the lead of 53-0.
Period four 66-0
The fourth quarter would bring few surprises as the tribe again held solid and added points to their total. At 9:56 in the fourth, Strunk (23) put seven on the board for Milan with his 24 yard run and the PAT to follow.
With the score at Milan 59-0, Dennis Roark carried the ball into the end zone on an eight yard run to drive the final nail in the Lancer coffin, ending the game with a score of 66-0.
The Indians will travel to Triton Central to face their final foe of regular season action on Friday, October 16, with an anticipated game kickoff time of 7 p.m.
