A dream in the making for ten years for IHSAA Class 1A Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagle Coach Scott Smith in his seventh trip leading his team to regional action, extends to Semi State competition following JCD's Regional #15 Championship victory.
On Saturday, Feb. 19, at Southwestern Shelby HS, the Lady Eagles defeated the Clay City Eels, 41-33 in regional championship contest.
One year ago the Lady Eagles defeated the Clay City Eels by one point to advance from the morning round to the championship contest where they fell short. Not the case for Smith's Lady Eagles of 2010-11.
Everyone knows the early (Eagle) bird gets the worm (Eel)!!

When asked about the regional championship win, Coach Smith replied; "I had a seven girl rotation working in the second half and I was not going to vary from that for the remainder of the game as they were getting the job done for us both offensively and defensively.
Excellent defensive efforts were given by seniors Brooke Gilland and Hailee Sizemore in containing usually high scoring Lady Eels. Even though we were trailing by seven at the halftime break, 13-20, our third period offense led by seniors Becca Wagner and Ashley Hammond found the needed helping hot shooting hand of junior Meagan Hughes to not only catch but hold the Clay City Lady Eels scoreless in the third period, while gaining a four point edge to capture the championship in the fourth by the final score of 42-31.
The seven girls, Becca Wagner, Ashley Hammond, Meagan Hughes, Hailee Sizemore and Brooke Gilland, including Emily Huntington and Amber Crank's efforts off the bench were just what the Lady Eagles needed to seal the deal.
Nice time for Hughes to get her scoring hand back, by the way, he added jokingly."
(Although we would rather that they were playing for the championship in Class 2A Regional Saturday night, it was great to see South Ripley Lady Raider Coach Brian Samples and many of his Lady Raiders at the Class 1A championship in support of fellow Coach Smith and the Lady Eagle team). The Lady Raiders advanced to the IHSAA Class 2A Regional played at Lawrence Central HS where they faced the Indian Creek Lady Braves in the 10 a.m game. Unfortunately, the Lady Raider extended season was ended as they were defeated by IC.
