The Southeastern Career Center Board of Managers discussed the 2011-2012 school calendar at the regular meeting held Wednesday, October 15. According to SCC Director Brad Street, the SCC calendar needs to correspond with each school if possible in order to maximize study time and reduce the number of days where only one or two schools attend.

During the discussion the board learned about a balanced calendar where a school will have three semesters with a two-week break in between. Southwestern School Corporation has plans to institute the balanced calendar for next year with several other schools discussing the option.

According to research made by the Southwestern calendar committee, students will continue to attend 180 days and will receive two months break in the summer. It was noted that a balanced calendar improves test scores as well as student and teacher attendance.

In other business, the board approved the teacher contracts, status quo, for 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years. School policies approved include the drug free workplace policy and the policy regarding guns and ammunition on school property.

The recommendation to hire Nancy Narwold as co-op coordinator was unanimously approved with JCD Superintendent Bill Narwold abstaining from voting on the matter. This position is funded by a Perkins grant, according to Street.

The next meeting will be on November 10 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Southeastern Career Center in Versailles.
