Marie
Garteman
Marie Garteman, 95, of Milan, passed away Wednesday, November
18, 2009 at Ripley Crossing at Milan. She was born March 23,
1914 near Prattsburg in Ripley County, the daughter of Ben and
Anna (Volz) Puente. She married Fred Garteman in 1930 and he
preceded her in death in November of 1960.
Survivors include daughters Johanne Graham, Carolyn (Lawrence)
Cutter, and Judy (Carl Chipper) Cline, all of Milan; grandchildren
Debbie Busching, Michelle and Doug Graham, Trace Cutter, Robin
Laub, Melissa Hertsenberg and Monica Widener; 12 great grandchildren
and three great great grandchildren.
Mrs. Garteman was a homemaker and retired after 26 years working
at Haessigs Market. She was a member of the St. Pius Catholic
Church and the St. Pius Altar Society.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 21 at St. Pius Catholic
Church, north of Milan with Father Frank Eckstein officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be given to
the Milan Fire Department or St. Pius Altar Society. Laws-Carr-Moore
Funeral Home in Milan was in charge of arrangements.
Dale L. Spangler
Dale L. Spangler, 83, of Dillsboro, passed away Friday, November
20, 2009 at Dearborn County Hospital. He was born July 18, 1926,
the son of George and Helen Roder Spangler. He married Martha
Banes on June 14, 1952.
Surviving are daughters Kimberly of Dillsboro, Robyn (William)
Epstein of Palos Verdes, CA; and a grandson, Alex Epstein. He
was preceded in death by his parents and brother Bob Spangler.
Mr. Spangler graduated from Dillsboro High School in 1944. He
served his country during World War II in the US Army as a Sergeant
earning a Bronze Star for his accomplishments in the Philippines.
He worked at Joseph E. Seagram & Sons as a distiller for
35 years. He won a prize for his 412 pound pumpkin at the Versailles
Pumpkin Show in 1982.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 25, at 11 a.m.
at Filter-DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro. Burial will be
in the Oakdale Cemetery with full military rites. Visitation
with the family will be Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral
home. Memorials may be given to the Dillsboro Emergency Unit

Richard "Scratch" Benning
Richard "Scratch" Benning, 64, of Farmers Retreat,
passed away Sunday, November 22, 2009 at his residence. He was
born September 22, 1945, at his residence. His parents were
Harland Benning and Esther Grelle Benning. He married Vera Fields
on April 2, 1977 and she survives.
Other survivors include children Michael (Karen) Lawhorn of
Logan, Margaret"Beth" (Darrell) Weaver of Aurora,
Pamela Sue (David) Davies of Dillsboro, Amy Marie (Carl) Fryman
of Farmers Retreat, Kimberly Renee Calwell of Aurora and Heather
Ann Rump of Farmers Retreat; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren;
one brother Dean Benning of Farmers Retreat. He was preceded
in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be Saturday, November 28, at 11 a.m. at
St. Johns Lutheran Church in Farmers Retreat with burial
in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, November
27, from 5-8 p.m. at Filter-DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro.
Memorials may be given to the Milan VFW, Hospice of Dearborn
County or the Dillsboro American Legion. Filter-DeVries Funeral

Helen M. Daugherty
Helen M. Daugherty, 95, of Columbus, formerly of Holton, passed
away Friday, November 20, 2009 at the Silver Oaks Health Center
in Columbus. She was born near Holton on June 13, 1914 the daughter
of Fred and Anna Belle Davis Koelmel. She was married to Rev.
Jacob Daugherty on August 3, 1935 and he preceded her in death
on March 3, 1955.
Survivors include one daughter Laura Ann (James) Payer of Columbus;
three sons Fred (Bobbi) Daugherty of Bensalem, Pennsylvania,
Hugh (Janet) Daugherty of Columbus, and William (Nancy) Daugherty
of Fort Wayne; six grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and
seven great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by
her parents, her stepson Joe Daugherty, grandchildren Ruth Elizabeth
Daugherty, David Daugherty, and Stephanie DeSilva, step grandson
Louis Daugherty, her brothers Ted and Norman Koelmel, and her
sisters Ida Bostic, Margaret Bostic, Martha Benham, Florence
Ellis, and Mildred Swinney.
Mrs. Daugherty was a 65-year member of the Hopewell Baptist
Church where she taught Sunday school and participated in the
ABWM. She was also active at the North Vernon Senior Center.
She was a former employee of Tony Rehags egg processing
plant at Holton and had been a cook at the White Pine Restaurant
in Versailles. Mrs. Daugherty had also worked as an in home
caregiver in Indianapolis.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 25 at 11
a.m. at the Hopewell Baptist Church with Rev. David Shivers
officiating. Burial will be in the Otter Creek Cemetery at Nebraska.
Visitation is being held today, Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the
Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10 a.m.
until time of services Wednesday at the church. Memorials may
be given to the Hopewell building fund in care of the funeral

Gabrielle Nolte Stewart Rhodes
Tiffany Gabrielle Nolte Stewart Rhodes, 41, of Lancaster, CA,
formerly of Madison and Versailles, passed away Tuesday, November
3, 2009 in Los Angeles, CA. She was born September 28, 1968
in Louisville, KY, the daughter of Dennis L. Nolte and Mary
G. Payne Everman. She married James Lyle Rhodes, Sr. and he
preceded her in death.
Survivors include her mother and stepfather: Mary G. Payne and
Paul Everman of Versailles; daughter: Alissa Paige Stewart of
Versailles; son: James Lyle Rhodes, Jr., of Lancaster, CA; maternal
grandmother: Mary Payne of North Vernon; sister: Lisa Carole
(Jeffrey) Naville of Floyds Knobs; brother: Michael Troy Nolte
and companion Spencer Turner of North Carolina; several nieces,
nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives. She was
preceded in death by her father: Dennis L. Nolte on Feb. 16,
2004; paternal grandparents: Robert J. and Cornelia "Connie"
Negley Nolte; maternal grandfather: Edward Gerald Payne; and
her husband.
Mrs. Rhodes was raised in Greenville and resided her summers
in Madison. She was a member of the St. Marys of Navilleton
in Floyds Knobs.
Funeral services were held Sunday, November 15 at Morgan &
Nay Funeral Centre in Madison with Rev. John A. Meyer officiating.
Burial was in the St. Magdalene Cemetery in Madison. Rosary
services were held on Saturday. Memorials may be given to the

Elizabeth A. (Taulbee) Carf
Elizabeth A. (Taulbee) Carf, 54, of Owensboro, passed away Wednesday,
November 11, 2009, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was
born June 24, 1955, in Worthville, Ky., the daughter of the
late James Taulbee and Geneva Holland Taulbee.
Survivors include best friend: Cindy Gilmore of Owensboro, Ky.;
sons: Charles (Linda) Carf, Jr. of Owensboro, Ky., and James
Carf of Rising Sun; daughter: Frankie (Steve) Bartlett of Rockport;
eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brothers: Raymond,
James, Vernon, Scott, Mark, John, Don and Earl Taulbee; and
sisters: Lola Goodson, Betty Pettit, Marie Day and Jessie Smith.
Ms. Carf was a housewife and a member of the Baptist faith.

Samantha Julia Ryden, 43, of Moores Hill, passed away Tuesday,

Linkmeyer
Charles Linkmeyer, 82, of Versailles, formerly of Friendship,
passed away Saturday, November 7, 2009 at the Kings Daughters
Hospital in Madison. He was born at North Vernon on December
28, 1926 the son of Clemence and Ruth Sprickerhoff Linkmeyer.
He was married to Pauline Kuhlman on June 24, 1950 and she survives.
Other survivors include one son Ron (Janet) Linkmeyer of Friendship;
one daughter Teresa (Mark) Fender of Bloomington; three grandchildren
Holli (Adam) Gieb of Bloomington, Eric Adams of Farmers Retreat,
and Jodi Linkmeyer of San Antonio, Texas; three great-grandchildren.
His parents and his sister Marie Benham preceded him in death.
Mr. Linkmeyer was an Army veteran of WWII where he was a Tec-5
with the 63rd Gun Battalion. He received the Victory Medal,
Army of Occupied Japan Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre
Ribbon. He was a lifetime member of St. Johns Lutheran
Church at Farmers Retreat, a former member of the Friendship
Fire Department, and a member of the Brown Township American
Legion. Mr. Linkmeyer worked at Jefferson Proving Ground as
a steam boiler operator and pipe fitter, retiring in 1984.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 11 at 11 a.m.
at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Farmers Retreat
with Pastor Richard Wilkie officiating. Burial will be in the
church cemetery with military rites by the Brown Township American
Legion. Visitation is today, Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter

Wilma Metcalf
Wilma Metcalf, 78, of Versailles, passed away Sunday, November
8, 2009 at the Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg. She
was born at Addyston, Ohio, on January 6, 1931, the daughter
of Elmer and Lillian Crouch McMurray. She was married to Keith
Metcalf on January 20, 1954 and he preceded her in death on
June 4, 1995.
Survivors include one daughter, Gina Foster of Arizona; five
sisters, Della (John) McAdams of Moores Hill, Shirley (Dan)
Betler of Florida, Annette (Kenny) Collins of Delaware, Mary
(Don) Triplett of Ohio, and Carolyn (Gary) DeWitt of Versailles;
four brothers, Doug McMurray, Melvin McMurray, and Elmer McMurray,
Jr., all of Lawrenceburg and Vernon Robert McMurray of Versailles.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Stanley,
and sisters Edith and Dolly.
Mrs. Metcalf was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 12 at the Stratton-Karsteter
Funeral Home in Versailles with Dale Day officiating. Burial
will be in the Craven Cemetery at Milan. Visitation will also
be Thursday from 1 p.m. until time of services. Memorials may

Charles Donald "Sarge" Webster
Charles Donald "Sarge" Webster, 73, of Versailles,
passed away Saturday, November 7, 2009 at his home. He was born
May 14, 1936 in Williamstown, Kentucky, the son of Charles Franklin
Webster and Melvina Jump Lotshaw. He married Lorna Lee Webster
on May 7, 1969 in Muldraugh, Kentucky and she survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Danny (Sharon) Webster of
Ozark, AL, and Donny (Barbie) Webster of Versailles; one daughter,
Shawnda (Paul) Zurline of Versailles; eight grandchildren; four
great grandchildren; one brother, Cecil Lotshaw of New York;
several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded
in death by his parents; his aunt and uncle who raised him:
Eura Dale and Cecil Jump; and his brother, William Webster passed
away in 1981.
Mr. Webster graduated in 1955 from Harrison High School. He
was inducted into the United States Army in March 1959 at Fort
Knox, Kentucky.
After retiring from the Army he moved to Versailles and became
the manager of the Gaslight Trailer Court from 1982-1998. Mr.
Webster was of the Methodist faith.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 14, at 1 p.m.
at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison with Bro.
Clifton Hartley officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview
Memorial Gardens near Madison. Visitation will also be Saturday
from 11 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home. Full
military honors will be conducted by the Fort Knox Ceremonial
Unit and Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion.

Pamela Jean Abner
Pamela Jean Abner, 45, formerly of New Marion, passed away Monday,
November 2, 2009 at her residence in Creston, West Virginia.
She was the daughter of Gilbert Abner and Dottie Lou Abner.
Survivors include long time partner, Buck Smith; mother, Dottie
Abner and long time partner, John W. Jones, Jr. of Shinnston,
WV; two daughters: Ryan Jones of Fairmont, WV and Destiny Jones
of Creston, WV; two brothers: Jeff (Teri) Abner of Vermillion,
OH, and Mike (Lyn) Abner of Lorain, OH; one sister: Stefanie
(Cliff) Winters of Osgood; several nieces and nephews and other
family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father,
Gilbert Abner; one infant sister and one infant granddaughter.
Ms. Abner was a CNA for 20 years and most recently employed
at San Bridge Nursing Home in Parkersburg, WV.
A private memorial is being planned for family. Arrangements

John M. Stasa
John M. Stasa, 43, of Dillsboro, passed away Saturday, November
7, 2009 at Dearborn County Hospital. He was born April 4, 1966
in Lansing, MI, the son of Gerald Stasa and Rosemary Kelly Stasa.
On July 25, 1998 he married Lorena Ehle and she survives.
Other survivors include two children, Ryan Frazier, and Paul
Ehle, both living at home. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 11, at 4 p.m. at
Cedars of Lebanon Church in Dillsboro, with Pastor Charles Hill
officiating. Visitation is being held today, Tuesday from 5-8

Kenny Adams
Kenny Adams, 66, of Versailles passed away Thursday, November
5, 2009 at the Kentuckiana Medical Center in Clarksville. He
was born near Napoleon on February 7, 1943 the son of Clarence
and Jeanette Farrell Adams. He was married to Dottie Barrett
on May 18, 1963 and she survives.
Other survivors include two daughters Angie (Don) Eldridge of
Whitestown and Amy (Barry) Noah of West Lafayette; three grandchildren
Cody and Chase Eldridge and Katie Noah; one brother Don Adams
of Milton, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents,
and his brother Ed.
Mr. Adams was a 1961 graduate of Versailles High School. He
was a 35-year employee of Cummins working in Columbus and Madison
as a machinist and union steward, retiring in 1997. He was a
member of the Versailles Masonic Lodge.
Funeral services were held Monday, November 9 at the Stratton-Karsteter
Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. David Shivers of the Hopewell
Baptist Church officiating. The Versailles Masonic Lodge conducted
services on Sunday evening at the funeral home. Burial was in
the Grandview Memorial Gardens near Madison. Memorials may be
given to the Kentuckiana Medical Center in care of the funeral
home.

Mary Elizabeth Kluemper, 85, of Oldenburg, passed away Saturday,
November 7, 2009. Funeral services are being held today, Tuesday

Goldie
"Grace" Dunbar
Goldie "Grace' Dunbar, 96, formerly of Osgood, passed away
Friday, October 30, 2009 at Thornton Terrace in Hanover. She
was born April 10, 1913 in Ripley County, the daughter of George
and Goldie Newman Michel. She married Eugene Dunbar on June
24, 1933 and he preceded her in death August of 1977.
Survivors include son: Kenneth Eugene (Mary Lou) Dunbar of Madison;
two grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by five brothers: Harold, Gilbert, Leslie, Norman and
Melvin Michel; one sister Minola Dunbar.
Mrs. Dunbar was a member of Delaware United Methodist Church.
She had served as a LPN doing private duty nursing in the Ripley
County area, for Dearborn County Hospital of Lawrenceburg, and
Margaret Mary Hospital of Batesville and had served as a nurse
for the Versailles State Park and was associated with the Ripley
County Red Cross. She was a past member of the Milan Chapter
of Eastern Star.
Visitation is being held today, Tuesday at Neal's Funeral Home
in Osgood, from 5-8 p.m. with Eastern Star services beginning
at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 4
at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with burial in the Mudpike Cemetery
near Osgood. Memorials may be given to the Delaware United Methodist
Church or Mudpike Cemetery in care of the funeral home. Neals

Ralph St. John
Ralph St. John, 72, of Versailles passed away Saturday, October
31, 2009 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville.
He was born at Burning Springs, Kentucky on June 9, 1937 the
son of Everett and Myrtle Robinson St. John. He was married
to Betty Noel on April 5, 2000 and she survives.
Other survivors include one son Ralph (Mary) St. John, Jr. of
Villa Hills, Kentucky; one daughter Wendy (Willie) Kocher of
Harrison, Ohio; four grandchildren; his mother-in-law Mary Folsom
of Versailles; one stepdaughter Carol Fugate of Osgood; one
sister Geneva Grubbs of Harrison, Ohio; four brothers Ronnie
St. John and Raymond St. John both of West Harrison, Fred St.
John of Harrison, Ohio, and E.J. St. John of Berea, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Glenn.
Mr. St. John was employed with Nine West US Shoe in Harrison,
Ohio and Osgood from 1957 until his retirement in 2000. He was
a member of the Versailles Lions Club and Osgood F&AM #603.
Masonic services are being held today, Tuesday, at the Stratton-Karsteter
Funeral Home in Versailles, beginning at 12 p.m. followed by
funeral services with Rev. Russell Stephens of the Tanglewood
Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Tanglewood
Cemetery. Visitation will also be today from 10 a.m. until time
of services at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the
Versailles Lions Club or the Osgood Masonic Lodge in care of

Ellen E. Conaway
Ellen E. Conaway, 89, of Dillsboro, died Tuesday, Oct 27, 2009
at The Waters of Dillsboro, Ross Manor. She was born July 4,
1920 in Middleburg, NY, the daughter of Neil Quackenbush and
Emily R. Voelker Quackenbush. On Feb 18, 1946 she married Preston
Conaway and he survives.
Survivors include two sons, Robert (Bretta) Conaway, of Dallas,
Texas, and Edward Conaway, of Portland, OR; two grandchildren,
Beth Parker, and Karen Armstrong; seven great grandchildren;
one sister, Rose Frangella, of Coeymans, NY. She was preceded
in death by one brother, Victor Quackenbush.
Mrs. Conaway graduated from East Islip, Long Island, NY High
School in 1938, and from Cornell University in 1942 with a degree
in Education. She taught Home Economics in grades 7-12 in Dillsboro,
Holton, and South Ripley, for 35 plus years. Ellen was an active
member of Dillsboro United Methodist Church, where she taught
Sunday school and was active in the Women's Society. She
knitted caps and booties for newborn babies at Dearborn County
Hospital and was active as a Girl Scout Counselor.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. at Filter-DeVries
Funeral Home in Dillsboro. Memorials may be given to the Dillsboro
Food Pantry. Filter-DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro was in
charge of arrangements.
June M. Veldhaus
June M. Veldhaus, 80, of Milan, passed away Sunday, November
1, 2009, at Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville.
She was born June 22, 1929 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter
of Ray and Florence (Guelker) Swisshelm. She married Gilbert
A. Veldhaus on April 17, 1953 and he preceded her in death on
December 3, 1996.
Survivors include son: Tony (Teresa) Veldhaus of Milan; daughter:
Debbi (Gary) Walker of Ft. Walton Beech, FL; nine grandchildren
and three great grandchildren; and sister Norma Strickland of
Maderia, Ohio.
Mrs. Veldhaus was retired from Hillenbrand Industries and a
member of the St. Pius Catholic Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m. at
St. Pius Catholic Church, north of Milan with Father Frank Eckstein
officiating with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation
will be held Wednesday, Nov. 4 from 6-8 p.m. at Laws-Carr-Moore
Funeral Home in Milan with Rosary services at 5:45 p.m. Memorials

Phillip Warren Fultz
Phillip Warren Fultz, 70, of North Vernon, passed away on Thursday,
October 29, 2009 at his residence. He was born July 4, 1939,
in Columbus, the son of Claude Fultz and Mary Hadley Fultz Miller.
He married Mossie Newman Fultz on August 26, 1978 in Jennings
County and she survives.
Other survivors include two sons: Dewey Holman, of Madison and
James (Paula) Holman of Versailles; three daughters: Lisa Saylor
of Columbus, Christy (J.D.) Fox of Hurst, TX, and Kathy (Jeff)
Burton of North Vernon; one brother Earl Miller of Edinburg;
16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by his parents and two sisters: Virginia L. Miller
Menser and Marilyn Everroad.
Mr. Fultz worked as a truck driver and dispatcher for the Johnson
Oil Company in Columbus for 42 years, retiring in 2000. He was
a volunteer fireman for about 15 years and was Deputy Town Marshal
for 22 years in Clifford, Indiana. He was a 1956 graduate of
Clifford High School. He was a lifelong member of Clifford Baptist
Church.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 2 at the Dove-Sharp
& Rudicel Funeral Home with Rev. Butch Wooddell officiating.
Memorials may be given to the Hospice of Jennings County through
the funeral home. Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North
Vernon was in charge of arrangements.
Helen L. Transier
Helen L. Transier, 86, of Dillsboro, passed away Friday, October
30, 2009 at The Waters of Dillsboro. She was born April 23,
1923 in Dearborn County, the daughter of Milton Eckler and Lena
Boyd Eckler. Her husband, Herman Transier preceded her in death,
in 1968.
Survivors include two sons, David (Judy) Transier of Versailles,
and Steven (Melissa) Transier of Batesville; one daughter Sharon
(Larry) Alcorn of Cincinnati; three grandchildren; six great
grandchildren; and four step grandchildren. A daughter, Cherri
Transier, and a brother, Leroy Eckler, also preceded her in
death.
Mrs. Transier was a graduate of Dillsboro High School in 1941.
Helen was a homemaker, and a long time member of the Delaware
United Methodist Church.
Visitation and funeral services will be private for the family
only. Burial will be in the Washington Cemetery in Elrod. Memorials
may be given to the Dillsboro Life Squad. Arrangements are being
handled by Filter-DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro.
Edith Bell Patton
Edith Bell Patton, 85, of Sunman, passed away Friday, October
30, 2009 at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was born
on January 8, 1924 in Knifley, KY, the daughter of Samuel and
Goldie (Harrison) Bottom. She was married to Rev. Earl Patton.
Survivors include daughters: Karen (Bill) Lewis of Sunman, and
Debbie (Charlie) Miller of Milan; three grandchildren: Michelle
Swanson, Amy Fryman-Jacobs, and Marina Saldana; three great
grandchildren: Holly, Hannah, Trent Fryman; and several nieces,
nephews and friends.
Mrs. Patton was a homemaker and a member of the Grace Baptist
Church in Milan.
Funeral services are being held today, Tuesday, at 11 a.m. at
Grace Baptist Church in Milan with Pastor Charlie Miller officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Paul Methodist Cemetery in Sunman.
Memorials may be given to the Grace Baptist Church. Laws-Carr-Moore
Funeral Home in Milan is in charge of arrangements.
