Pierceville post office patrons ask questions about possible closure

Kari Moore
Staff Writer

It was heard multiple times in a meeting held Thursday, August 24 at the Pierceville United Methodist Church that the Pierceville Post Office was “being reviewed” for a possible closure. Bob Redden, District Discontinuance Coordinator, answered patrons questions and explained what is going on.

The Pierceville branch is one of 3,700 post offices being reviewed. There is a set list of criteria that makes a post office eligible for review. In this case, Redden identified three criteria for review: office work load, insufficient customer demand and reasonable alternate service. The post office in Milan would be the closest post office if the Pierceville branch were to close.

Balanced calendar to be revisited at Milan schools

Wanda English Burnett
Editor

The balanced calendar issue is still on the table for Milan Community Schools.

At the regular meeting in July, Superintendent Dr. Thomas Reale noted that Lawrenceburg schools had approved a balanced calendar for the 2012-13 school year, bringing the total of area schools on board with the idea to six. He also told those in attendance that the Southeastern Career Center would now adopt a balanced calendar for the 2012-13 school year. The superintendent recommended the board consider adopting a calendar similar to those with the balanced calendars for the 2012-13 school year.

Do not sleep with your baby
Infant deaths are preventable

Wanda English Burnett
Editor

A baby dies each week and it can be prevented. “Please share this information with your readers,” Barbara Bowling, supervisor at the local department of child services in Versailles, told the Osgood Journal.

Bowling said that according to statistics from the Indiana Department of Child Services, a death a week occurs because someone is sleeping with a baby. It’s that simple. The tragedy can be prevented. Usually it’s a parent or sibling who share a bed, sofa or chair with an infant causing them to be accidentally suffocated. Some have died because a parent rolled on top of them and some infants were trapped by the bed frame, headboard, footboard, or between the bed and wall, furniture or some other object.

The items were removed from the basement area beneath the assessor’s office, and the problem was resolved.
