According to information from Versailles Fire Chief Ben Sieverding, the department was dispatched to a small fire at 1805 South U.S. 421 at the State Highway Garage about 7:02 a.m. Monday morning, February 20. The Versailles Fire Department responded with two engines to the building that was showing a lot of smoke. Sieverding said upon arrival, state highway employees informed the firefighters that they discharged a fire extinguisher on the fire, but it was not out.
The firemen entered the building and extinguished the remaining fire and overhauled the area. The fire started on a rack holding light bulbs for traffic lights, according to Sieverding. He said it was contained to the shelving area and combustibles around the shelves. The Osgood Volunteer Fire Department was put on stand-by in case firefighters required assistance. Sieverding said the cause is still under investigation, but it appeared to be related to an extension cord that was plugged into a piece of equipment outdoors.
