SR
Raider Brian Thomas signs
Letter of Intent with ONU Polar Bears
Gary Franklin, Sports Writer
On Tuesday evening, January 19, South Ripley Raider senior
Brian Thomas signed a Letter of Intent to play baseball for
the ONU (Ohio Northern University) Polar Bears.
Following SRHS graduation, Thomas will make his home on the
campus of ONU, located in Ada, Ohio, where he will trade his
SRHS green for ONU orange.
Thomas has been accepted to the Raabe College of Pharmacy
at ONU. The College of Pharmacy has been in existance since
1884. Acceptance into the program is very competitive and
he was one of 165 students offered admission after an interview
of approximately 350 students with over 800 applications.
Having played organized travel baseball from the age of eight,
Thomas will further his baseball adventures at the college
level with ONU. ONU is part of the Ohio Athletic Conference
and a NCAA Division III program.
As an ONU Polar Bear, Thomas will play under Head Coach Justin
Bergman and assistant Jeff Mercer. The Polar Bear's season
consists of 35-40 games with an annual spring break trip to
Florida.
In past seasons ONU has won 7 OAC championships, made 8 NCAA
tournament appearances, developed 7 All-Americans and has
a 0.546 all time winning percentage between 1903-2009.
Thomas noted that he had amassed many accomplishments in his
four years of SRHS varsity baseball action under former Raider
Coach Rod Hite and current Raider Coach Greg Hughes.
Thomas made both All-Conference and All-Sectional team and
earned "Outstanding Pitcher" honors last year. He
also was a member of the 2008 South Ripley Raider Final Four
baseball team.
He noted that much of his baseball abilities were learned
from his parents and through years of playing baseball under
Coach Doug Burcham as a part of the Versailles Radio Shack/Indiana
Bats. More recently Thomas traveled with teams from Cincinnati
and last summer he played for the Madison Legion team coached
by Steve Houchen.
Congratulations and best wishes to Brian Thomas on his acceptance
and future endeavors!
