James E. Boyd, Jr.
James E. Boyd, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend of many died peacefully on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 100 years old at the Waters in Batesville. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by family. He will be remembered for his love of family and friends.
He had a passion for all sports, especially baseball, and had a long history in the sport starting in his childhood, pitching batting practice with the Reds, and a “dream” to throw out a first pitch for the Reds through "Never Too Late" after his 100th birthday.
He will be missed by his three children: James E. Boyd, III, of Indianapolis; Charles “Andy” Boyd, of Oxford, Mississippi; and Joyce “Cis” Call of Milan. Mr. Boyd had 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Joyce Boyd; and his brother, Robert “Bob” Jackson Boyd.
He was born on February 9, 1910, the son of James E. Boyd, Sr. and Gertrude Zimmer in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a child, he played for several Coca-Cola® teams in Cincinnati where he became a star pitcher. He graduated from Withrow High School in Hyde Park in 1928 and attended Miami University.
While at Miami University, he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and played both baseball and track at the collegiate level. On the Miami baseball team, Jim became a lifelong friend of future Big Leaguer Walter “Smokey” Alston.
During his college summers, Jim played on a summer team coached by Walter’s dad and played against the House of David team, when Satchel Paige was barnstorming with them. The legendary pitcher Paige (as Jim recalls played first base most of the day) gave some great advice to young Boyd: “never throw to first base when you’re on the mound.”
During a couple of those college-year summers, Jim Boyd was noticed by someone in the Reds organization and was invited to pitch during batting practice at the Reds’ home games. Jim was a good enough pitcher to draw the ire of shortstop Leo Durocher when he threw a curve ball the player couldn’t hit, which resulted in a bat being thrown at the young hurler by the fiery infielder! Mr. Boyd also became lifelong friends with Ival Goodman, who was the Right Fielder for the Reds at the time.
Jim was married in 1936 to Joyce Leasure Miller. In 1945, the couple moved to Milan where they raised their three children and established the Milan Locker Plant. Jim both played himself and coached his sons’ teams throughout his adult life. He coached for the Knothole Team, the forerunner to today’s Little League, and also the Jr. American Legion Baseball teams. Jim was 46 years old when he pitched his last game.
In the late 1960’s and 70’s, while Smokey Alston was Manager of the LA Dodgers, Jim would call his friend Smokey when the Dodgers were in Cincinnati. The family would get tickets to the game, attend early to watch batting and in field practice, and sit in the dugout and watch the game.
Jim later worked for Hillenbrand Industries in Sales and Marketing retiring in 1976. In his retirement, he worked for Hoosier Links Golf Course in Milan. He actively played golf until he was 95 years old.
At Jim’s 100th birthday party in February, he was honored by the Reds team, the Bengals team, Miami University, letters from the State Congressman and State Representatives, and a Letter from the President of the United States. Family and friends from around the country traveled to Milan to take part in the celebration.
After Jim turned 100 years old, his daughter “Cis” asked him if there was anything still left on his “bucket list” that he wished he could have done, and he answered, “I always wanted to pitch in a Reds major league game.” Through "Never Too Late", a last wish was “pitched” to the Reds team. Mr. Boyd started physical therapy to get his pitching arm in shape; however he was unable to make it on the mound in time before he was called Home.
In keeping with his wishes, his body is being donated to the University of Cincinnati Medical School for research. The memorial service celebrating his life will be held at Milan United Methodist Church on Wednesday, July 14, 2010. Open house will start at 4:00 pm, with a service at 5:30 PM and dinner immediately following. Services will be officiated by Reverend Britt. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Milan Youth Baseball Organization. Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home is serving the family.
