A Cross Plains man was struck by a semi tractor-trailer, then his vehicle was struck by a pickup truck as he was spun into the opposite lane of traffic causing him to be partially ejected from his vehicle.

Police responded to a 911 call Tuesday, September 7 around 3:42 p.m.

Deputy Andrew Hammack reported that a red 2000 Oldsmobile Alero, driven by a 17-year-old female from Holton, was at the intersection of Old Michigan Road and US 421 near Rexville, waiting to turn onto Old Michigan Road. She was northbound on US 421.
While the Alero was waiting for oncoming traffic from the southbound direction before turning, a 2003 Peterbilt tractor-trailer operated by Saul Arellano, 50, of East Chicago, failed to stop in time and hit the blue 1999 Chevrolet S-10 operated by Jonathan Demaree, 48, of Cross Plains, who was stopped behind the Alero.

Demaree’s vehicle then crossed into the coming traffic, and was struck by a white 1992 Chevrolet Silverado, operated by Larry G. Haggard Jr., 27, of Madison, who was southbound on US 421.

Demaree was partially ejected from his vehicle and was flown by Dove Flight to University of Cincinnati Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. According to police, no one else was injured in the accident.

The accident is under investigation by the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office who was assisted at the scene by Rescue 69, Ripley County Medics, New Marion Fire, and the Indiana State Police.
