Milan Indian boys basketball season opens on road at Hauser with game two at North Decatur

The Milan Indian boys basketball teams opened their ’09-’10 “Hoops-a –Mania” journey on the road at Hauser High School on Tuesday night, November 24, against the Jets. A report from new Head Basketball Coach Josh Blankinship outlining his team's opening night performance and production disclosed the following.

"The Indian boys varsity team had a great all around effort, trailing at halftime 29-33, stated Coach Josh Blankinship, “We came out strong in the third quarter and cut their lead to two points, but with three minutes to go in the third, the Jets mounted a 15-0 run.” At the game's conclusion, the tribe came out short to the final score of Milan 54-74 Hauser.
Scoring for the Indian varsity were: Grayson Miller and Brandon Withers with 15 points each, Ethan Voss added seven and Sean Laub five. Sophomores John Herzog and Kurtis Kimla each chipped in four points, while seniors Alex Walter and Michael Brandes added two apiece for Milan’s game total of 54 points.

The Indian boys JV team, behind the direction of Coach Mike Myers also fell just shy in their opener against the Hauser Jets. Coach Myers reports, “This team battled all night, led at halftime, but came up short at game's end, falling to Hauser 35-40.
Jake White led the JV teams scoring with 12 points. Zack Lewis’ effort added nine. Nick Walter scored six and Braden Voss added four while Nick Ryan and Derek Hornberger each scored a deuce leading to the JV’s 35 point scoring total in their season opener.

vs ND Chargers
The Milan Indian boys JV team fell short in their Saturday November 28, game played against the Chargers at North Decatur HS. Not short on guts and desire, but on the scoreboards final tally as ND led concluding a second overtime period 58-51.
JV First Quarter,
Milan 16-8 ND
"Putting you courtside"
As JV play unfolded, Zach Lewis (12) opened the game's scoring with back to back downtown 3's to give Milan a quick 6-0 lead. ND's John Hammersmith responded with a trey, followed by a 3 point delivery from Indian Jake White (32).
John Kirchoff delivered a FG for the Chargers, answered by an Indian Nick Walter (34) FG. ND's Kirchoff made one of two FT attempts followed by Indian Braden Voss (10) delivery of a three pointer.
Charger Paul Badgley sank a pair of FT's from the charity stripe, followed by Indian Nick Ryan's (20) pair of FT makes to end the first quarter scoring, Milan 16-8 over North Decatur.
JV Second Quarter, Milan 22-22 ND
The Chargers opened second quarter action scoring the first six points off a FT by Jesse Elsner, an old fashioned three point play conversion by Andrew Means and a FG by Kevin Geis.. Indian Derek Hornberger (44) netted a FG for the tribe that was quickly capped by the FG of Charger Badgley.
Indian Hornberger (44) added yet another FG coupled with a teammate Joey Davis (14) FG. ND's Badgley answered with a FG. Chargers Ben Harrison added a pair of FT's and teammate Means closed the quarter's scoring at the halftime break with the game knotted at 22.
JV Third Quarter, Milan 28-26 ND
The Chargers took the lead with a FG by Hammersmith but a Indian Braden Voss (10) FG knotted the game at 24. Indian teammate Nick Walter (34) added a FG followed by another Voss (10) FG to go up 28-24. Charger Badgley scored a FG at the horn to end the third with the Indians leading 28-26 over the Chargers.
JV Fourth Quarter, Milan 41-41 ND
Indian scores back to back by Voss (10) and White (32) moved them to a six point edge. Charger Badgley delivered a three pointer, followed by a FG by Indian Ryan (20) and another by ND's Badgley.
Charger Elsner cut into the tribe's lead with his connection on two FT offerings followed by a FG by teammate Means. Indian White (32) made one of his two charity stripe offerings and Charger Badgley connected on a pair of FT's to knot the game at 37.
Indian White (32) regained the lead for the tribe with a pair of FT makes but Charger Badgley again knotted the game with his FG at 39.
Indian Voss (10) capitolized on a pair of FT offerings with just over seven seconds remaining in regulation but Charger Means managed to draw a foul to go to the charity stripe where he tied the game with his two FT makes at the end of regulation play at 41.
JV Overtime Period One, Milan 50-50 ND
The Indians found their first fatality falling via the whistle at the 2:18 mark in the first overtime period as Derek Hornberger (44) was assessed his fifth foul. Charger Ben Harrison scored both FT shots for the lead. Charger Elsner drew his fifth foul of the game at 2:04. Indian White (32) renewed the tribe's hopes with a trey and the lead at 44-43.
Charger Means scored a pair of FT's to put ND back on top. By way of the whistle, Milan lost a second player, Jake White (32) to a called fifth foul, which left the Indians with only a four man team to wage the rest of the battle.
Charger Badgley added a point via the charity stripe offering. Badgley added another FT of two offerings to give ND a three point lead of 47-44.
With less than 16 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, Charger Means added a pair of FT's to advance their edge to five points and a seemingly "lights out" situation for the tribe, especially operating with a four man team.
At just under 10 seconds, Indian Voss (10) nailed a long range trey followed by a quick Indian foul to send Charger Means to the line where he made one of two shots.
With just under a second remaining in the overtime period, trailing by three points, Indian Voss (10) provided the special delivery of a three pointer to knot the game 50-50, thus forcing a second overtime period.
JV Overtime Period One, Milan 50-50 ND
Indians Ethan Voss, Joey Davis, Zack Lewis and Nick Ryan hit the floor with eagerness and desire, but quickly found their four man rotation unable to hold off the full Charger team for another three minute overtime period.
Charger scoring during the second overtime period came from a Badgley FG and FT, a Hammersmith FG and FT and a pair of FT's by Means for a total of 58 points, while Indian Lewis (12) managed to score one of two awarded FT's for the tribe, ending the game at Milan 51-58 North Deatur.

vs ND Chargers
The Milan Indian boys varsity team fell short in their Saturday November 28, game played against the Chargers at NDHS by a final count of ND 78-55.
Varsity Quarter One, Milan 13-13 ND
A Sean Laub (30) trey gave Milan their first lead in the game at 10-9 at the 2:30 mark of the first quarter. Indian Alex Walter (32) tied the game at 11 with his FG followed by teammate Michael Brandes (52) sinking of a FG to again put the Indians up two at 13-11. ND scored to end first quarter action in a tie at 13 apiece.
Varsity Quarter Two, Milan 28-44 ND
With the second period's opening, the Indians took a three point edge off a Ethan Voss (12) bomb from downtown. A Brandon Withers (24) trey kept the tribe close at 19-20, but the Chargers mounted a huge arsenal through the rest of the period to lead the Indians 44-28 at the halftime break.
Varsity Quarter Three, Milan 40-55 ND
The Indians drew to within 12 points during the third period of play at 40-52, but found ND adding three more to end the period down 15 points, trailing 40-55.
Varsity Quarter Four, Milan 55-78 ND
As the fourth quarter played out, the tribe would not find the answer to cut into the Charger momentum, falling by the final score of 55-78.

The Milan Indian boys JV and varsity teams will host the Lawrenceburg Tigers on Saturday night, December 5, with JV action scheduled to get underway at 6pm.
