JCD building project moves ahead

The Jac-Cen-Del Schools building project is continuing to move forward with the formation of the Building Corporation which was approved at the regular JCD board meeting on Wednesday, June 16.

According to the architect, the project is ready to go out to bid with a pre-bid meeting scheduled for June 29 and bid openings scheduled for July 13 at 2 p.m.

OPL Milan branch has grand opening

It’s been a labor of love for future generations,” said Osgood Public Library Board President Gene Pitts at the grand opening of the Osgood Public Library Milan Branch on Sunday, June 27. The newly constructed library was built on land donated by former Milan school teacher Mabel Lamb and was the vision of a few who realized the need for a library in Milan.

Harness racing makes a comeback

Just a few days before the Ripley County 4-H Fair has its official opening, harness racing will take place on the renovated original track at the grandstand. July 14 at 11 a.m. will be the first race, with another event planned for September 6 also at 11:00 a.m. The last time harness racing took place in Osgood was in 1955, according to one historian.

Reviving the sport from the past has created a flurry of excitement at the Ripley County Fairgrounds Park in Osgood. There has been a lot of movement with the original track, which is situated on the outskirts of the race track where motor vehicles now run, being completely restored. This was made possible through a $20,665.24 grant from the Indiana Standardbred Association, Greenfield.

Parking problem for Tyson Memorial Sports Complex resolved

Parking for the Tyson Memorial Sports Complex was discussed at the Versailles Town Council regular meeting on Thursday, June 10. According to park board member Don Tankersley, there has been additional parking areas completed providing ample parking for the complex. Tankersley apologized to the neighboring homeowners for the parking problems over the past few weeks since the sports complex opened.

This Saturday, June 26 will mark the 17th year for the Annual Ripley County Chamber of Commerce to sponsor their 5K Run/Walk.

The event will kick off a day of activities at 8:00 a.m. on the square in Versailles. Registration for the event will be $10 if postmarked by June 25. This includes a T-shirt. The day of the race the cost will be $15.00. You can register on race day from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. in front of the Ripley County Chamber of Commerce office on the east side of the square in Versailles.

This weekend the Ripley County Fairgrounds Park will be alive with the sounds of power ranging from lawn mowers to antique tractors with the featured tractors being Ford, Fordson, Ferguson and The Massey Family of Tractors - Massey Harris and Massey Ferguson. Maytag engines and collectibles will also be featured.

Osgood resident upset with police work

An Osgood resident and business owner expressed his displeasure with the Osgood Police Department regarding a recent theft at his business at the regular Osgood Town Council meeting on Tuesday, June 15.

Keith Bobb, owner of Stuff For Sale, explained that his business was broken into sometime during the weekend of June 12. According to Bobb, several hundred dollars was stolen from the cash drawers.

Ladies vye for Miss Ripley County title

Nine young ladies attended the Queen’s Tea last Friday evening as each is vying for the Miss Ripley County title for 2010.

The ladies met at the Versailles Baptist Church where they heard instruction about the upcoming pageant that will be held at the Damm Theatre in Osgood on July 11 to determine the winners. The queen and her court will reign over the Ripley County 4-H Fair, which is slated to begin July 17.

County commissioners give solution to drainage problem

The Land vs. Richmond drainage board hearing was held at the regular commissioners' meeting on Monday, June 14. The drainage issue was first presented to the commissioners at the November 2009 meeting.

According to Donna Land of Milan, property owned by her and her mother, Margaret, had standing water issues due to an obstructed ditch on land owned by Mike and Cindy Richmond. According to Land, this was caused by the construction of a building on the Richmond property that left a mound of dirt near a fence on the Land property resulting in the additional water runoff.

Milan woman charged with battery following wheelchair incident

Police responded to a domestic disturbance at 777 Golfview Drive in Milan last Monday just after midnight.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed June 8 in Ripley County Superior Court, Sherry Baston was charged with Battery Resulting in Bodily Injury as a result of an incident at the above mentioned Milan residence.

Relay For Life set for weekend

The ongoing battle against cancer is one Ripley County residents are determined to fight until a cure is found.

Their determination can be measured by the turnout this weekend, June 19-20, at the Relay For Life event at the Batesville High School Track where 32 teams have already signed on to raise money for research to cure cancer.

Versailles VFD to have open house

The public is invited to an open house at the new Versailles fire station on Saturday, June 19 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The new facility is located at 1869 S. Industrial Park Road, Versailles (south on US 421).

Napoleon Town Council looks into complaint about fliers

At the regular meeting of the Napoleon Town Council held Wednesday, June 9 the dilemma of Kroger fliers in resident’s yards was discussed.

It was noted that these fliers have been strewn on lawns and people are not happy about it. The council will look into the situation with Attorney Larry Eaton saying throwing the fliers out was littering.

Ripley Crossing to expand

A groundbreaking ceremony was held for The Seasons at Ripley Crossing, a 20-unit addition to the health care services facility located in Milan.

The ceremony took place Tuesday, June 8 at 1:00 p.m. with representatives from Ripley Crossing, Maxwell Construction Company (the firm hired to manage construction for the new building), community leaders including Milan Town Board members and Ripley County Commissioners, Robert Reiners and Gary Stutler in attendance.

A group from Ripley County are feeding the hungry in more ways than one, according to Jim Bode who founded Isaiah 58:7 Ministries.

The group goes to the inner city of Cincinnati to serve meals and witness to those in need in a variety of ways.

Bode explained that he felt the call of God on him to begin this ministry for quite some time. He said he would attend events such as Bengals and Reds games and look out and see needy people. He felt God was telling him to do something - to minister to them. He said in December of last year after a church service on a Sunday night, he yielded to the call, and the first trip to Cincinnati was launched December 18, 2009.

Superintendent retires after 36 years of service

Retiring South Ripley Superintendent Ted Ahaus lived his life’s dream of being a school teacher and coach. He even realized the education process at a higher level and served as principal and finally superintendent, all at South Ripley School Corporation.
Ahaus worked his last day on Tuesday of this week closing a fulfilling chapter in his life.

Baston could receive up to 50 years in prison
Jury returns guilty verdict

It only took a jury about two hours to come back with a guilty verdict in the case against Robert Baston, 41, of Milan.

The formal charge of Child Molesting, a Class A Felony, had been charged by Ripley County Prosecutor Ric Hertel.

The story unfolded a summer party on August 16 of last year at the home of Sondra Strezeski, mother of the defendant, where a six year old girl who had been visiting with her father from Newport, KY, claimed she had been sexually assaulted by the defendant.

Recycling expanded in Ripley County


The Southeastern Indiana Solid Waste District has announced more opportunities for residents of Ripley County to recycle items known as household hazardous waste. In the past, these items could only be recycled at the SISWD Processing Center in Madison.

Residents are now urged to take their ‘difficult-to-dispose of’ items to the Ripley County Recycling Center located south of Osgood on US 421 on the second Saturday of each quarter - for 2010, the dates will be July 10 and October 9. A special collection vehicle will be located at the site from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on those Saturdays. These items can be accepted only during that hour to ensure that a certified professional is present.

Jury trial begins for man charged with child molesting

There are two sides to every story and so far jurors have heard a little of both sides concerning charges against Robert Baston, 41, of Milan.

Baston has been charged with a Class A Felony, Child Molesting, which means he is alleged to have had sexual intercourse or deviate sexual conduct with a child under the age of 14.

Courthouse annex plans discussed

Plans for a new courthouse annex continue according to Julie Berry, Midwestern Engineering, who presented possible granting opportunities as well as a request for a space study at the regular commissioners meeting held on Friday, May 28. According to Berry, the space study will be required in order to be considered for future grants for the annex.

A representative from ATC was also at the meeting regarding the annex. He requested that a title search be completed to ensure there are no environmental liens or restrictions on the property.

Veterans Expo set for Saturday

He along with veterans service officers from Ripley and Dearborn counties will be on hand to answer questions regarding veterans' benefits at the 1st Annual Military and Veterans Expo on Saturday, June 5 at the Milan VFW Post 6234.

Sunman Council okays proposed 5K run

Members of the Sunman Town Council were in agreement about a proposal for an event that could potentially bring hundreds of runners to their town.

Rita Seig, with Southeastern Indiana Voices For Children, explained she wanted the town’s approval before making any further plans for the event that would bring awareness to the need for volunteers for the CASA (Court Appointed Self Advocate) program.

Scholarships announced at SCC meeting

Several Southeastern Career Center students received scholarships announced Director Brad Street at the regular board of directors meeting on Wednesday, May 12.

Students receiving the Southeastern Indiana REMC scholarships include Tyler Powers, Jac-Cen-Del High School, building trades; Laura Kaufhold, Milan High School, business; and Michael Wray, Jennings County High School, electrical trades.

Larger sign approved for FSB

Linda Hardebeck, Green Sign Company, presented an application from the Versailles branch of the Friendship State Bank, for a variance from the maximum sign size at the regular meeting of the Board of Zoning Appeals on Tuesday, May 25. The current requirement for signs is 35 square feet.
