legion members send supplies to Iraq

Students attending the Vocational and Technical
School in Balad, Iraq, will be able to continue with their studies
thanks to the efforts of Second Lt. Amanda Thompson and the 732nd
Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron Facility Engineer Team 2 (FET
2) as well as the American Legion Post #173 of Versailles.
The school, built in 1943, is the only school in Balad where students
could learn trade skills such as carpentry, electrical, and automotive
as well as computer skills. It was in need of repairs due to deterioration
as well as bombing and insurgent activities.
FET 2 team designed a full facility upgrade that included new roofs,
replacement of doors and windows and cosmetic improvements to the
interior and exterior walls as well as electrical upgrades.
In an effort to support one of their members’ projects, the
American Legion Post #173 of Versailles, along with the Sons of
the Legion, sent three care packages of school supplies
to be distributed to the students of the school in Iraq.
Lt. Thompson is an Air Force civil engineer stationed at Luke Air
Force Base in Phoenix. She is the daughter of Lee and Marla Thompson
of Holton.
