Barbara S. Ludwig

Barbara S. Ludwig, 77, of Batesville, died Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Margaret Mary Health. She was born October 22, 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Elizabeth (nee: Wilhelm) and Henry Gausman. She married Orville Ludwig on November 26, 1956 in Cincinnati and he preceded her in death on October 18, 1974.

Mrs. Ludwig was a teacher for the Cincinnati Public Schools for eleven years and later a substitute teacher at St. Nicholas near Sunman. Education was not only an important part of her life, but a lifelong commitment as well. Barb never stopped learning. She had been taking courses from St. Mary of the Woods College in Terre Haute for quite some time that helped promote critical thinking and leadership qualities which fit well with who she was. Barb was always willing to listen, offer advice, nurture and mentor. Family, friend or total stranger, she was willing to help. She would talk with you to figure out the problem, figure out how to solve it and then it was up to you to do it.

An avid writer and reader, Barb penned countless short stories and journal entries about farm life and according to her family, there aren’t many books left at the Batesville Library she hasn’t read. A natural organizer, Barb kept everyone focused and the farm activities always moving in the right direction. Although not a big television fan, she would watch real life dramas such as Judge Judy or some of the detective series. She loved working crossword puzzles and while she liked a wide variety of foods, the family teased that her cooking skills had room for improvement.

She is survived by her sons, Larry Ludwig of Batesville, Lou Ludwig of Grandville, Ohio; brother, Gerald Gausman of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, August 13, 10 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church in Morris with Rev. Pascal Nduka officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in the Bevis Cedar Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.
The family requests memorials be given to the Batesville Food Pantry. Weigel Funeral Home, Batesville was entrusted with the arrangements.
