As the weather remains summer-like with temperatures in the upper ‘80’s, it’s hard to think about Christmas. However, that’s exactly what a local group has on their minds according to Shanna Joseph, who is heading up the Ripley County Angels of Giving for another year.

The economy could have left hundreds of families without food and presents for their children last year at Christmastime if it had not been for the generous giving of businesses, organizations, and individuals in Ripley County.

“Your contribution to this heartwarming and worthwhile cause would be greatly appreciated, especially by a smiling child whom you may never know,” Joseph wrote in a letter asking citizens of the county to give.

Joseph told the Osgood Journal she never really stops getting ready for the next year, once the presents have been distributed. “I always start thinking of the next year,” she noted.

Last year a building at the Ripley County Fairgrounds Park was full of bundles of presents and needed items for Ripley County families. “We were so pleased to be able to help out our senior citizens,” Joseph noted. Food, gift certificates, and needed clothing was given to hundreds of needy families.

This year is no different. Many people are still unemployed and the need is great. You can help in a variety of ways. Gifts are needed, money is always appreciated, and volunteers are very welcome. You can adopt a family and purchase gifts. You can wrap them or not, and bring them to the Ripley County Purdue Extension Office at the Fairgrounds Park in Osgood.

Any monetary donation can be mailed to Bill Warren, 645 North Columbia, Osgood, IN 47037. Checks may be made to Warren with “gifts” noted at the bottom of the check. Checks need to be received by December 5 so there is time for the “angels” to do their work.

Those needing assistance can pick up an application form at Family Connections in Versailles or the Extension Office in Osgood. Applications are due by November 19. Those who will get their requests granted will receive a letter and be able to pick up their “goodies” on December 13 and 14.

Joseph knows the need is great again this year, but is confident the people of Ripley County will rally as they have in years past. “It’s just great to be a part of something so joyful,” she concluded. Volunteers interested in helping can contact Bill Warren at 689-4427. Warren has been involved in the program for a number of years in Ripley County. He now serves on the County Council where he donates his salary to the Ripley County Food Bank. Warren knows the joy of seeing children’s eyes light up at the holidays and serves the community in many ways.
