Geneen Ostendorf appeared before the Ripley County Commissioners to repeat her request for the commissioners to consider employing an Animal Control Officer at the regular meeting on Monday, March 22. Ostendorf had previously appeared at the February 8 meeting making a similar request as well as pointing out the need for rabies prevention education and requesting information on the duties of the county dog warden.

Mehrle named superintendent for SR

Dr. John Mehrle was selected to serve as Superintendent for the South Ripley Community School Corporation, which will be effective July 1.

The unanimous vote was given by the school board of trustees at their regular meeting Monday, March 15.

Some neglected horses rescued - others not so lucky

Because of the compassion felt for helpless animals, several horses were rescued after two Napoleon sisters contacted the Ripley County Sheriff’s Department as well as animal rights organizations People Assisting Animals in Need (PAAIN) and the Indiana Horse Rescue on Wednesday, March 17.

Holton water rates to increase

The Osgood Town Council considered a Water Purchase Resolution at the regular meeting on Tuesday, March 16. According to town attorney Mary Ann Gay, the resolution will increase the rate for the Holton Rural Water Company two percent or the consumer price index.

Holton may not have a Jamboree

The Holton Town Board held their March meeting with members Paul Hughes, Ryan Lauber, Angie Farrell and Beth Cooper attending. Topics of discussion included the possibility that this year, for the first time in many years, there may not be a Jamboree, according to town resident, Wilma Myers. She cited her reason as being “due to a lack of help.”mbers of both parties, but my constituents can count on me to keep up that fight.”

Council asked to support possible business coming to Versailles

Barry Lauber, representing the Ripley County Redevelopment Commission, came before the Ripley County Council Monday, March 15 to request their support for a new business interested in locating in the Versailles Industrial Park just south of town on US 421.

The new business would be a definite boost to the area bringing about 75 jobs. Lauber said the jobs would pay $18.00 per hour and up. He said the company will need from seven to 10 acres to accommodate their business operations.

 
B'ville man stabbed, relative arrested

According to information from Batesville Police Chief Stan Holt, a stabbing is being investigated that occurred Sunday night, March 14.

Chief Holt said officers responded to a call to the dispatch center that came from the Margaret Mary Hospital’s emergency room about 8:00 p.m. reporting a 20-year-old man came in with a stab wound.

Humane Society needs your help

Wrapping up the second phase of a building project at the Ripley County Humane Society is a goal met thanks to the Rising Sun Regional Foundation, according to DeDee Holliday, president of the board of directors at the local animal shelter.

“We are so blessed to have this grant,” Holliday told the Osgood Journal.

Task Unit continues to help even as it ends

It was the end of an era when Task Unit 1 in Osgood closed its doors the first of this year. Task Unit 1 began nearly 30 years ago serving families in Jackson, Center, and Delaware townships as well as parts of Milan and Versailles in the beginning.

“It was an outstanding service organization,” said Shawn Negangard, who has served as both an active member of the extrication unit and a member of the board for the past 25 years.

Bob Bischoff seeks reelection
in District 68

Bob Bischoff announced he has filed his paperwork to seek re-election as 68th District Representative in the Indiana House.

“I’m so proud to represent my friends and neighbors in the Indiana House of Representatives in Indianapolis,” Bischoff said. “My priority going forward this session, and if my constituents give me another opportunity to represent them, will be on jobs and protecting the local riverboat revenue dollars our community has. Those funds are so important for local job creation, infrastructure improvements and educational opportunities. I’ve had to fight to keep those dollars in our community, with members of both parties, but my constituents can count on me to keep up that fight.”

Commissioners hear noise concerns

Ripley County residents Tim and Mary Waller discussed a situation regarding excessive noise as well as animals and animal waste issues at their home on CR 450S at the regular commissioner meeting on Monday, March 8. According to the Wallers, although they are on good terms with their neighbors, they would like these issues resolved.

Milan property owner questions bond amount

Milan property owner Dr. Tim Alward requested the town council consider reducing the performance bond required by the town at the regular meeting held on Monday, March 8. Dr. Alward owns property on Carr Street next to the town hall.

6 taken into custody during cocaine bust

The cooperative effort of police agencies resulted in a large quantity of cocaine being prevented from hitting the streets and sent six people to jail.

According to information from Deputy Abraham Hildebrand of the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, the arrests were made Friday night, March 5 after his office, along with the Batesville Police Department executed a search warrant at a Batesville residence. Working with the prosecutor’s office, police were able to secure the warrant through the Ripley Superior Court.

Fernbach now declared competent to stand trial for alleged shooting

In a surprising turn of events, a Ripley County man has been declared competent in less than five months from the initial findings that he was not competent to stand trial for allegedly shooting two people in Batesville.

James L. Fernbach Jr., 32, of Batesville, was charged with Attempted Murder after he allegedly shot Phillip Cruiser, 56, of Westport and Benjamin Dick, 26, of Batesville, outside a Batesville convenience store on April 4, 2009, with no motive given.

From one family to another...a little help is needed

An organization that has faithfully helped families for more than 30 years is facing severe cuts to the budget that will impact the six county area that it serves. Family Connections, 202 Gaslight Drive in Versailles, has already seen about a 25% cut to their budget and is expecting additional cuts that will result in a reduction in staff and therefore a reduction in services.

Helping Haitians is nothing new for Versailles woman

Helping children living in poverty in Haiti is in Aimee Cornett’s blood. She has been following in her father’s footsteps since her first trip in the summer of 1998 to the Children Training and Nutrition Center in Gonaives. Her father, Harry Lyness, Bright, has been going on mission trips to Haiti since 1980.

Water system to be improved with $778,000 grant
Stimulus money gives Osgood a boost

A grant in the amount of $778,000 has been awarded to the Town of Osgood, according to information from Congressman Baron Hill’s office.

The Congressman was pleased that Osgood was selected for the sizeable grant and also a loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which was administered by the agency’s Rural Development Water and Environmental Program. The loan was in the amount of $2,370,000.

Merge could save schools money and protect education for students

Patrons of the Milan Community School Corporation learned in a special called meeting of the Milan School Board on February 18 that a cut of about $400,000 or more will be needed in order for the schools to continue to operate in the black. This same presentation was given earlier at the January board meeting as well as to the staff at all three schools, according to Interim Superintendent Steve Gookins.

Local soldier realizes dream of flight school

After serving nearly a year in Iraq, Spc. Brandon Gardner was about to settle into college life at Indiana State University, when duty called again.

A phone call and a letter to confirm he had been chosen for Warrant Officer Candidate and Flight School, was just what Gardner had wanted all along, because this will lead him to his ultimate goal - flying aircraft for the military.
