Troopers save possible heart attack victim

On Saturday evening, December 17 just before 9:00 p.m. Trooper Kyle Stovall came upon a vehicle he thought had been involved in a crash on US 50 just west of SR 48 in Lawrenceburg.

Shortly thereafter Troopers Cameron McCreary, Brian Earls and Brent Miller, along with off-duty Lawrenceburg EMT, Casey Nanz, arrived on the scene.

The vehicle had not crashed, but there was a male driver slumped in the vehicle and the doors were locked.

Trooper Stovall broke out a window and unlocked the door. Trooper McCreary checked the driver and found he had no pulse and was not breathing.

Trooper McCreary and EMT Nanz removed the driver while Trooper Earls retrieved an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) from Trooper McCreary's car. During this time Trooper Nanz was performing CPR on the victim.

The AED was applied and two shocks were delivered just prior to the arrival of Lawrenceburg EMS units.

Upon their arrival, they applied the AED from the ambulance and administered three more shocks.

At this time the victim, Darrell Waller, 71, of Sunman, regained his pulse and began breathing on his own.

He was transported to Dearborn County Hospital by Lawrenceburg EMS and later transferred to University Hospital in Cincinnati where he was listed in critical but stable condition.
