Candidates talk about issues

Just days before the election on November 2 candidates gathered to give the voters the opportunity to hear the issues at a town hall type meeting at the South Ripley Elementary School on Monday, October 25. The event was sponsored by the Ripley County Chamber of Commerce.

Candidates for both the local and state offices were in attendance to answer questions presented randomly posed by moderator Cathy May and from those in the audience.
First up was Trent Decker representing District 9 US Representative Baron Hill who was unable to attend. Decker presented some issues important to Congressman Hill such as creating jobs for Indiana, ensuring the success of small businesses and fiscal discipline such as a balanced budget.

30-year ISP veteran to serve school patrons
Dan Goris accepts position for South Ripley School Corp.

The South Ripley School Corporation has announced that Dan Goris has accepted the position of transportation supervisor.

Goris is well known in the community for his service in various capacities for the Indiana State Police, Versailles District where he is currently in a supervisory position for the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division.

County council adopts 2011 budget

Recently the long hours of budget hearings came to an end with the Ripley County Council finalizing the adoption of the 2011 budget with a vote of four to two, with William Warren and Juanita Kaiser voting against the budget as submitted. The total county budget presented was $14,495,787.00. This meeting was held October 20, after recessing from Monday’s regular meeting on October 18.

Patrons of Milan schools must have questions approved by superintendent

Patrons with questions for the Milan School Board will now have to request to be put on the agenda. The procedure was explained at the regular board meeting on Monday, October 18.

JCD schools meet AYP standards

Efforts to improve education for their students are paying off at Jac-Cen-Del schools. The elementary school met their Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) and is no longer a school on watch Superintendent Bill Narwold reported at the regular school board meeting on Wednesday, October 19. Narwold also reported that the entire corporation met AYP as well.

South Ripley teacher suspended; police look into allegations

A South Ripley High School teacher is being investigated by the Indiana State Police for alleged misconduct with a female student at the school.

Det. Vance Patton confirmed that emails have been turned over to police for investigation that involve inappropriate content from the teacher, Ed Newman, to a female student.

Republicans rally at Friendship

Members of the Ripley County Republican party gathered on Saturday, October 16 just 17 days before the November election for a final rally for support of the local candidates.

County Chairperson Ginger Bradford introduced past chair Kenny Copeland who reminded everyone to vote. “Our vote counts,” he told the crowd.


Versailles police look into burglary, vandalism at career center

The Southeastern Career Center was burglarized and vandalized sometime between the hours of 11 p.m. Monday, October 18 and 4 a.m. Tuesday, October 19, according to Versailles Town Marshal Joe Mann.

Marshal Mann received a call about 5 a.m. Tuesday morning from the Ripley County Sheriff’s Department, who had arrived first on the scene at the school. While Mann wasn’t on duty at that time, he responded along with his deputy marshal Lee Mathews. “We knew we needed to get in and out of there because school would be starting soon,” Mann told The Versailles Republican.

Milan lady honored for saving her neighbor's life

Residents of the Lamplight Villa in Milan are grateful for the fast actions of one unlikely hero during a fire on September 18 that broke out in one of the apartments.

“It happened so fast,” said Lorraine Watts. She had just gotten home when she heard the alarm. She said she went to check on her neighbor, Marlene Cook, when she saw the flames in the Cook apartment.

Trick or treat times given for local towns – more trick or treat information released

Trick or treat night in Friendship will be Saturday, October 30 from 5-7 p.m.

Also, the Milan High School Student Council will be collecting cans of non-perishable food for the Milan Food Pantry. All members will be clearly identified by a distinctive badge.

Balanced calendar discussed at SCC board meeting

The Southeastern Career Center Board of Managers discussed the 2011-2012 school calendar at the regular meeting held Wednesday, October 15. According to SCC Director Brad Street, the SCC calendar needs to correspond with each school if possible in order to maximize study time and reduce the number of days where only one or two schools attend.

During the discussion the board learned about a balanced calendar where a school will have three semesters with a two-week break in between. Southwestern School Corporation has plans to institute the balanced calendar for next year with several other schools discussing the option.

County highway workers receive safety award

The employees of the Ripley County Highway Garage have earned the Indiana Public Employers’ Plans safety award for 2009.

According to highway supervisor Junior Heaton, this means that the employees took steps to practice safety measures and had minimal accidents.

Jury finds jail officer not guilty

A jail officer at the Ripley County Jail found herself on the other side of the bars after she was charged with Trafficking With An Inmate, a Class A Misdemeanor. Jury trial for Crystal G. Miller, 31, of Osgood, was held in Ripley County Superior Court September 30 and October 1.

It didn’t take jurors long to decide that Miller was not guilty of the crime she was charged with.

Rep. Duncan receives Sagamore of the Wabash award from Gov. Daniels


Governor Mitch Daniels surprised Representative Cleo Duncan recently when he honored her with the Sagamore of the Wabash Award for her 16 years of service to the Indiana General Assembly.

“I scheduled a meeting with the governor to say farewell and to give thanks for everything he has done for me and for our state over the years,” said Rep. Duncan. “So, needless to say, I was genuinely surprised and much honored to receive such a prestigious award.”

Angels gearing up for Christmas

As the weather remains summer-like with temperatures in the upper ‘80’s, it’s hard to think about Christmas. However, that’s exactly what a local group has on their minds according to Shanna Joseph, who is heading up the Ripley County Angels of Giving for another year.

The economy could have left hundreds of families without food and presents for their children last year at Christmastime if it had not been for the generous giving of businesses, organizations, and individuals in Ripley County.

Trick or treat times given for local towns

Children are eagerly planning their costumes for Halloween and most importantly trick or treat night.

The Town of Holton has planned to hold trick or treat on Friday, October 29 from 6-8 p.m. Children in the town of Osgood can haunt the streets on Saturday, October 30 from 5-7 p.m.

RSRF grants continue to help residents

The Rising Sun Regional Foundation (RSRF) awarded a total of $260,000 in 11 new grants at its September meeting. These grants included:

• $10,000 to the Rising Sun and Ohio County Senior Citizen Housing, Inc. toward the purchase of a new server and related software for its central office.

County initiates burn ban

The Ripley County Commissioners issued a burn ban for all of Ripley County at the regular meeting on Monday, October 4. An exception was made for the Versailles State Park due to the lateness of the year and safety measures already in place.

Daugherty taken into custody less than a week after warrant is issued

An arrest warrant that was issued for Jason Q. Daugherty last week after he failed to show up for his final day of trial, was served in the early morning hours of October 6 at a residence in Jennings County.

Transportation director of South Ripley schools resigns

Democrats rally at B'ville

Ripley County Democrats met in record number at the Sherman House in Batesville Saturday evening for their annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner.

US Congressman Baron Hill was at the event, shaking hands, encouraging people to “stand firm.” Although he had already been through three parades that day, and had more events that same evening, the Congressman met with Ripley County constituents in his continuing manner of “getting back to the basics” and “talking with local people”.

Honeybees cause quite a buzz

What Milan homeowners Tony and Teresa Veldhaus discovered in their chimney this fall will benefit farmers and gardeners in the spring. Veldhaus discovered a colony of about 12,000 honeybees after seeing a few dead bees at the base of the chimney, the second colony to build a hive there in three years.

Knowing that honeybees are scarce, Veldhaus contacted local beekeeper Jim Orem to remove and relocate the colony. “Homeowners like the Veldhaus’ who would take the time to relocate a colony are few,” said Orem.

Verdicts reflect mixed bag for defendant who skipped last day of trial

After a jury heard testimony and saw evidence they came to the conclusion that a Ripley County man was not guilty on the charge of Manufacturing Methamphetamine, a Class B Felony; but that he was guilty of Conspiracy to Manufacture Methamphetamine, also a Class B Felony. They couldn’t all come to the same conclusion on the two other charges, Neglect of a Dependent and Possession of a Controlled Substance, both Class D Felonies, resulting in a hung jury.

Jason Daugherty, 33, of Versailles, was charged with the above crime in Ripley County Circuit Court, where his trial was held last week
